After joining the staff of the Burgholzli Mental Hospital in 1900, Jung developed and applied the word association tests for studying normal and abnormal psychology. Between 1904 and 1907 he published nine studies on the association experiments, of which six were brought together, with articles by other researchers, in a collection later published in English as Studies In Word-Association (1918). The present volume consists of the original nine studies together with tow lectures on the association method that Jung gave in 1909 when, with Freud, he was invited to Clark University, Worcester, Massachusetts, and three articles on psychophysical researches.

Issu d'une famille protestante, Carl Gustav Jung etudie au college de Bale et s'interesse de pres a l'Histoire et a la mythologie. Poursuivant des etudes de medecine, il s'oriente vers la psychanalyse. En 1900, il devient assistant a l'hopital psychiatrique de Zurich. Presente a Freud en 1907, il est rapidement considere par ce dernier comme son successeur. Toutefois, les differences s'accumulent. Jung s'oppose effectivement a l'interpretation sexuelle du medecin viennois. Ainsi, la rupture se consomme en 1912. Jung entreprend ensuite de multiples voyages ethnographiques, au Kenya et en Inde notamment, qui lui permettent de mieux formaliser sa pensee. En 1921, il expose dans "Les types psychologiques" un inconscient defini par les pensees, les sensations, l'intuition et les sentiments et divise entre extraversion et introversion. Avec "L' energie psychique", il soumet l'hypothese de l'existence de deux formes d'inconscient, celui personnel et celui collectif, memoire de l'humanite vehiculant les grands archetypes mythologiques. Il devient le fondateur de la psychologie analytique.

Born in 1875, C. G. Jung was a Swiss psychiatrist and innovative thinker whose most influential ideas include the concept of psychological archetypes, the collective unconscious, and synchronicity. He is the author of numerous works, including Memories, Dreams, Reflections and Man and His Symbols. He died in 1961.

Fordham was an international figure in the history of analysis.

Sir Herbert Edward Read, DSO, MC (1893-1968) was an English anarchist poet, and critic of literature and art. He was one of the earliest English writers to take notice of existentialism, and was strongly influenced by proto-existentialist thinker Max Stirner.

JUNG'S "STUDIES IN WORD ASSOCIATION," AND RELATED ARTICLES/LECTURES

Jung published nine articles (between 1904-1907) on his word association experiments at a mental hospital, which are collected in this volume, as well as two lectures and three other articles.

Here are some representative quotations from the book:

"Finally, it may be permissible to point out once more that an overwhelming number of the complexes we have discovered in our subjects are erotic. In view of the great part played by love and sexuality in human life, this is not surprising."
"The art of the method, which is never easy to use, lies in distinguishing the reactions connected with a complex from the irrelevant ones. I have therefore compiled a series of so-called 'complex characteristics.' In principle the complex-characteristics are the same for normal and pathological associations. Furthermore, to lay bare the complex is of far-reaching significance in applying our experiments to the field of criminal psychology."
"Anyone inexperienced in the field of pathological association psychology will probably shake his head at the above suppositions; he will perhaps see in them not just hypotheses but sheer phantasms. The judgment on them will perhaps be the same as on Freud's The Interpretation of Dreams: The Complete and Definitive Text."

Important early scientific research--context for later

Throughout his works Jung repeatedly says he is a scientist, his findings are empirically based, & therapy must center on the individual client rather than upon theory. This volume (in addition to CW1) supports these contentions by describing the many experiments Jung conducted. Contemporary "post-Jungians," might take this volume as a failed attempt, but I do not. Jung's view was more a balance of nature (biology, genetics, etc.) AND nurture (environment, learning, etc.). Jung helped evolve psychology towards becoming a science--vs. the psychology of ignorance he inherited. This is a VERY important work (though perhaps a bit boring to many readers) which modern readers are advised to peruse to understand the context within which Jung worked, explored, & experimented. Per modern Knowledge Management, knowledge (vs. data or information) requires context to be actionable. In addition, this work has some interesting quotes such as: p. 245 "All our thinking and acting, the vast bulk of which appears to us to be conscious, actually consist of all those bits that are finely determined by innumerable impulses completely outside consciousness. To our ego-consciousness the association process seems to be its own work, subject to its judgment, free will, and concentration; in reality, however, as our experiment beautifully shows, ego-consciousness is merely the marionette that dances on the stage, moved by a concealed mechanism. (note 39) From this we can also gather that those who equate psyche with consciousness actually take part en pro toto;" p. 444 "no psychic occurrence is a thing in and by itself but rather the resultant of the entire psychological past;" & p. 444 "Words are really a kind of shorthand version of actions, situations, and things...the linguistic surrogate for reality; at the same time we must not forget what the stimulus-word will almost without exception conjure up its corresponding situation."

Historically interesting--the famous word association test is mentioned here--but Jung is at his worst when trying to squeeze psyche into a causal framework. Early in his career, however, that was how it was done, and he broke out of it later while Freud did not.

