Super Fun Follow Up to The Allegra Biscotti Collection
By Allison Bailey
Allegra Biscotti, groundbreaking new fashion designer, has a secret. She is actually a 14 year old girl named Emma Rose living in Manhattan. In book 1, The Allegra Biscotti Collection, she is accidentally discovered and asked to keep silent about her real identity. After all, who would take a 14 year old fashion designer seriously? In this installment, Emma is asked to design a collection for an exciting display AND a dress for a swanky Sweet Sixteen Party for a student at her school. With a bumbling new Italian assistant, a best friend who doesn't understand why Emma is so busy all of a sudden, and the mother running the Sweet Sixteen Party all trying to make Emma's life more difficult, how is she ever supposed to get the new collection designed in time?

Obviously this book is written for younger than YA. The back of the book labels it as Juvenile Fiction/Independent Reader, and the content is certainly appropriate for young children. I enjoyed this book because it was so fun, and Emma's best guy friend, Charlie, is hilarious. I would love to be friends with him even now. The descriptions of the clothes are also really fun- I wish there really was an Allegra Biscotti!

One thing that I would change about the book is that I was totally convinced that there was a sinister sub-plot brewing, but the climax was actually a bit of a let down. The "action" ended too soon, in my opinion, but the ending was also really sweet. Sometimes it is nice when everything works out smoothly in the end, and perhaps it has been too long since I've read juvenile fiction of this type.

I would recommend this as juvenile chick lit, and girls around the 3rd-6th grades would probably enjoy it. It was very easy to read, and it might be a good "book club" type book for girl scouts or something- there is definitely a positive girl power message. It could also be a great book to read to kids before bed. Super cute and very fun.

Ray Arcel: A Boxing Biography, by Donald Dewey

Without Ray Arcel (1899-1994), the 20th century world of boxing would have been markedly different. The credibility of it as a sport would have been greatly lessened. Arcel's prominence is all the more interesting because he made his mark not as a fighter, promoter, or manager, but as a trainer. From Benny Leonard to Roberto Duran and Larry Holmes, Arcel stood in the corner for champions of every weight division that existed in his lifetime, a record that remains unequalled.

This biography chronicles Arcel's life inside the ring--and outside, where he was a highly secretive man who maintained relationships with some of the chief mob figures of his day. Through a wealth of information from Arcel's unpublished memoir, this work offers an extraordinary portrait of one of boxing's most influential and enigmatic figures.

Expensive and very little information about Arcel and his training methods.
By Michael G. Haggerty
Expensive and very little information about Arcel and his training methods. Repeated things that were common knowledge. Very disappointed. Would not recommend this. I appreciate the work, research and time the author put into this effort but being a boxing and boxing trainer fan maybe I was expecting too much.

A Marvelous Tale
By New Jersey Nick
Donald Dewey is a wonderful story teller. And Ray Arcel's is a wonderful story. Dewey, whom everyone knows for his baseball books and biographies of actors, branches out here to recount the life of boxing's greatest trainer. Arcel's career spanned from the 1920s to the 1980s -- with an important hiatus from the 1950s to the 1970s. He was in the corner for 18 champions, including Barney Ross, Benny Leonard, Jimmy Braddock, Tony Zale, and Ezzard Charles -- names that thrill an old boxing fan. But this is more than a ringside biography. Dewey uncovered never before told stories about the personal life of the secretive Arcel, who was as abstemious in his personal habits as others in the ring world he inhabited were self indulgent. While promoting matches for ABC in the early 1950s, Arcel fell afoul of organizaed crime, which had an interest in a rival television outlet for boxing and suffered a severe beating. That's when he retired only to return to the ring to work with Roberto Duran (Yes he was there for the infamous "No mas" incident) and with Larry Holmes (for his dramatic title defense against Gerry Cooney). Dewey's Ray Arcel: A Boxing Biography is a major contribution to the literature of a sport that has over the years attracted some of the best American writers.

