Here Alexandra Carter identifies the traditional marginalization of the working class female participants in ballet historiography, and moves on to reinstate the 'lost' period of the music hall ballet and to apply a critical account of that period. Carter examines the working conditions of the dancers, the identities and professional lives of the ballet girls and the ways in which the ballet of the music hall embodied the sexual psyche of the period, particularly in its representations of the ballet girl and the ballerina. By drawing on newspapers, journals, theatre programmes, contemporary fiction, poetry and autobiography, Carter firmly locates the period in its social, economic and artistic context. The book culminates in the argument that there are direct links between the music hall ballet and what has been termed the 'birth' of British ballet in the 1930s; a link so long ignored by dance historians. This work will appeal not only to those interested in nineteenth century studies, but also to those working in the fields of dance studies, gender studies, cultural studies and the performing arts.

Superb compliment to the Autobiography of Yogi

This is an inspiring read, essentially picking up where Paramhansa Yogananda's own autobiography left-off and continuing teachings from the early part of the twentieth century right up until today, at the dawn of the twenty first.

It updates considerably its predecessor, "The Path", revising the old text and bring us up to date.

The New Path (TNP) presents a fuller, more detailed picture of what knowing Yogananda personally was like and sets his world mission in its fullest, non sectarian context, not about forming this group or that, rather transforming man's connection with God - direct personal experience of the truth, not dogmatic or uncritical belief in mere written scripture or socially-oriented attendance at religious ceremonies.

TNP is much more complete than many existing first person accounts, such as "Treasures Against Time", "The Flawless Mirror", "Paramhansa Yoganda Trilogy" and "Collection of Four Kriya Yuga Gurus", given Swami Kriyananda's 60+ years of reflection on the essence of Yogananda's teachings.

Kriyananda is a direct disciple of Paramhansa Yogananda and under him, the head of the monastics, Vice President and Board Member of Self Realization Fellowship (SRF) and later founder of Ananda.

It would be a tragedy for any student to miss out on reading this great work, especially if that decision were based on one-sided knowledge of his split and later legal disputes both directly and later via proxies between SRF and Ananda.

The New Path-2009 edition

This is the best book available that describes the last few years of Paramhansa Yogananda's life. Every path attracts its quota of big egos, true believers, dogmatists, and holier than thou types and in Yogananda's wake there are certainly many of these. Kriyananda is willing to discuss all this and much more with an honesty that does him credit. He is able to lay aside his personal opinions and give an honest critique of events and personalities instead of seeing things only in a black and white perspective. This is one mans story of his search for truth, how he found Yogananda, and what his experiences with the Master were like. Again, he does not exaggerate and is willing to deal with sensitive issues honestly and fairly. I think he shows clearly that no one is either completely right or completely wrong and that we all see thru our own tinted spectacles. Overall, a great documentation of Yogananda's life and mission.

Emergence

I found "The Path" at a pavement bookseller in an obscure corner of Delhi, India, somewhere around 1990. Paramahamsa Yogananda was not so well known in India at that time, at least, not to my knowledge. A friend had presented me with a copy of "Autobiography of a Yogi" some years ago. I remember being intrigued by the title of the book, wondering if it had anything to do with the Paramahamsa. I bought the book to find out for myself.

Reading "The Path" was a source of great comfort to me. At the time, I was emerging from a particularly long period of what I call "The Dark Night of the Soul". Kriyananda's account of the anguish he underwent at the time of his expulsion from the organization to which he had given his life, touched me to the core. I recognized well, the sense of the futility of life, the feeling of being forsaken by both God and guru. Reading about his suffering helped me realize that I was not alone in the dungeon of Giant Despair; it also helped me find courage to face my own problems with greater acceptance and fortitude.

I mention this background because "The New Path" cannot avoid comparison with the older version of the same. Clearly, it is exceptionally well written, given Kriyananda's prolific output over the years. Most of those who have read "The Path" will find basically the same energy in "The New Path". but there is an added depth and dimension to the later work.

That dimension derives its wellspring from the persona of the Kriyananda of today. The Kriyananda that has been forged over the decades of financial struggle, over long drawn out lawsuits and other vicissitudes, too numerous to mention. The same events mentioned in "The Path" are presented in the same chronological order, but this time they are being experienced by the new Kriyananda of today, the one who can stand aside and observe himself playing his part in the game of Life. This new Kriyananda can see his boyhood from another angle, put in perspective, his stint as a questioning young man hungry for real answers and his blossoming as a devoted disciple to his enlightened guru. It is this perspective that he brings to "The New Path".

