Amazing book!

If you read Larman's book, which is considered by many to be THE BOOK on OOAD, and walked away still unsure of how to apply his ideas in the real world, then this book is for you. While Larman's book reads like a college text book(No disrespect intended), this book is concise, and walks you through how to think in OOAD. By showing you many examples and the pros and cons of modeling each in different ways, you gain a much deeper understanding of the fundamental concepts. I own over 100 technical books and must say that this is by far the most USEFUL BOOK I have ever purchased!

One of the Best Books for one of the Worst Subjects

Let's face it: UML is BS.
Ok, maybe I am being a bit too drastic here. Let's say that, apart from the occasional class or interaction diagram it's an useless way of introducing extra complexity, maintainability problems and fluff in a world (software development) that doesn't need any of that. A quick look at his history will clarify that further. UML is basically a commercial venture, an investment made by Rational Software (now IBM) to hire the the three most influential guys in the visual modeling business so that they could sell a ridiculously priced tool ( ex rational rose, now XDE) to spit out and maintain those useless diagrams. Unfortunately, their marketing department has been quite successful in convincing managers ( not so much the good programmers) that UML is a vital element of a successful project. So, you might be doomed to have to spend some valuable time in learning this totally artificial, nonsensical, useless, boring toy. If that's the case, I can recommend you this book. It's one of the best since it takes the most practical and hands on approach possible, guiding you through many small, varied case studies, making the subject almost bearable.
I have read the French edition that just came out in 2008, if you can read a basic French I suggest you do the same ( you can buy it form amazon.fr), otherwise for the moment you will be stuck with the older translated edition...
If you try to learn UML with a theory (fluff) book like "The Object Primer" you will run away screaming, trust me ;) Another good read is "Applying UML & Patterns" by Craig Larman. (No big surprise that the two guys have worked together...) I just wish these two very smart guys had spent their wits & energies for something better than UML..

Masterful

Several years ago I read a book called the Dancing Wu Li Masters in which the author concluded that what sets masters apart is that they teach the essence of a subject. By that standard Roques is truly a UML master. UML in Practice leads the reader through a number of case studies from the initial conceptual models, through functional, static and dynamic models to the resulting application design. Along the way Roques provides highly useful insights, best practices and formal patterns.
UML in Practice was originally published in French and appears to have been translated by the author himself. While the translation is less than perfect (and there are a few incomprehensible sentences), on the whole the quirkiness of the language adds a bit of levity to the book.

A good writers and composition handbook

I taught this book for three years at a community college. It was in between using two Diana Hacker books Rules for Writers and the Bedford Handbook.

For myself, this book is very comprehensive. If I could, I could have taught the entire course using this text, although our college requires an additional "reader." There are enough sample essays and other pieces in here that the reader portion could be done with this book. Its approach is encyclopedic to grammar, punctuation, usage, and spelling problems.

I also found its section on composition essentials very well done, particularly chapter 4 on paragraphs. I found their explanation of how to do MLA papers and research papers in general quite useful.

Before we used this textbook, I would usually download supplementary information from net websites on paragraphing and MLA papers to fill in the gap between what students wanted to know and what the textbooks said on these and other subject. However, the Little,Brown Handbook was so full of information, that I did not have to do that during the years I used this book.

This is a good book if one is embarking on a serious campaign as a writer. When I was more active as a writer, I found that other writers and copy editors on publications I worked on continually stocked up on such books. These are the best places to look for clarification on problems of grammar, mechanicws, and usage. Surprisingly, even for the experienced degreed writer, what such books say about improving rhetoric or diction is often useful, the basics we can forget easily.

As such, even though our college has moved back to Hacker, I will keep it out as a reference for my own writing and editing.

Yet, as a text book for an individual composition course, its sixty dollar price, makes the book an outrageous drag on already emptied student pockets. The scandal of the price of university texts needs to be exposed and investigated.

Essential tool for all wordsmiths, not just students

Although intended primarily for students, The Little Brown Handbook is an excellent reference for all nonfiction writers. While writing my own recent book on option pricing, I consulted it often regarding the use of colons, semicolons, dashes, and other fine points of punctuation. It even served as an arbiter of correct grammar and usage in the occasional dispute with my copy editor! Almost everything critical to good writing is covered--from organization, paragraph coherence, and sentence structure, to punctuation, word choice, and issues of style--and in sufficient detail to be useful to the working wordsmith. Guidelines for academic writers, a discussion of the American Psychological Association (APA) style employed in the social sciences, and suggestions for use of the internet in research, also appear in The Little Brown Handbook. All in all, this book should be found near the Strunk and White classic, The Elements of Style, on any writer's bookshelf. I would unhesitatingly recommend it to anyone who writes, either for pleasure or for a living.