Immortality: The Quest to Live Forever and How It Drives Civilization, by Stephen Cave

A fascinating work of popular philosophy and history that both enlightens and entertains, Stephen Cave’s Immortality investigates whether it just might be possible to live forever and whether we should want to. But it also makes a powerful argument, which is that it’s our very preoccupation with defying mortality that drives civilization.

In drawing back the curtain on what compels humans to “keep on keeping on,” Cave engages the reader in a number of mind-bending thought experiments. He teases out the implications of each immortality gambit, asking, for example, how long a person would live if they did manage to acquire a perfectly disease-free body. Or what would happen if a super-being tried to round up the atomic constituents of all who’ve died in order to resurrect them. Or what our loved ones would really be doing in heaven if it does exist. Or what part of us actually lives in a work of art, and how long that work of art can survive.

Toward the book’s end, we’re confronted with a series of brain-rattling questions: What would happen if tomorrow humanity discovered that there is no life but this one? Would people continue to care about their favorite sports team, please their boss, vie for the title of Year’s Best Salesman? Would three-hundred-year projects still get started?

Immortality is a deeply satisfying book, as optimistic about the human condition as it is insightful about the true arc of history.

Review
"This book by Stephen Cave offers a helpful framework for understanding the various different kinds of immortality. Cave employs this framework to analyze these types of immortality and to argue that the quest for immortality is misguided. Cave's insights throughout the book are deep, and his argumentation is compelling and well-informed by all of the relevant literature. It is also a beautifully written and highly accessible book. I recommend it highly." –John Martin Fischer leader of the Templeton Foundation's Immortality Project, and author of Near-Death Experiences

“Cave has produced a strikingly original and compelling exploration of the age-old conundrum: Can we live forever, and do we really want to?” —John Horgan, author of The End of Science

The author presents very good arguments showing there is no soul
By Show-Me Skeptic
A very well-written book. The author presents very good arguments showing there is no soul, no reincarnation and no immortality.

For example, Chapter 7: “The Lost Soul”
Pages 186-187.

If your optic nerves in your brain are sufficiently badly damaged, you will no longer be able to see –- you will go blind. This tells us very clearly that the faculty of sight is dependent upon functioning optic nerves. Yet curiously, when many people imagine their soul leaving their body, they imagine being able to see -– they imagine, for example, looking down on their own corpse or on their own funeral procession. They believe, therefore, that their immaterial soul has the faculty of sight. But if the soul can see when the entire brain and body have stopped working, why can’t it see when only the optic nerves have stopped working? In other words, if blind people have a soul that can see, why are they blind?

This question has no satisfactory answer, and indeed some thoughtful theologians, such as Thomas Aquinas, have accepted that a soul without a body cannot see -– seeing is something that is done by a body and brain with eyes and optic nerves in working order.

But we now know that, just as damage to the optic nerve can destroy the faculty of sight, so damage to other parts of the brain can destroy faculties like memory and reason. Increasingly, evidence suggests that all aspects of the mind and personality are in this way dependent on the brain. So, paralleling our question about the blind person, we can ask about someone with brain damage who is unable to think rationally or feel emotions:
“If they actually have a soul that is able to think rationally or feel emotions, why can’t they think rationally or feel emotions? Why would localized brain damage stand in the way when destruction of the whole brain and body does not?”

An Everlasting Book! Fantastic!

Immortality: The Quest to Live Forever and How it Drives Civilization by Stephen Cave

" Immortality" is the fascinating and thought-provoking book about life, death and civilization. It's about humankind's quest by one or a combination of four paths that promise immortality and whether any of these paths can deliver on that promise. Finally, with the newfound wisdom it's about following a philosophy of life that provides us with a meaningful existence. Stephen Cave holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from Cambridge University and a writer who skillfully provides the reader with a gem of a book that is enlightening and a joy to read. This 338-page book is broken out into four parts that correspond to the four narratives of immortality and a conclusion: Part I. Staying Alive, Part II. Resurrection, Part II. Soul, and Part IV. Legacy.