Inevitably "The New Path" contains additional material on his friends and family that have a bearing on the formation of the Kriynanda of today. The account of his sojourn with the Paramahamsa is especially worth reading, when seen in the light of Kriyananda's unflinching love and respect for his guru, a trait that has been his life's magnetic compass. Some additional material in this book, have to do with later events, one of them being a chapter on the writing of the Bhagavad Gita that came out in 2005. A second addition concerns a past lifetime when Kriyananda was born as Yogananda's son, Henry, who was to become King Henry I of England. Yogananda was born as William the Conqueror in that lifetime.

What is missing in this book is the agony that had percolated to the surface and found expression in the older book. As I see it, "The New Path" reflects in some way the emergence of the butterfly from the cocoon of human mediocrity. I have also included interviews with a Hindu teacher, two Buddhist monks and ACIM teacher I would classify It's All An Illusion! as a self-help/MBS book and it is aimed at people who may have picked up ACIM and thought that it was all too far-fetched to believe. It is also aimed at people who are interested in MBS books but who may know nothing about ACIM. I also think it would be useful to ACIM followers because the teachings of ACIM are simplified and explained in the book.

Great book. Very well written and easy to read

Great book. Very well written and easy to read. The conclusions Raveena Nash makes resonate very strongly with intuitive beliefs I have had for many years. I've always known there is something very unreal about our existence here on earth and that I am a spiritual being. I don't know that Raveena (or anyone) has the truth 100% correct, but her book is very compelling and thought provoking. Highly recommended to open-minded truth seekers.

A pleasure to read

This attractively produced large format book is a pleasure to read. It is a thought-provoking investigation of the idea that the material world is an illusion, and how we can be helped by that understanding. Raveena Nash has enlivened the book with accounts of her own experiences and insights, making it a very readable introduction to the subject.

Instead of just assuming that all forms of spiritual teaching say basically the same thing, Raveena Nash researched the concept of illusion with care and integrity. Beginning with A Course in Miracles, where she says 'the idea of illusion is at the very heart of the teachings', she goes on to look at illusion in Buddhism and Hinduism. She includes well chosen quotations, and also transcripts of her own interviews with representatives of these religions.

She then considers the teachings of many well known spiritual authors, for example Mary Baker Eddy and Paul Brunton, to see what exactly they have to say on the subject.

The study of illusion is not just of academic interest, and the final chapters discuss the way in which we can follow a pathway of escape from the illusory world and wake up in the eternal reality of Heaven.

Although I don't agree with everything the book says, for anyone interested in A Course in Miracles, philosophy or comparative religion I highly recommend it.

Great for Work, Home, Fun, and Therapy

This game will improve your entire life. I have played this game with my husband, my friends, my coworkers, my bosses, my therapy group, and with strangers. People can't help opening up when they play this game!

One time on a business trip, I was feeling anxious because our plans were changing halfway through the trip and I was afraid I would have to share a room with someone I didn't like. I asked to speak with my boss privately, and I used the cards to express my emotions and my needs. I also used the cards to try and guess her feelings and her needs. After our talk, she made some plan adjustments to our trip that made EVERYONE happy. I was relieved!!!

In a group therapy setting, these cards are great for getting full participation. Both men and women struggle with their feelings and needs and these cards really simplify things. In my therapy class, if I don't bring the cards, someone will complain. :)

What I love most about this game is that it's so versatile. You can use the cards in a serious setting for healing and conflict resolution, or you can whip out these cards on a Friday night and people will act out the emotions and get all silly and have a good time. Either way, you're getting exposure to a vocabulary that every human needs for effective communication.

Wonderful cards, a great way to become familiar with a huge range of feelings and needs. These cards have helped me with self-empathy, identifying my own feelings and needs, and also with empathy for others. they are very good quality cards and come in a handy container.

About the Author
Mikhail Bulgakov (1891 - 1940) was born and educated in Kiev where he graduated as a doctor in 1916. He rapidly abandoned medicine to write some of the greatest Russian literature of this century. After a lifetime at odds with the stultifying Soviet regime, he died impoverished and blind in 1940, shortly after completing his masterpiece, The Master and Margarita. None of his major fiction was published during his lifetime.

