Operation Husky: The Canadian Invasion of Sicily, July 10—August 7, 1943, by Mark Zuehlke

July 10, 1943: Aboard over two thousand ships—the largest armada in history—two great Allied Armies readied to invade Sicily. This was Operation Husky, the first step towards winning a toehold in fascist occupied Europe. Among the invaders were 20,000 troops serving in the 1st Canadian Infantry Division and 1st Canadian Tank Brigade—in their first combat experience. Over the next twenty-eight days, the Allied troops carved a path through rugged land despite fierce German opposition.

Operation Husky is story of the young men who battled here, told as only Mark Zuehlke can tell it. Of his other acclaimed books, Quill and Quire declared: “With his signature style of record, Zuehlke’s skill in writing battle narrative remains unsurpassed.” He brings to Operation Husky the same vividly written accounts that put the reader into the heart of Canada’s first divisional-scale campaign of World War II.

Tenacious and Costly
By Jeffrey Swystun
The author continues to make a significant contribution to recognizing and examining the role of Canada in the Second World War. I have read six of his previous efforts including those focusing on the Italian campaign: Ortona, Liri Valley, and The Gothic Line. Zuehlke's style has improved greatly from his earlier work demonstrating a more narrative and engaging style that is increasingly emulating the works of Beevor, Atkinson, and Ryan (who are my favourites). And he has not sacrificed research, detail, and accuracy in this evolution.

The Italian campaign has received increasing attention in the last decade having been relegated to a "sideshow" given the aggregate efforts in WW2. I most enjoyed the politics and planning involved in Operation Husky along with the fascinating challenges related to supply and logistics. This was a complex operation made all the harder for the Canadian contingent when their commander and other leaders were killed in a plane crash shortly before it was to begin. This introduces us to the prickly Simonds, the criticized Vokes (he took heat at Ortona but received redemption in the European campaign), and the highly-competent Hoffmeister (who later was head of Macmillan Bloedel). The tale of McNaughton is also covered here. The underlying theme is rapidly maturing Canadian forces who would make a contribution to the entire war far beyond the relative size of its young nation.

Sicily set the stage for the rest of the fight up Italy: rugged terrain, stubborn Nazi defenders led by Kesselring, Italian apathy and incompetence (soon followed by capitulation), and a tough climate. The Italian campaign veterans were unfairly labeled "D-Day Dodgers" for not having been present for the glory of invading Normandy and liberating Europe. However, this history and others covering Italy clearly demonstrate that the soldiers on both sides fought a tenacious and costly war with the Canadian losing 562 troops in Sicily alone.

IMPORTANT BOOKS...RIVETING READING
By RICH
I can't remember ever giving a book 5 stars before. The five stars here represent my enthusiasm for this book and for author Mark Zuehkle's entire series of Canadian WW II histories, a series that he "unwittingly" (his word) began in 1999 with Ortona, Canada's Epic World War II Battle. In the preface to this book, Zuehlke explains how he embarked upon the unparallelled achievement in Canadian publishing which, with the 2008 release of Operation Husky, brought the series to eight volumes.

A remarkable achievement (his only rival: Tim Cook, author of what many consider the definitive series of books about Canadian troops in WW I.) However, the achievement goes far beyond the book tally.

As Zuehlke puts it, "I have told the story by mixing personal accounts of veterans in with material drawn from official records, regimental histories and many other sources in order to give the reader a "you are there" experience." One of the "many sources" was the work of front-line Canadian Press correspondent (the old-fashioned word for journalist) Ross Munro, whom Kuehlke quotes. Munro was a fabulous writer (there's a photo of him sitting in his shorts on the stony ground, bashing away on his typewriter.) Like the book in which they appear, Munro's accounts are riveting.

When this book was published, Zuehlke urged readers to seek out "a relative or acquaintance who is a veteran" and"consider sitting down a recording what memories remain." There are far fewer memories how, some seven years later, as this generation leaves us. That makes the books by Mark Zuehlke and Tim Cook (who likely wrote without new interviews from veterans of that earlier war) more important than ever...Lest We Forget.

