The author also designs and markets alcoholism and substance abuse home study courses for chemical dependency counselors throughout the US and Canada. Fleeman's courses have been approved by the Navy for use by Navy and Marine Corp chemical dependency counselors at bases throughout the world. He lives in Cassadaga, New York.

Author John Vlissides is a member of the so-called Gang of Four: writers of the bestselling and influential Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software, a catalog of 23 design patterns. This more recent book delivers considerable insight on using and applying software design patterns--reusable designs for common programming problems--and compiles the author's further experience with patterns.

Pattern Hatching first defends the patterns movement by offering 10 myths about patterns, which provide a framework for thinking about the role of patterns in today's software. A Necessary Book

This slender volume should be required reading for anyone working on an object oriented system (and if you're using C++, you ought to read it three or four times). This book won't so much tell you how to solve particular problems as much as it will help to develop a way of thinking about programming problems that leads to well-design solutions.
The GoF book's second chapter example is unfortunate: virtually every programmer I've recommended Design Patterns to has expressed frustration over the inaccessibility of the primary example of applying patterns in a system.
The file system example in Vlissides, on the other hand, is a lucid and enaging narrative that everyone relates to and seems to gain immediate insight from. I now recommend this book as a requirement for really understanding the GoF book. It's worth the price many times over.

Patterns Demystified

GoF presents everything you need to start with patterns. This one tells how to identify a pattern when it's cooking. It explains in actuality what patterns can and cannot do, what patterns are and are not, how does a pattern come to existence and stuff related to the concept of patterns and not a list of patterns as in GoF.
GoF is if you need to dive into patterns. This one if you need to swim in patterns. Don't expect a list of patterns as in GoF. This is more on how to identify a pattern, how to chose among a set of patterns, when to use, when to invent and etc.
This book will serve best after the pattern hype has washed over you atleast once.

A great follow up to the GoF design patterns book.

This is superb book. I felt it was easy to understand, of course I had already read the GoF book. It has a complete chapter filled with a great case study. It walks your through designing a UNIX style file system. There is nothing bad to say about this book, I recommend it to anyone who wants more after reading the original Design Patterns.

If you are a wargamer or history buff this is a must for you.

Fred Ray has done it again - a second book on ancient historical warfare, analysis and troop details you could only dream to acquire. For a model wargamer / PC wargamer of ancients this is a must-have book. Spanning the famous battles of Macedon's rise through Philip II and then its expansion through his son Alexander the Great, the book also covers the Succssor Wars up to 300 BC and many minor engagements just right for gaming / re-enactment. Fred Ray follows his successful formula of battle analysis first developed in his book 'Greek Land Battles of the 5th Century' with another book now on the 4th Century covering in detail 187 engagements. For a wargamer this is a dream book with all your troop details for both sides neatly summarised plus an historical perspective and insights in to the role of much heard of troops like the Hypaspists.

OK Beginner Puzzle Book.

You get 100 puzzles with solutions in the back of the book. Puzzles are from recent (2000-2003) named tournament games. Puzzles 1-29 are easy Mate in 1. Most of the rest are Mate in 2 moves, some easy, some slightly harder. This is a beginner puzzle book which requires only basic chess knowledge. I found 1 error in solution # 45; otherwise this book is well done. I think the only issue I have with this book is there is only one puzzle per page. It could have easily been at least 2 per page for a better value.

A nice book, But it could be better.
First off there are some problems in the book marked "look for 2 ways or look for 3 ways" and you'll find 3 or even 4 ways and there not listed, You'll even find 2 or 3 answers on puzzels that should have only one.
Second, Every puzzle starts with white to move, Lets change it up a little, How about Black to move, Mate in two.
That being said I did enjoy this book, Some puzzles were just too easy and some stumped me for a time.
This book is written for beginners and I would recomend it to such, If not for the errors I would have given this book 4 stars.

This study guide is perfect for the average student. It is slim in design which makes it easy to take on the go anywhere. The beginning of the book gives test taking tips and the buyer is also offered a DVD set of tips via email response. Each chapter is followed by Q&A so one doesn't struggle to get the correct answers. It does not just give you the correct A-B-C answer but a small paragraph explaining why that answer is correct.
