solid maths treatment of problems

The book offers a solid education in the subject of fluid mechanics. The treatment works upwards from Newton's equations into the seminal Navier-Stokes equations. From these, various physical configurations, like pipes and flat surfaces, are discussed. Exact solutions are derived, where possible, and approximate solutions where not.
Laminarity and the onset of turbulence are also prominently highlighted, with the use of the Reynolds number as the single most important indicator of the transition between the states.
The authors also do not neglect experimental considerations. While their discussion of this is somewhat abbreviated, it is competently done and offers the student a good foundation.

A very clear presentation of fluid mechanics.

This is an excellent textbook on fluid mechanics. I truly recommend it for an intermediate undergraduate class and/or for a first year graduate class on fluid mechanics. This text gives significant insight on the physical aspects of fluid mechanics with good mathematical rigors. All important topics are treated : Governing Equation, Potential Flow, Laminar Flow, Boundary Layer, Hydrodynamic Stability, Turbulent Flow, Compressible Flow, Experimental Techniques. Some sections (ex: Compressible Flow) should be enlarged and several typos corrected in a next edition.
In addition, the style of the authors is excellent. I read this book for self-study and each pages captivated me. I rarely find a textbook so interesting to read.