Another great book in the series..
By Linda Ewles
This is another outstanding read about Canadian efforts during the Italy campaign. All the books in this series explain the plan and the effects in a way that makes you extremly proud of the efforts of our young men, and the wonder of how anyone survied not only the defence by the German soldiers, but the plans of the officers calling the shots. What is really wonderful is, that as you are reading along all of a sudden you are reading about someone you know, like Sgt. Fred Cederberg, who was lucky to make it home and who also wrote a book about his time in hell.

The Secret Voyage of Sir Francis Drake, by Samuel Bawlf

In December 1577, a fleet of five small ships left Plymouth with Sir Francis Drake in command. By the time the expedition reached the Pacific Ocean only one remained - the Golden Hind. The adventures of Drake as he devastated Spanish treasure ships, charted unknown lands and became the first captain safely to circumnavigate the globe make this one of the most compelling of all human adventures, but Samual Bawlf adds more. He suggests that Drake had secret orders, which he fulfilled and which make him - 200 years before Cook - one of the greatest explorers the world has known.

From Publishers Weekly
Maritime historian Bawlf skillfully uncovers new information regarding Drake's circumnavigation of the globe, which began, amidst political and religious upheaval in Europe, in 1577. Until now, Drake's secret voyage-the exploration of the Pacific Northwest in hopes of finding the fabled Northwest Passage to eastern trade routes, and to establish a British colony in the New World-was hidden under a "cloak of secrecy" due to Drake's complicated relationship with Queen Elizabeth and England's precarious political situation with Spain. With braided historical, nautical, geographical and imagined narrative elements, Drake's voyage unfolds slowly at first, and at times lags under the weight of all Bawlf attempts to include. But once underway, it becomes an increasingly compelling tale, as Drake earns his reputation as "one of the greatest mariners that sail[ed] the seas, both as a navigator and as a commander," feared by his enemies for the "alarming scope of his [pirating] success." The account is thoroughly researched and carefully plotted, but Bawlf's true accomplishment is his humanization of historical icon Drake, a demanding, unyielding captain and ruthless sacker of Spanish ships and colonies, while at the same time a man who was deeply religious, who treated his captives with courtesy and was eager to establish strong bonds with the indigenous people he encountered along his journey. In the end, what resonates most is Drake's disappointment at being denied public ownership of his most important discoveries. This sympathetic, thorough treatment adds greater dimension to an already celebrated life. 60 b&w illus., 20 maps.

From Booklist
To solve a mystery about Drake's circumnavigation of the globe, Bawlf narrates the sea dog's voyage and plumbs maps and chronicles published in its immediate wake. Although Drake's trashing of Spanish galleons and towns in America was a lucrative boon and sensational propaganda for Elizabeth I in her sinuous maneuverings against Philip II, Drake's precise route through the Pacific was purposely obfuscated. The concealment annoyed cartographers such as Mercator, whose frustration Bawlf quotes, but energizes the author's scrutiny of maps. Reproduced profusely in this work, the charts show islets off the northwest coast of North America. Drake also vaguely recorded geographic landmarks in the region (e.g., "frozen land"). Bawlf melds these details into a conjecture that Drake poked the Golden Hinde around Vancouver Island and its labyrinthine waters. Mavens of maritime history will tingle at this kind of sleuthing, and they'll rollick as well in Bawlf's fluid retelling of Drake's drama-filled life at sea and court. Perhaps the Greatest Voyage in the History of Global Exploration - Hidden for over 400 years!
By RedDogRunning
This incredibly well researched book rocked my perception of Pacific Northwest discovery. I have been an avid reader of maritime history, particularly as it relates to the voyages of Captains Cook and Vancouver in the Pacific. Imagine my shock at discovering that their voyages pales in comparison to the “Secret Voyage of Sir Francis Drake” in 1577 – 1580.

The bombshell in this book was an amazing assembly of diverse hints and clues that place the reader on the Golden Hind as Drake explored the north coast of North America, including the Inside Passage to Alaska. All his discoveries above latitude 48 were suppressed, upon pain of death, by Queen Elizabeth I. Now, over 400 years after the voyage, Samuel Bawlf, through intense research, has properly brought this voyage to light as one of the greatest voyages in the history of global exploration.