Got my mojo working

What the author did with this book was to take the origins of blues, jazz, country, and rock 'n' roll and demonstrate how they all originated from the same triangular patch of land he calls the Mojo Triangle. It is amazing when you think about it. All that great music coming from the same area. The author interviewed many of the artists, producers and songwriters who shaped the music into art. I read the earlier review and can't imagine what the reviewer is referring to. I purchased my copy at a bookstore and the covers match and I didn't see any errors. He must have got hold of an early proof from a used book dealer. This book rocks!

Not quite what you'd expect...

It's an okay photo reference, with a lot of pictures that provide a whole variety of moods, poses, and expressions - some clashing in theme from one page to the next... I guess the best way to describe it is chaos in a photo-literary work.
I gave it 3 stars as it was not all-in-all bad, but it was not quite as I expected, and not quite useful if you purchased it for the same reason I did (drawing study reference). However, there is enough material in this book that you could use it as such - I would just recommend you purchase the Paperback Edition, as the Library Binding one is Overkill (as I found out)...

Interesting, but a little........much

The idea that images of pregnant women are missing from the mainstream media is an interesting one. Unfortunately, this book hashes this notion out in the most dense, uninteresting prose imaginable.
And the illustrations are of pregnant women in various forms of undress, in shocking positions and situations, and looking none-too-appealing.
An idea that could have been confined to an article. And could have been done with photos that were just a little less revolting.

The story of people and the story of Cuba

This gem of a first novel, written in 1992, by Christina Garcia is the story of Cuba as well as the story of a few unforgettable Cuban women. The words themselves have a lyrical quality as the the tale evolves through their different voices.
Set in the 1970's, Celia del Pino, in her 60s, is a loyal Cuban patriot, who lives by the sea. Her daughter, Lourdes, has fled to America and owns a bakery in Brooklyn. The other daughter, Felicia, still in Cuba, shows signs of mental unbalance and dabbles in Santeria. Her granddaughter, Pilar, a rebellious teenager, has been raised in America but feels a deep connection with her grandmother in Cuba.
There's a dreamlike quality to the book and a touch of the mystical as each character is deeply developed and the story evolves through their inner memories. Strong characterization is the author's strength as well as the way she weaves the stories of each of them together. They've all been effected by the revolution and it shapes the form of this book.
Not only did reading this book introduce me to its interesting characters, it also taught me more about the Cuban revolution than I ever learned from just reading the newspapers. And it piqued my interest in wanting to know more.

Lyrical Madness

Here is a truly unforgettable book. I was entranced from the very first sentence: "Celia del Pino, equipped with binoculars and wearing her best housedress and drop pearl earrings, sits in her wicker swing guarding the north coast of Cuba."
From that moment on, I was drawn as surely into this book as the tides in the sea that Celia is guarding. "Dreaming in Cuban" tells the story of the Cuban Revolution from the point of view of three generations of women: the above-mentioned Celia, the grandmother; her daughters, Felicia and Lourdes; and Lourdes' own daughter, Pilar. Each of the three older women, and perhaps Pilar, a 20-ish New York artist, is quite totally mad. Thus we see and hear and feel the revolution from the hallucinatory perceptions of Celia, who worships El Lider (Castro) with ferocity; Felicia, who is torn between old Cuba--its superstitions, its voodoo, its passion--and the modern Cuba, where she is sentenced to a work camp; and Lourdes, who has escaped to Brooklyn and proudly owns the Yankee Doodle Bakery.
There is violence, murder, passion, birth and death in this book, but all told in a sort of lyrical mist, so that the reader feels the torpid heat of the Cuban day, the gentle warmth of the sea, and the breezes that stir the palms. All is dreamlike, which makes the reality of modern Cuba almost impossible to grasp. As one of the main characters says toward the end of the book: "Cuba is a peculiar exile...an island-colony. We can reach it by a thirty-minute charter flight from Miami, yet never reach it at all."
And yet, after reading this incredible book, I feel for the first time that I have some understanding of that small island nation. Or maybe it is all a dream.

Dreaming in Cuban

I have to read this book for school, which automatically sounds a warning bell in my head: boring. So, as I sat at work with boredom threatening to force me to abandon all sanity, I sighed and picked up the book. From the very first sentence, I was hooked. Perhaps it wasn't only the plot that kept my attention focused, but also the fabulous writing style of the author. I didn't just read about Cuba, I felt Cuba. I didn't just read about the characters, I understood them. I ached for them. I pitied Pilar, whose mother reads her diary and punishes the young teenager for her emerging sense of sexuality. I pitied the twins, who faced a father's abuse and a mother's dwindling sanity with their stubborn, resilient silence. Cuban and United States relationships fall into the background amidst a story that could show up anywhere. The caring, but somewhat troubled grandmother, her rebellious daughter who's raising her own hellion, her troubled daughter who's twin daughters and young son have seen too much of the world... There is a certain sadness that follows these people struggling to go through the motions of love and family, held together by the ties of mother to child, forced apart by misunderstanding and uncertainty.