Positives:
1. A well written, accessible book for the masses.
2. A mesmerizing topic: immortality. The author treats the topic with utmost care and respect.
3. A fantastic format that follows logically with the author's overall thesis.
4. The four immortality narratives: Staying Alive, Resurrection, Soul, and Legacy. The entire book revolves around these four main paths.
5. The author clearly presents three main goals upfront and thoroughly succeeds in achieving them.
6. Each chapter begins with an interesting historical vignette in which the author highlights the main topic of the chapter.
7. In the first path of immortality the author goes through a number of examples that clearly show how the determination to stay alive and reproduce is one thing that all life forms have in common.
8. The Morality Paradox. The immortality narratives were created to resolve the paradox.
9. Great use of secular, religious and scientific viewpoints to go through all the arguments. Great stuff!
10. Thought-provoking quotes and ideas: "These psychologists were testing the hypothesis that we have developed our cultural worldviews in order to protect ourselves from the fear of death". Interesting.
11. The author goes through various and diverse civilizations to explain his thesis. Thus keeping the book fresh and interesting. "Civilization is built on the promise of immortality".
12. Attempts to engineer immortality. The Engineering Approach to immortality. Transhumanists...
13. The significance of resurrection and the three major problems with it.
14. The impact of Paul to Christianity.
15. The importance of rituals, "This is the function of religion at its grandest: enabling mere mortals to attain cosmic significance, to become one with their gods and so to attain immortality."
16. Cryonics, interesting stuff.
17. My favorite section of the book, the thorough debunking of the soul.
18. The idea of the soul, its claims and the implications.
19. The history and evolution of the concept of the soul. From soul to self...
20. The argument from neuroscience against the existence of the soul.
21. The concepts of heaven.
22. Scientific and religious looks at the soul. Eastern and Western religions.
23. Legacy what it means and how it is achieved. Great examples.
24. Great quotes, "Jean Rostand wrote in 1939, "Kill one man, and you are a murderer. Kill millions of men, and you are a conqueror. Kill them all, and you are a god."
25. Fascinating facts, " By spring 2011, Facebook, had over 600 million active users and counting."
26. The "bundle theory" of the self and the problems associated with it.
27. Nation's myth of common ancestry.
28. Planet Earth, the biggest superorganism, Gaia. Global consciousness.
29. The author does a wonderful job of summarizing his finding into a satisfying conclusion.
30. A positive, secular outlook to death. The Wisdom Narrative.
31. Some great closing thoughts that will stick with me, " This is no doubt why medieval European rulers found Christianity so useful--it taught their exploited subjects to avert their eyes from the horror of their daily lives and dream instead of a future paradise."
32. How these narratives contribute to what our civilizations are.
33. A look at the impact of infinity. Enlightening.
34. The three virtues on our view of life and death.
35. A page turner of a book.

Negatives:
1. No formal bibliography.
2. A notes section was provided but it was not linked to the body of the book.
3. The author overstays his welcome a tad with the last chapter. That is, it was too long and started becoming preachy but if that's the worst thing I can find about this book well you know you got yourself a gem.
4. Charts and illustrations would have added value. For example, a chart illustrating the worldview on immortality would have been welcomed.

In summary, I really enjoyed this book. First of all, this is philosophy at its best. It asks the big questions and it follows a path that is logical and reasonable. It tackles fascinating topics surrounding immortality and it ends with a satisfying conclusion. My favorite part of this book was Part III. The Soul; finally, an author who spends some time addressing the soul in a comprehensive manner. This book was a real treat for me, treat yourself and get it! I highly recommend it.

Good recipes you will actually want to eat!
By Angela C
Too often GERD menus seem bland and not even worth eating. I usually give up and go back to eating regular food because the bland diet plan seems horrid. I am a picky eater, add picky eater to bland diet and I do the worst thing; I go without food because the food I think I am allowed to eat sounds worse than being hungry.

This book has recipes that are bland but not flavorless! There are ingredients I never thought of adding before. I am going to try the recipes but I can already tell I will eat most of them. That is gets it five stars right there.

The book is simply written, not hard to understand and the recipes are easy to prepare. There are suggestions here that include salads, breakfasts, lunches and dinners.