It was not until 200 years after Drake’s incredible voyage that the world was given a clear view of Pacific Northwest geography. This events described in this book will keep you spellbound; chills of excitement will course through your veins at the events revealed here. The techniques used to determine longitude on the Oregon Coast are worth the read all by themselves.

This is a “must read” for any student of Pacific Northwest maritime history. A background of reading 16th century history will be a huge help here (especially with regard to Mary, Queen of Scots and Queen Elizabeth I).

An absorbing historical account, except for some slow spots
By Solipso
During the lives of Sir Francis Drake and Queen Elizabeth, England and Spain became bitter rivals and, much of the time, lethal enemies. So when Drake returned from his circumnavigation of the Earth, the English Crown kept some important information about his voyage secret. Drake's discoveries along the coasts of Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia might have revealed to Spain the Northwest Passage. And of course the English were not forthright about Drake's profitable raids.

Some of the pages are quickly turned, particularly those covering Drake's raids. Other parts are interesting too. I was pleased with Drake's encounters with natives, even the peaceful ones, and though they were not relevant to the book's title, I welcomed passages describing other explorers. I subtract a star in my rating because too many pages deal with the evolution of old maps. Those pages were slow, and one or two paragraphs would have sufficed. Geographical description of northwest America--bays, straits, passages, and whatnot--also became slow.

Bawlf lends verisimilitude to his account by presenting many quotations from the era. He also makes many footnotes, and he includes a bibliography and an index. His narration is highlighted by historical maps and drawings.

Sir Francis Drake is surrounded by many secrets and much inaccurate information, and down to the present day he is controversial. Which, in addition to history being somewhat artful and NOT exact, is reason enough for readers to approach this book as something less than holy gospel. Nevertheless, it is a good read.

A Great Historical Read
By Gold Canyon Gal
I enjoyed getting to know 'El Draco' and am amazed by all that I didn't know about his exploits and adventures...and all I didn't know of the extent of Spanish plunder in the Americans. I am left with the impression that, after having engaged in the slave trade somewhat, Sir Francis might have evolved into one of our earliest civil rights supporters. That's a bit of a stretch, I'm sure, but at least the beginning of a more humanist attitude towards the people who found themselves the unfortunate targets of the slave trade.

The concept of 'pedagogy' has become increasingly important as a frame of reference for debate about teaching and learning. In this book the authors analyze and explore contemporary ideas of pedagogy through the work of key figures including Freire, Montessori, and Vygotsky, and explain how a new conception of pedagogy could transform educational institutions, particularly schools.

6 stars
By Midwest Man
Okay, rave review. But there were still a couple hitches. I'll say 2 positives and a negative.

First, and this is why it got 5 stars: it is beyond comprehensive. I own several Palmistry volumes, and browsed maybe ten others. None of them are as complete and comprehensive; teeny lines other tomes miss or say nothing about, are mentioned here. So are nail condition, size, and all sorts of hand mark denotation, that I just haven't seen anywhere else. Specifically? It covers the major and minor lines, mounts (incl. hashamal), nails, hand shapes, finger shapes, combinations, colorations, marks, partial lines, friend lines, and more. I'm only half way through it at this moment, but it's so good I had to review it now!

Second: descriptions, descriptions, descriptions! Example after example, variance after variance. Beyond any other tome, especially over any simple-written "quick guide to palmistry". I actually feel cheated out of the money I spent on most of the other books I have on the subject.

Negatives: sometimes the pictures don't add up to the descriptions, and the organization of the descriptions feels almost haphazard; but that might seem like that just because it was clearly written by someone from a different culture. Of course, what we think of as "well-ordered" may seem to other cultures as "lifeless". But that's minor; I still am blown away.

Wow, wow, wow!

good reference, based on India culture.
By Jason Barr
palmistry can have different meanings to different cultures. i was looking for a more western palmistry system. however, this is a good reference book for those who want to learn this palmistry method associated with the myths and legends, of India and the surrounding countries. one method isn't any better than the other, it's just a matter of preference.