New E-book only accessible if you also have a "Course code"

This book and CD set is sold as an ebook with an access code that you do get when you open the packaging. The publisher wants to make sure no one reuses the code, so they also require a "course code" when you go online to gain access to open the ebook. Well, my son was in a high school class that requires the hardback, but not the CD. I thought he lugs around enough heavy textbooks, so I thought I'd spend the extra money for the ebook for him since he carries an iPad, also. Unfortunately the publisher's customer service department was not able to help us gain access to the ebook without this magic "course" code. (Don't know why they don't have a generic one that could be use for just such situations.) Anyway, you don't want to buy this version for the ebook unless your teacher / professor uses the MyCompLab whole set up. The other way the publisher could prevent the reuse of the CD access code they send in the packaging is to issue unique codes on every new CD. Boom. Done. No problem, no "course code" required. How about it, Little, Brown?

The introduction states that the aim of this book is to provide "the essential clinical, diagnostic and treatment aspects of secondary hypertension." These topics are covered by succinct and authoritative overviews that provide an agreeable balance between evidence-based medicine and skilled clinical experience. (Figure) Appropriately, the first two chapters deal with refractory and iatrogenic hypertension. Resistance to treatment, or the exclusion of obvious factors that could cause resistance, is among the most important reasons for starting diagnostic maneuvers to detect secondary forms of hypertension. Even though the two chapters overlap somewhat, they cover the most important problems, and the uncertainties in the definition of refractory hypertension simply reflect the present state of clinical practice. In my opinion, an experienced practitioner may make a diagnosis of refractory hypertension only after a patient has been treated with the right combination of three drugs for at least one month and after the possibilities of nonadherence to treatment and misleading blood-pressure measurements have been excluded. Hypertension secondary to renal disease is also clearly described. The most controversial issue is the treatment of renovascular hypertension. The few randomized trials comparing revascularization with medical therapy are too small to serve as the basis for making a meaningful choice between the two treatments. In the absence of convincing trials, the good results obtained with angioplasty in fibromuscular dysplasia favor this treatment for renovascular hypertension as well. In the case of atherosclerotic renal-artery stenosis, the decision is more difficult. Clinical practice and anecdotal observation point to a subgroup of patients who may benefit from revascularization with stenting to reduce the progression of either renal-artery stenosis or renal failure (particularly when there is stenosis in both kidneys). The procedure may also be used to lower blood pressure in patients already receiving a multidrug combination or to treat patients with coronary heart disease, cardiac insufficiency, or hypertensive encephalopathy. The clinical problems associated with disorders of the adrenal cortex receive a well-balanced review. I personally prefer magnetic resonance imaging over computed tomography for the detection of morphologic adrenal abnormalities and the use of eplerenone over spironolactone for the treatment of primary aldosteronism (to prevent the side effects of spironolactone). The ratio of plasma aldosterone to plasma renin activity, which is still not widely used in screening for primary aldosteronism, is thoroughly discussed. I particularly appreciated the chapter on nonprimary aldosteronism for its concise descriptions of all the monogenic or mendelian forms of hypertension. Patients with these forms of the disease share an abnormality in sodium transport across the renal tubuli. In the much more common "primary," or "essential," hypertension, subtle abnormalities in renal pathways for sodium transport may also be involved. In patients who have paroxysmal hypertension, palpitations, nervousness, tremor, excessive sweating, pallor, or erythema (together or in various combinations), it is not easy to distinguish between pseudopheochromocytoma due to short-term activation of the sympathetic nervous system in response to stressful stimuli (of which not all patients are aware) and the much less frequent classic pheochromocytoma. The two chapters dealing with this problem are very well written, with discussions that are neat and to the point. Careful clinical evaluation and simple algorithms are needed to avoid unnecessary tests to make the diagnosis of secondary forms of hypertension in children and adolescents. The chapter dealing with this topic is very useful, as is the one entitled "Sleep Apnea and Hypertension," which covers important aspects of the association between breathing disorders during sleep and hypertension, a connection that is not well recognized in clinical practice. Since arterial hypertension affects about 30 percent of the people in industrialized countries, this book should be in the library of primary care physicians, internists, and specialists in nephrology, cardiology, and endocrinology. Very very artistic

I bought this book after borrowing it from the local library. They had many copies. I wanted it in my personal reference collection. This is a very unique book. It is written in a conversational style using hip hop characters. The book is entertaining and an easy read. It covers quickly the basis of drawing but mostly focus in on the special techniques you would perform to create hip hop characters. I love the chapters concentrating on gear, movement, posture and characterization. You will enjoy reading the book as well as be amazed at the work and if you follow the easy directions you will be able to draw hip hop. This is the only book I have found on this topic that is on point. I highly recommend it for beginners as well as advance artist. Great Job!