I think what impressed me the most was Colleen Colman mentions B-12 deficients and the fact that GERD and gastritis can cause it. This is something I did not realize for nearly thirty years, and the doctors did not notice nor mention it. I was getting more and more tired. Finally, one of them checked my blood work and told me they wanted to try me on a few shots because my levels were on the lowest end of normal. It worked. I am a new person and have energy once we figured out the issue.

This is a good book to have in your library if you have GERD or gastritis, either as a newly diagnosed person or a long term sufferer.

Named a Best Book of 2016 by Kirkus Reviews
A New York Times Editor’s Choice

“A worthy and necessary addition to the contemporary canon of civil rights literature.” —The New York Times

In this “thought-provoking and important” (Library Journal) analysis of state-sanctioned violence, Marc Lamont Hill carefully considers a string of high-profile deaths in America—Sandra Bland, Freddie Gray, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Trayvon Martin, and others—and incidents of gross negligence by government, such as the water crisis in Flint, Michigan. He digs underneath these events to uncover patterns and policies of authority that allow some citizens become disempowered, disenfranchised, poor, uneducated, exploited, vulnerable, and disposable. To help us understand the plight of vulnerable communities, he examines the effects of unfettered capitalism, mass incarceration, and political power while urging us to consider a new world in which everyone has a chance to become somebody. Heralded as an essential text for our times, Marc Lamont Hill’s galvanizing work embodies the best traditions of scholarship, journalism, and storytelling to lift unheard voices and to address the necessary question, “how did we get here?"

Review
''WithNobody, Hill marshals the full weight of multiple scholarly traditions to expose complex, ancient, and intersecting injustices of American racism. This is the book that respects Michael Brown, Sandra Bland, Freddie Gray, Trayvon Martin, and all the other lost black women, men, girls, and boys by taking them seriously. This is the book we needed to understand how we got here and to understand what it means to be here. This is the definitive text. It will remain so for generations.'' --Melissa Harris-Perry, Maya Angelou Presidential Chair at Wake Forest University and Editor-at-Large, Elle.com

''Marc Lamont Hill is the most courageous and progressive voice in 'Main Stream Media,' whose new book,Nobody,is a subtle and persuasive historical and contemporary analysis of our state of emergency in America. He gives new meaning to the now popular idea of ''intersectionality'' with intellectualgustoand politicalurgency!'' --Cornel West, author and professor of philosophy and Christian practice at Union Theological Seminary and professor emeritus at Princeton University

''An essential primer on the relationship between anti-Black racism and state-sanctioned violence, Nobody chronicles historical and social developments around race, class, gender and the role of the State in America which have served to develop, maintain, and expand an expendable underclass. In Hill's book we see how repression breeds resistance, the very same dynamic that has led to an upsurge in the Black Freedom Movement that seeks justice for all of us.'' --Alicia Garza, cocreator of the Black Lives Matter Network

''Marc Lamont Hill proves once again why he is one of the leading voices on race in America. With its fresh insight and careful on-the-ground reporting, Nobody is a powerful call to action that gives a voice to our most vulnerable communities. As with anything Hill writes, this book is essential reading.'' --Neera Tanden, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress

''Marc Lamont Hill has written the book we desperately needed. No mere chronicle of recent anti-Black violence,Nobodydigs deeper, revealing how the killing fields of urban America were tilled by seven decades of Jim Crow and four decades of neoliberalism, turning the very people who brought the prospect of genuine justice, democracy, and citizenship to America into a disposable nation of 'nobodies.' But as Hill reminds us, precarity is not death, the market is not God, and an equitable, just future is in 'nobody's' hands.'' --Robin D. G. Kelley is the Gary B. Nash Professor of American History at UCLA and author of Freedom Dreams; Thelonious Monk; and Africa Speaks, America Answers

''Picking up the baton that James Baldwin left behind, Nobody gives urgent voice to the generation of the descendants of the poor, unacknowledged people Baldwin captured so vividly in his 1985 classic, The Evidence of Things Not Seen.'' --ESSENCE Magazine