The tone of the writing is harshly judgmental and dogmatic.
By Christina C. Breault
The tone of the writing is harshly judgmental and dogmatic. The author seems unable to separate religious sentiments from a dispassionate explanation of palmistry meanings. I would hate to have my hands read by such a palmist as I would not expect any compassion for traits he describes as evil or unbecoming. This book is hard to be digested by non-religious readers and those with a sole interest in palmistry knowledge, detached from religious sentiments, will likely not enjoy this book. Nevertheless, the book provides a good amount of information on palmistry meanings within a cultural setting and sectary mind frame.

Complications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science, by Atul Gawande

A brilliant and courageous doctor reveals, in gripping accounts of true cases, the power and limits of modern medicine.

Sometimes in medicine the only way to know what is truly going on in a patient is to operate, to look inside with one's own eyes. This book is exploratory surgery on medicine itself, laying bare a science not in its idealized form but as it actually is -- complicated, perplexing, and profoundly human.

Atul Gawande offers an unflinching view from the scalpel's edge, where science is ambiguous, information is limited, the stakes are high, yet decisions must be made. In dramatic and revealing stories of patients and doctors, he explores how deadly mistakes occur and why good surgeons go bad. He also shows us what happens when medicine comes up against the inexplicable: an architect with incapacitating back pain for which there is no physical cause; a young woman with nausea that won't go away; a television newscaster whose blushing is so severe that she cannot do her job. Gawande offers a richly detailed portrait of the people and the science, even as he tackles the paradoxes and imperfections inherent in caring for human lives.

At once tough-minded and humane, Complications is a new kind of medical writing, nuanced and lucid, unafraid to confront the conflicts and uncertainties that lie at the heart of modern medicine, yet always alive to the possibilities of wisdom in this extraordinary endeavor.

Amazon.com Review
Gently dismantling the myth of medical infallibility, Dr. Atul Gawande's Complications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science is essential reading for anyone involved in medicine--on either end of the stethoscope. Medical professionals make mistakes, learn on the job, and improvise much of their technique and self-confidence. Gawande's tales are humane and passionate reminders that doctors are people, too. His prose is thoughtful and deeply engaging, shifting from sometimes painful stories of suffering patients (including his own child) to intriguing suggestions for improving medicine with the same care he expresses in the surgical theater. Some of his ideas will make health care providers nervous or even angry, but his disarming style, confessional tone, and thoughtful arguments should win over most readers. Complications is a book with heart and an excellent bedside manner, celebrating rather than berating doctors for being merely human. --Rob Lightner

From Publishers Weekly
Medicine reveals itself as a fascinatingly complex and "fundamentally human endeavor" in this distinguished debut essay collection by a surgical resident and staff writer for the New Yorker. Gawande, a former Rhodes scholar and Harvard Medical School graduate, illuminates "the moments in which medicine actually happens," and describes his profession as an "enterprise of constantly changing knowledge, uncertain information, fallible individuals, and at the same time lives on the line." Gawande's background in philosophy and ethics is evident throughout these pieces, which range from edgy accounts of medical traumas to sobering analyses of doctors' anxieties and burnout. With humor, sensitivity and critical intelligence, he explores the pros and cons of new technologies, including a controversial factory model for routine surgeries that delivers superior success rates while dramatically cutting costs. He also describes treatment of such challenging conditions as morbid obesity, chronic pain and necrotizing fasciitis the often-fatal condition caused by dreaded "flesh-eating bacteria" and probes the agonizing process by which physicians balance knowledge and intuition to make seemingly impossible decisions. What draws practitioners to this challenging profession, he concludes, is the promise of "the alterable moment the fragile but crystalline opportunity for one's know-how, ability or just gut instinct to change the course of another's life for the better." These exquisitely crafted essays, in which medical subjects segue into explorations of much larger themes, place Gawande among the best in the field. National author tour.