Nice Style for comics...

This was a nice book, not too different from any other art book but the Hip Hip style seems to be a lot cleaner and easier. My style is very much traditional and more Image Comics, but I do like this and will probably start experimenting with it. I'm really tired of the manga stuff, but this style looks really nice.

Also this book was very easy to follow, but I think what makes it stand out more is its presentation. It teaches drawing in a narrative style which was very new to me. I enjoyed the art itself and would like to work with it a little more.

After completing an MA by Thesis at the University of Manchester I trained as a Chartered Accountant with Arthur Andersen in Birmingham. After qualification in 1975 I took up an appointment as Lecturer in Accounting in the Department of Accounting and Finance, University of Manchester. In 1979-80 I was Visiting Associate Professor of Accounting, Tulane Business School, New Orleans In 1984 I moved to the University of Essex as Senior Lecturer in Accounting in the Department of Economics and was subsequently promoted to Reader in 1987. In 1988 I was the founding Head of the Department of Accounting and Financial Management, University of Essex, and was appointed the first Professor in the Department in 1989. Subsequently, I served as Dean of the School Social Sciences (1995-97), Dean of the Graduate School (1997-99), Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Academic Standards (1999-2002), and Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Academic Development (2002-06). In 2001 I was an Erskine Fellow at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand and since 2006 I have been a Visiting Professor of Management at CASS Business School. In August 2008 I was appointed the Director of the newly established Essex Business School, a merger of the School of Accounting, Finance and Management in Colchester, and the School of Entrepreneurship & Business in Southend.

Professor Turley has held a Chair in Accounting at the University of Manchester since 1994. He has held visiting appointments in Sweden, Denmark and Australia. Since 2001 he has been an academic member of the Auditing Practices Board, which sets practice and ethical standards for auditors in the UK and Ireland. He is also a member of the Scientific Committee of the European Auditing Research Network and the Research Committee of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Scotland, and serves on the editorial boards of several journals.

About the Author
Dr. Ralph Stair received a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University, an M.B.A. from Tulane University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Oregon. He has taught at the University of Oregon, the University of Washington, the University of New Orleans, and Florida State University. He has taught several courses through Florida State University's Study Abroad Program in London. Throughout the years, Dr. Stair has focused his teaching and research on information systems. He has endowed the Ralph Stair Prize in Innovative Education at Florida State University. He also provided funding for the Stair-Harkrider scholarship and the Ralph Stair Prize in Academic Improvement at his high school in Wisconsin.

Professor George Reynolds brings a wealth of business, teaching, and writing experience to this book. His successful business career spans four decades of working in government, institutional, and business IS organizations. Professor Reynolds combines this business and industry experience with exceptional teaching skills to deliver a text that is both practical and focused on the needs of today's student. Professor Reynolds has taught IS at the University of Cincinnati, Xavier University (Ohio), Miami University (Ohio), the College of Mount St. Joseph, and Strayer University. The kindle version of this book is broken. I REPEAT.. DO NOT GET THE KINDLE VERSION OF THE BOOK. Another reviewer pointed this out but I made the mistake of not reading the reviews and here I am now. 5 days behind in my class praying my physical copy arrives on time.

Now I have to pay for the full version of the book instead of renting it.

Amazon is blaming this on the publisher. It is a bunch of BS though. AND THE CUSTOMER SERVICE I GOT WITH REGARD TO THIS WAS COMPLETE S***. AMAZON IS ON THE WAY DOWN IF THIS IS HOW THEY ARE GOING TO START TREATING CUSTOMERS.

Lots of Information presented

Chocked full of information. The test bank produced by the publisher (not included) seems to be geared for a tech school level class, not a graduate level class. (Example: T or F : Oracle enjoys a 45% market share) However, that is really no reflection on the text itself. I mention it only to say if your class uses this publisher's test bank, be prepared to memorize endless minutiae.