''Nobody provides a comprehensive look at the effects, where police are shooting unarmed minority citizens, and their drinking water is literally poisoned . . . . It will constantly energize you and never bore you.'' --The Intercept

''[Hill] challenges us to join a new generation of activists prepared to organize, agitate and act (against the backdrop of state sanctioned violence, economic injustice, social misery, and appeals to fragmentation and fear) on the eminently reasonable proposition that our ''nobodies'' will not have a fair shot at becoming ''somebodies'' until we reduce the unconscionably high and growing gap between America's ''have-gots'' and our ''have-nots.'' --Dr. Glenn C. Altschuler, Thomas and Dorothy Litwin Professor of American Studies at Cornell University Florida Courier

''In our hyper-partisan era, Hill might not be able to persuade many readers who aren't already on the political left. But ''Nobody'' is a sincere effort to do just that, and even those who disagree with him should concede that he's the kind of social commentator -- passionate but rarely hyperbolic, well-informed yet respectful of other points of view -- whose ideas are worthy of our attention.'' --Kevin Canfield The Kansas City Star

Nobody Preface
This is a book about what it means to be Nobody in twenty-first-century America.

To be Nobody is to be vulnerable. In the most basic sense, all of us are vulnerable; to be human is to be susceptible to misfortune, violence, illness, and death. The role of government, however, is to offer forms of protection that enhance our lives and shield our bodies from foreseeable and preventable dangers. Unfortunately, for many citizens—particularly those marked as poor, Black, Brown, immigrant, queer, or trans—State power has only increased their vulnerability, making their lives more rather than less unsafe.

To be Nobody is to be subject to State violence. In recent years, thousands of Americans have died at the hands of law enforcement, a reality made even more shameful when we consider how many of these victims were young, poor, mentally ill, Black, or unarmed. The cases of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri; Eric Garner in New York City; Kathryn Johnston in Atlanta; Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida; Freddie Gray in Baltimore; and Sandra Bland in Hempstead, Texas, have forced a stubborn nation to come to terms with the realities of police corruption, brutality, and deeply entrenched racism. While media coverage and global activism have turned these individuals into household names, they are not, sadly, exceptional. Instead, they represent the countless Americans who die daily, and unnecessarily, at the hands of those who are paid to protect and serve them.

To be Nobody is to also confront systemic forms of State violence. Long before he was standing in front of the barrel of Darren Wilson’s gun, Michael Brown was the victim of broken schools and evaporated labor markets. Prior to being choked to death by Daniel Pantaleo, Eric Garner lived in a community terrorized by policing practices that transform neighborhoods into occupied territories and citizens into enemy combatants. Sandra Bland’s tragic death sequence did not begin with a negligent jailer or an unreasonable cop but with a criminal justice system that has consistently neglected the emotional, physical, and psychological well-being of Black women and girls. For the vulnerable, it is the violence of the ordinary, the terrorism of the quotidian, the injustice of the everyday, that produces the most profound and intractable social misery.

To be Nobody is to be abandoned by the State. For decades now, we have witnessed a radical transformation in the role and function of government in America. An obsession with free-market logic and culture has led the political class to craft policies that promote private interests over the public good. As a result, our schools, our criminal justice system, our military, our police departments, our public policy, and virtually every other entity engineered to protect life and enhance prosperity have been at least partially relocated to the private sector. At the same time, the private sector has kept its natural commitment to maximizing profits rather than investing in people. This arrangement has left the nation’s vulnerable wedged between the Scylla of negligent government and the Charybdis of corporate greed, trapped in a historically unprecedented state of precarity.

To be Nobody is to be considered disposable. In New Orleans, we saw the natural disaster of Hurricane Katrina followed by a grossly unnatural government response, one that killed thousands of vulnerable citizens and consigned many more to refugee status. In Flint, Michigan, we are witnessing this young century’s most profound illustration of civic evil, an entire city collectively punished with lead-poisoned water for the crime of being poor, Black, and politically disempowered. Every day, the nation’s homeless, mentally ill, drug addicted, and poor are pushed out of institutions of support and relocated to jails and prisons. These conditions reflect a prevailing belief that the vulnerable are unworthy of investment, protection, or even the most fundamental provisions of the social contract. As a result, they can be erased, abandoned, and even left to die.