From The New England Journal of Medicine
Atul Gawande's voice has become familiar through the articles he has published in the New Yorker over the past several years. With these and other pieces collected in Complications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science, his varied interests and anecdotes cohere into a fascinating meditation on medicine as a human endeavor -- a meditation not only on the state of medicine today, with its controversies, jumps in knowledge and practice, and very real limitations, but also in some ways on the intrinsic complexities and paradoxes of the profession. Gawande writes about the whole enterprise of learning surgery -- and by extension, of learning any kind of medicine -- by practicing, in both senses, on human beings. And so the discussion extends from his own experience in learning how to put in a central line to the question of why and how repetition -- practice and more practice -- brings expertise and smoothness, and then beyond to the moral dilemma of teaching medicine to new learners: "This is the uncomfortable truth about teaching. By traditional ethics and public insistence (not to mention court rulings), a patient's right to the best care possible must trump the objective of training novices. We want perfection without practice. Yet everyone is harmed if no one is trained for the future. So learning is hidden, behind drapes and anesthesia and the elisions of language." After this introductory section about his own initiation into surgical technique, Gawande brings home the idea that everyone in medicine always needs to face questions of judgment, competence, and decision making. He looks at whether computers can read electrocardiograms more reliably than cardiologists and whether a team of nonsurgeons who perform only hernia operations, day in and day out, will do better by their patients than highly trained general surgeons. And then, inevitably, he takes on the issue of medical mistakes, both the error in judgment or technique by the otherwise reliable doctor and what happens to a doctor who makes mistake after mistake. He argues not only that uncertainty and some possibility of error come with the territory but also that many mistakes can be caught and prevented by applying lessons learned from other professions and other ways of thinking. But after all the discussion of how changing complex systems can reduce human error, Gawande, in telling the story of his own inability to obtain an airway in a trauma patient, is left with the truth that medicine remains a human endeavor, with responsibility and even blame to be assigned accordingly: "Good doctoring is all about making the most of the hand you're dealt, and I failed to do so. . . . Whatever the limits of the M&M [morbidity and mortality conference], its fierce ethic of personal responsibility for errors is a formidable virtue. No matter what measures are taken, doctors will sometimes falter, and it isn't reasonable to ask that we achieve perfection. What is reasonable is to ask that we never cease to aim for it." In his discussion of mysterious syndromes, of severe blushing, chronic pain, obesity, and nausea, Gawande confronts issues both at the limits of medical understanding and also, not coincidentally, at the intersection of mind and body. The sufferers he describes -- a woman who wants to be a TV anchorwoman but endures debilitating blushes, an architect with years of chronic back pain, a construction contractor who weighs 194 kg (428 lb) -- speak vividly through his clear and sympathetic writing, showing and telling how their lives have been damaged and circumscribed and even defined by these medical conditions. And yet there is always the nagging question of whether they are somehow "complicit" in their own destruction, whether the blushing problem is some compound of self-consciousness and vanity, whether the pain is "all in his head," whether the weight represents moral weakness. And in following some of these people through surgery -- an endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy to cure the blushing, a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass for the weight -- Gawande leads us to a fascinating surgical perspective. It is almost as if the more this surgeon becomes practiced and comfortable with the astonishing intimacies of surgical technique, with all possible invasions and manipulations of the human body, the more intrigued he becomes by the intricacies of the mind and the spirit and their power over the body and its progress, in sickness and in health. A beautifully written essay on autopsies includes an unforgettable image of a surgeon watching the much less gentle and elegant cutting done on the body after death: "Surgeons get used to the opening of bodies. . . . Nevertheless, I couldn't help wincing as she did her work: she was holding the scalpel like a pen, which forced her to cut slowly and jaggedly with the tip of the blade. Surgeons are taught to stand straight and parallel to their incision, hold the knife between the thumb and four fingers, like a violin bow, and draw the belly of the blade through the skin in a single, smooth slice to the exact depth desired. The assistant was practically sawing her way through my patient." The point of the essay is the necessity of autopsy and the high likelihood of discovering a different cause of death than had been assumed -- a misdiagnosis or complicating condition -- and by extension, the continuing presence of uncertainty even when decisions must be made and action taken and even though human beings cannot be completely understood by algorithm and experience. In the closing essay, Gawande confronts intuition -- what it is, how it works, and how it plays out in medical practice -- by taking us through the remarkable story of his "great improbable save," a 23-year-old woman who came in with what looked like a cellulitis of her leg and who turned out to have necrotizing fasciitis -- a diagnosis Gawande raised early in the course of her illness partly because he happened to have seen another case of it recently. When you are through with your initiation, when the systems work to support your practice, how do you finally make your decisions? When does inconsistency in how patients with the same problem are treated reflect problems in the system or bad doctoring, and when does it reflect tiny but real differences in human presentation or in instinct and choice on the part of well-trained experts and a willingness to live with the necessary degrees of fallibility, mystery, and uncertainty? Given the nature of the questions, of course, and the nature of the problems, there can be no resolution and no answers, but this book is a wonderful tribute to the complexity itself and to the intellectual, personal, and professional consequences of taking it on. Surgeons are people, too.
By John M. Vizcarra
I was referred to this book by a friend of mine who knew I liked the books of Malcolm Gladwell. I first read it near about when it came out, around 2002, and just got around to re-reading it. I had only remembered two of the stories from the book, so it was very similar to reading it again for the first time.