Hilarious, Terrifying, and Just Plain Brilliant

I've always been a fan of Russian novels, ever since I read my first Dostoevsky novel at the age of 10...(okay, it was a Classics Illustrated comic book version of Crime and Punishment!)but had never run across anything by Bulgakov until a few years ago. A Russian friend of mine really pressed me to read the book. I bought it, but it just stayed on the shelf until a few weeks ago. All I can say is, I didn't know what I was missing. Master and Margarita is a wickedly funny, sad, frightening, and ultimately haunting masterpiece of fiction.
Bulgakov was one of the first generation of Soviet writers who flourished in the 20s, during the short lived Soviet Experimental movement, and then suffered horribly after the stregnthening of Stalin's regime. Bugakov was primarily a man of the Theater, and something of a theatrical quality hangs on to this book. The chapters have an almost tableaux style construction. When the Stalinist purges began, Bulgakov was began work on Master and Margarita, pretty much to please himself. He knew that he would never live to see it published.
The novel itself is nearly impossible to describe. It consists of three separate plots. On the surface is the visit to Moscow, of the Devil in the guise of a professor named Woland, and his henchmen, two grotesque disfigured men, a naked woman and a cat who plays chess among other things. The group proceeds to essentially terrorize the city's intellectual community, mostly by exposing each character's inner hypocracy. The satire of communist society in this section is quite biting, and uproariously funny. Embedded in this story is a "novel within a novel" ...the story of Pontius Pilate and his encounter with the itinerant spiritual man, Yeshua. Finally, there is the story of the separated lovers, the Master and Margarita, who interweave between the other two stories. They live in the present day Moscow, but the Master ostensibly wrote the manuscript which told the story of Pontius Pilate.
This rich and complicated stew of a book works on so many different levels. At it's most obvious, it is a scathing attack on communism and the cultural elite's complicity with the evils of the system. It is also rather pitiless in it's exposure of the greed, corruption and mendacity of human nature. But Bulgakov is not a conventional moralist. The Devil as Woland is an evil figure...sometimes a terrifying figure, and yet he ends up as the instrument of the redemption of both the Master and Margarita. There is a deep spiritual viewpoint at work here...Early in the novel, Yeshua tells Pilate that, "all men are good", to Pilate's incredulity. In the context of the novel, Yeshua seems hopelessly naive, but by the end of the novel, you wonder if this may actually not be the author's central point. Even the devil is capable of some good here.
This book contains a whole world. Characters change in dizzying fasion and events go by with lightening speed. And yet, by the last pages there is a haunting beauty, an almost incandescent light that shines over the prose. Some of these final images stay etched in my brain even now, several weeks after finishing.
I highly recommend that anyone read this book. It may be one of the greatest novels of the 20th century. It certainly is the greatest Russian novel of the last 100 years!

A masterpiece, but choose a right translation�

I am Russian, and have read this novel (which is my favorite Russian novel), in Russian. However, for some reason, a week ago I decided to look through Michael Glenny's translation of this novel and I was shocked by the various little mistakes in the text. In the very first dialog, one of the main characters asks for a glass of Narzan (which is a famous brand of mineral water in Russia), which M.Glenny translates as lemonade. Close, but no cigar...And it goes further like this. That leads me to believe that the translator probably was not familiar with nuances of Russian language, or may be simply didn't care. Nevertheless, I know that it had been the only one English translation available since 1967 and thanks Mr.Glenny for that. Now we have Mirra Ginsburg's more accurate translation (I have checked), which makes me happy. The novel is truly fascinating. A really remarkable person wrote it. Bulgakov was a doctor by profession, he received an exellent education in the pre-Revolutionary Russia and lived through the horrors and turmoil of the Revolution of 1917 and the Civil war. This is a wonderful satire on Communism and a biblical story. This novel populated by very interesting characters, one of them is "unknown visitor" Woland, who is the Satan visiting Moscow with his entourage. Woland is a complex figure, a diabolical seducer, father of lies - the Devil himself, but also "he, who has brought the light" - Lucifer. He laughs at the Soviet Communists, who mistakenly think that they have rooted out all evil and have build a society which is even beyond the good and evil. In the clash with Woland they watch how the "perfect" and godless society crumbles down. Please read it, and you will enjoy it, because the novel goes beyond Russian culture to the world of archetypal characters and events that have meaning to all humans.

where to begin...

I suppose that I can start by saying that "The Master and Margarita" has been my favorite book for over 7 years now (that says a lot since I read quite a bit!). I don't think it is necessary to discuss the plot of the book, since you can read what the book is about by looking at the editorial reviews. However, I will comment on the various translations.
Without a doubt, the book in the original Russian is incomparable, but if you don't read Russian I would recommend the Burgin/Tiernan O'Connor translation. The first translation I ever read was Mirra Ginsburg's - although it is very charming and enjoyable, certain bits of conversation as well as almost an entire chapter are omitted from this translation. I have also read parts of Michael Glenny's translation, and I don't feel that his translation accurately relays the depth, rhythm and richness of Bulgakov's style. Burgin/Tiernan O'Connor has given the most complete and accurate translation of this work. Another superb feature of this translation is the commentary section at the end of the text, which is very helpful in understanding what influenced Bulgakov, and is especially helpful if the reader is not familiar with certain aspects of Soviet culture while the book was written (during the 1930's).
Lastly, I have to comment on the thing that I love most about "The Master and Margarita" - it is impossible to classify this book as one certain genre. This book is a philosophical and religious novel, an historical novel, a satire, a love story, an action/adventure, and a fantasy all rolled into one. Simply put, it is timeless - an original, brilliant and beautiful novel.