Without question, Nobodyness is largely indebted to race, as White supremacy is foundational to the American democratic experiment. The belief that White lives are worth more than others—what Princeton University scholar Eddie Glaude calls the “value gap”—continues to color every aspect of our public and private lives.1 This belief likewise compromises the lives of vulnerable White citizens, many of whom support political movements and policies that close ranks around Whiteness rather than ones that enhance their own social and economic interests.

While Nobodyness is strongly tethered to race, it cannot be divorced from other forms of social injustice. Instead, it must be understood through the lens of “intersectionality,” the ways that multiple forms of oppression operate simultaneously against the vulnerable.2 It would be impossible to examine the 2015 killing of Mya Hall by National Security Agency police without understanding how sexism and transphobia conspire with structural racism to endanger Black trans bodies. We cannot make sense of Sandra Bland’s tragic death without recognizing the impact of gender and poverty in shaping the current carceral state. To understand the complexity of oppression, we must avoid simple solutions and singular answers.

Despite the centrality of race within American life, Nobodyness cannot be understood without an equally thorough analysis of class. Unlike other forms of difference, class creates the material conditions and relations through which racism, sexism, and other forms of oppression are produced, sustained, and lived. This does not mean that all forms of injustice are due to class antagonism, nor does it mean that all forms of domination can be automatically fixed through universal class struggle. Rather, it means that we cannot begin to address the various forms of oppression experienced by America’s vulnerable without radically changing a system that defends class at all costs.

This book is my attempt to tell the stories of those marked as Nobody. Based on extensive research, as well as my time on the ground—in Ferguson, Baltimore, New York City, Atlanta, Hempstead, Flint, and Sanford—I want to show how the high-profile and controversial cases of State violence that we’ve witnessed over the past few years are but a symptom of a deeper American problem. Underneath each case is a more fundamental set of economic conditions, political arrangements, and power relations that transforms everyday citizens into casualties of an increasingly intense war on the vulnerable. It is my hope that this book offers an analysis that spotlights the humanity of these “Nobodies” and inspires principled action.

"To be Nobody is to be considered disposable"
By Lhea J. Love
Marc Lamont Hill's newest book, Nobody, may very well be the most important text that I've read this year. I highly recommend it.

"To be Nobody is to be considered disposable... Every day, the nation's homeless, mentally ill, drug addicted and poor are pushed out of institutions of support and relocated to jails and prisons."

I fell in love with this book because it is my story. I am the homeless; I am the mentally ill. My cousins are the drug addicted; my neighbors are the poor. We are America's disposable class.

As I read Marc Lamont Hill's book, I began to contemplate the impact of police quotas, rethink the second amendment, and honestly, even as a Michigan resident, I learned a bit about emergency management and this history of Flint.

Marc Lamont Hill's book is a great text for academics, activists and organizers. Or actually, it's great for anyone who gives a damn. It's an honest look at what in the world has been going on in the 21st century. And it's a first step towards dialogues of solution.

Required reading.
By Lucius Couloute
Understanding America's relationship with it's citizens requires a layered examination of inequality-making processes and their cultural bedrock. Hill's analysis helps us do just that with journalistic, historical, and sociological analyses that contextualize the lives of our most vulnerable neighbors - those who by virtue of their race, class, and gender identities have been rendered "nobodies". This book is required reading for those looking to better comprehend inequality today at both the micro and macro level. From Trayvon Martin to Mike Brown and the ongoing Flint water crises, 'Nobody' is an exercise is award-worthy scholarship, all the while keeping us grounded in a pursuit of a better, more equal and just society.

Side note: An alternative title for this book: "For mediocre folk who read about the hood...and the rest of y'all too."

A book for all races
By kara onorato
It is disheartening that a book like this has to even be written. However, if you have experienced oppression and/or poverty, you know what it feels like to be looked at as the disposable class of being "nobody". This book is a window into that life and a reflection in pieces of my own life. A must read!