The theme of this book is reflected in its three parts: Fallibility, Mystery and Uncertainty. Each part talks about a particular aspect of Gawande’s career as a surgeon that deals with the less-certain side of being a doctor. Each concept is accompanied by one or more anecdotal references to his own real-life cases that illustrate his point brilliantly.

And that point is that doctors know a lot - but they don’t know everything. Their education and practical experience can help prepare them with knowledge, but skill comes from years of learned real-world practice. I could really sympathize with him and the stressors he has to deal with. I’ve been guilty as well of feeling my doctor must and should know everything that is right for me to do. The truth is a lot more complicated than that.

This book doesn’t even take into consideration the patient frustrations with healthcare - cost, attention, etc. It really does focus on pulling the screen back and giving you a glimpse into the vast uncertainty that accompanies this sometimes wondrous profession.

This is NOT a book that says, “I’m a surgeon. Here’s all the supercool things I’ve done and this is why I’m awesome and don’t you wish you could get me as your doctor?” This book shows the doctor, warts and all, and makes them much more human.

Medical Honesty
By Anne Burnik
The author writes from the viewpoint of a resident and young surgeon covering such topics as When Doctors Make Mistakes, When Good Doctors Go Bad, Pain, Nausea, Obesity and the Ethics involved in end-of-life decisions. His excellent writing makes the hospital setting and the O.R. come very much alive. Doctors are portrayed as human beings with a high fallibility factor and surgeons are portrayed with very high confidence levels. Yet the doubts, the anxiety and the frustrations of the medical profession are also expressed very eloquently. His insight into the medical world is almost profound and his empathy with the patient is palpable. Gawande has written other medical books for the popular market that have gotten good reviews. I hope to read them soon.

A great read! Unable to be put down until completed!
By Chris R.
As a former Navy Corpsman (Medic) attached to the USMC infantry, I have always had an interest in medicine, and science in general, and this book was a great insight into the medical and surgery field.

As a young Corpsman with the Marines, I was thrust into medicine, and learned very quickly what did and did not work. "Watch one, do one, teach one" is how we were instructed to learn medical practices. From diagnosing (even though we couldn't "diagnose" as Line Corpsmen...we still did essentially) cellulitis, learning to place sutures, to removing infected toenails, I made mistakes, but generally our medical skills quickly flourished, and we were able to practice outstanding medicine for the grunts.

Atul writes about this, and the decisions he had to make, which affect him to this day. As a surgeon and author, he actually cares about his patients, which is a great thing to have as a medical professional. While he doesn't touch on this very much in his book, his caring about the patients and following up is the mark of a true caregiver. For it is those doctors, medics, corpsmen, nurses, and other medical professionals that actually care and are empathic with their patients, yet know how to distance themselves when needed, that operate the best and can change medicine for the better.

A truly great read, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the healthcare system, surgery, medicine, and anyone who has ever worked in the medical field!

