About the Author
Stephen M. Stahl is Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego and Honorary Visiting Senior Fellow in Psychiatry at the University of Cambridge, UK. He has conducted various research projects awarded by the National Institute of Mental Health, Veterans Affairs, and the pharmaceutical industry. Author of more than 500 articles and chapters, Dr Stahl is also the author of the bestseller Stahl's Essential Psychopharmacology.

A little frustrated: The book is heavy but the kindle poorly formatted

I needed a reference prescription guide that I could refer to constantly, even if on the go. Stahl is what was repeated recommended, but when I received the book I realized that it was far too big to want to carry everywhere I go. It make be smaller, but it's definitely a desk reference.

I was disappointed to find that the digital version is basically just the text of the book. It has none of the useful formatting or color-coding that makes the book so approachable.

So in the end, I had to choose: Useful book or portable download....and I actually choose the book. Why can't publishers understand that the digital version has to be AT LEAST as good at the book?!

As a psychiatric prescriber this book has come in handy on a daily basis. I've had this book for two years. It is at the top of my reference list, because it is a great resource for medications and the layout is very organized. It is easy to find the information needed. It has all the basic information needed plus additional practice tips and clinical pearls. It is heavy but there is pertinent information throughout, and it covers a variety of medications. The binding began separating about one month after use. I've taped the pages together. It'd be nice if it came in a spiral binding.

Worth owning

Fantastic reference...lousy binding. I originally purchased this book in August of 2015. The pages started to come out from middle within 2 months. I limped along with it for a while thinking it was just a bad apple, then ordered another book July of 2016. The darn thing did the same thing. I'm just sick about it. This is a spendy book and now I have two that are defective. I don't misuse or over bend the binding. I need this invaluable reference, but the publishing quality stinks. 5 stars for reference...1 star for book construction.

About the Author

David B. Magleby is a Distinguished Professor of Political Science, Senior Research Fellow at the Center for the Study of Elections and Democracy, and Dean of the College of Family, Home and Social Science at Brigham Young University.� He received his B.A. from the University of Utah and his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, and has also taught at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and the University of Virginia.� He has directed national studies of campaign finance and campaign communications in competitive federal election environments involving a consortium of academics from nearly 80 universities and colleges in 38 states. This research is summarized in six edited books. In addition, he is co-editor of a longstanding series of books on financing federal elections. In partnership with colleagues, he has been studying the implementation of new voting technology, work funded in part by the National Science Foundation. He has been a Fulbright Scholar at Oxford University and a past president of Pi Sigma Alpha, the national political science honor society. Magleby is the recipient of many teaching awards including the 1990 Utah Professor of the Year award from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education and the Carnegie Foundation, the 2001 Rowman & Littlefield Award for Innovative Teaching in Political Science, and several department and university awards.

Paul C. Light is the Paulette Goddard Professor of Public Service at New York University’s Wagner School of Public Service. He received his B.A. from Macalester College and his Ph.D from the University of Michigan. Professor Light has a wide-ranging career in both academia and government. He has worked on Capitol Hill as a senior committee staffer in the U.S. Senate and as an American Political Science Association Congressional Fellow in the U.S. House. He has taught at the University of Virginia, University of Pennsylvania, and Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He has also served as a senior adviser to several national commissions on federal, state, and local public service. He is the author of 15 books on government, public service, and public policy. Light’s current research focuses on government reform, Congress, the presidency, and social entrepreneurship. He was the founding director of the Brookings Institution’s Center for Public Service and continues his research on how to invite Americans to serve their communities through public service. His work has been funded by the Douglas Dillon Foundation, the Pew Charitable Trusts, the David and Lucille Packard Foundation, among many others.

Christine Nemacheck is an Associate Professor of Political Science at the College of William & Mary and has been the College's Pre-Law Advisor since the fall 2007.� She received her BA in History from the University of Michigan, and her MA and PhD from the George Washington University. She has taught previously at Iowa State University. Her book examining Supreme Court nomination politics, Strategic Selection: Presidential Nomination of Supreme Court Justices from Herbert Hoover through George W. Bush, was published in March 2007. The paperback edition of the book was released in 2008. Her work has also appeared in Congress and the Presidency, Drake Law Review and a number of edited volumes. She is also a recipient of the College's Alumni Fellowship Award for 2007.

Great Intro to American Politics Textbook

Excellent intro to politics text. I highly recommend it for a classroom or for anyone really who wants to sit down with a plain-spoken piece to get you to understand our government. Whether it is for someone with little knowledge as to who this vast bureaucracy works, or for someone with a fairly good knowledge of it all - I don't think it will disappoint.
I think what I appreciated the most was the honesty that the text was written. The authors also included a good amount of humor to emphasize the point (in cartoon, comic, Top 10 List, etc), in order to keep a reader interested.
I think this text is also a good reference as well, as there are numerous court cases and explicit examples of gov't at work - that if you are ever at a loss for "what was it that happened?" or "what does that term mean?" Things are extremely easy to find and be referred to.

Another winner from Zeltserman

Dave Zeltserman's newest (yes, the prolific bastard puts out like three a year) is OUTSOURCED. It's a crime/heist novel about Dan, a laid off software engineer. At 48 years old, his re-hire prospects are grim, and he's slowly losing his sight (retinitis pigmentosa) to boot. Creeping ever closer to defaulting on his mortgage, and desperate to provide for his family, he schemes to rob a bank, or more specifically, to rob the safety deposit boxes that belong to a reputed Russian mobster. Dan gets a bunch of his has-been friends in on the clumsy yet clever caper, and stuff goes way wrong, quickly.

OUTSOURCED is brilliantly paced and reminiscent of A SIMPLE PLAN with the supposed non-criminals slowly descending into desperation and violence, and Zeltserman gives the characters (Dan, in particularly) a kind of heartbreaking vulnerability as well. Another great crime novel from Zeltserman.

If we're all still around and reading books 20-30 years from now, I can totally envision the next generation of crime/noir readers-the ones discovering and raving about Chandler and Hammet-finding all of Zelterman's books too, and greedily inhaling them.

My Favorite Zeltserman (Thus Far!)

Dan Wilson is out of work and on the verge of losing his eyesight. With a mortgage to pay and a family to support, he is an ordinary guy desperate for money. He conceives a can't-miss bank heist, enlists the help of some friends, and then--surprise!--things don't go exactly as planned. Dave Zeltserman cleverly and effectively engineers the plot with a steady supply of action and surprises. In sum, OUTSOURCED is thoroughly entertaining noir in a traditional vein.

David Zeltserman has outdone himself with this book. I had trouble putting the book down. If you haven't read anything by Mr. Zeltserman this would be a great place to start. I really hope they make a movie out of this book. A very enjoyable read.

Complement to NR by Press et al

This book is a bargain. It is in my mind on the same par set by Numerical recipes, though it tends to be complementary (typically NR gives a better 30,000 foot view). It can be a bit dense at times, and you find that you will have to often hop around from place to place to understand the author's explanation of a given method, but it is an excellent book. The coverage is extensive, and the free code is fairly useful (though certainly far from ideal). Just like with NR, the book is what is useful, not the code (for those that don't know, due to draconian licensing restrictions, NR is worthless for commerical use anyway, to say nothing of the fact that it would be daunting to try and reverse engineer that byzantine mess into CUDA or OpenCL for modern high performance use).

So as a reference, or as a text to teach/learn numerical methods for scientific computing, the book excels.