From Gradual to Alpine Mode
By M. R. Taylor
I played through the Hal Leonard Ukulele Method Book 1 (with the audio CD) by Little Rev this morning. The fact that I played through the entire book in one sitting might be a clue to you that this is not a book for intermediate to advanced players (I nevertheless feel rewarded by picking up a strumming technique that was new to me). That said, lets look at this from the perspective of a new player, the target for this book.

PROS:

*Covers the basic basics of how to hold the uke, right-hand positioning, tuning (with a track on the CD devoted to this), the staff, treble clef, note names, time signatures, measures, barlines, rhythmic values, etc. - all in 3 pages.

*Gives the basics of plucking melodies, introducing two or three notes at a time and giving tunes like Ode to Joy or Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star and Oh! Susanna to practice on. Very gradual - perfect for a first time player.

*Covers basic strums: brushing with the thumb, down and upstrokes with the forefinger.

*Introduces the common chord families of C, G, F, d minor and e minor.

*Like most of these kind of books, a one-page chord chart is included at the back.

CONS:

*Unfortunately, when you get to playing with chords on page 23, you are pretty much thrown to the wolves. Like many experienced players who go back and write an ukulele method, Little Rev forgets just how hard a G7 chord is to a first time player and makes it one of the first three chords he introduces.

*The common chord families (C, G and F) are not really the easiest chord sets to start learning with; this method gives them to you and then expects you to make the transitions between those chords fairly quickly. Sink or swim, baby!

*The author gives the more difficult version of the e minor chord. While I can think of a couple of reasons why this chord may be preferable in the long run (doubles the fifth and offers a pivot to B7), it is one tough chord and is not level appropriate for an introductory method.

GOOD, but NEEDS IMPROVEMENT:

*Covers a couple of more advanced strums that will give your playing more rhythmic interest. It is hard to describe techniques like these on paper, but between the description and listening to the CD you may be able to figure them out.

*The strum that was new to me was one he called the 'Finger and Thumb Strum' - a type of finger/thumb combination strum involving the sixteenth note before the third beat being played by a downstroke of the forefinger, followed up by a downstroke of the thumb on the third beat. I figured this out, but as someone who reads music notation, I would have preferred a more precise writing out of the rhythm involved. Good strum though.

*The CD is adequate, but many of the tracks launch into the song without counting off first, which is annoying. Authors of these kinds of products should remember to ALWAYS count off.

Overall, I think this is an excellent introduction to melodic picking, but a less than stellar introduction to chord playing, with some good strum instruction if you can figure it out. New ukers will find the learning curve start out gradual and then jump into 'alpine mode' when it gets into chords. If you're willing to be really patient and put in some hours on the chords to get up to speed on the songs in this book, great. I, however, think a more gradual approach to chord playing will be more rewarding to the learner in the short and long term - allowing players to build muscle memory and finger callouses over time.

Good for a Sitting
By TurtleTurtleTurtle
I wanted a more structured approach to learning ukulele that just using Youtube and ukulele forums. However, this book was not the way to do it. The songs it introduces are incredibly simple, so simple that I finished the entire book in an afternoon. If you need a bare bones introduction to music reading, this book could help you out. Otherwise, stick to online lessons like Ukulele Underground or pick up a Mel Bay book.

One of the finest ukulele tutorials in the market
By Brian K. Miller
This is one of the finest ukulele tutorials in the market. I have no rhythm and I'm tone deaf. Learning music, even on the delightful and charming ukulele, is a chore for me unlike anything most people can imagine. This is one of two books I constantly fall back on to refresh my most fundamental skills, to remind myself the differences between minor and major scales, to guide my clumsy fingers as I strum chords, pluck melodies, or just play around with different combinations of sounds. I cannot count the number of "learn to play the ukulele" books in my library, but this is one of two that I replace every time the covers tear, the pages get ruined by spilled coffee, or my current copy gets lost.

Everything the beginner needs is here, presented in a smooth, natural progression from the very first notes to complex strum patterns interlaced with a variety of flourishes and melodies.
