Agesilaus, king of Sparta, being asked what things he thought most proper for boys to learn, replied: "Those things which they should practice when they become men." His reply was in perfect harmony with the good judgment of mankind, and cannot fail to be appreciated by all who have good common sense. If Agesilaus lived at the present time, the question would most probably have included both boys and girls, and undoubtedly his reply would be so worded as to apply to men and women.

Mankind, especially of the United States, has two great duties. First, that of self-support and education. Second, that of governmental support and national enlightenment. While I have thus divided man's responsibility in two parts, it might not be improper to obliviate the dividing line and say that man's duties are all under one comprehensive head viz.: "Mankind's duty is to man," However, in the preparation of this volume the dividing line is recognized and two general departments are presented; that of domestic or household economy, and national or political economy. The former department is a compilation of useful household formulas so arranged and worded as to form a neat and concise household receipt book. Frequent reference to its pages will impart such information as will enable the reader to save money and at the same time enjoy life.

Department number two treats on social questions that are now knocking at humanity's intellectual threshold for admission and solution.

Records show that less than one-thirtieth part of the time of man in general is consumed in productive pursuits, yet some people toil diligently three-fifths of their time and receive only a scanty living. To assist in making clear the road to private and national prosperity is therefore the motive which actuates me in the publication of this book.

A Strange 19th Century Everything Book

For connoisseurs of this kind of book, it's kind of fun. One chapter deals with homemade remedies (including a cure for cancer -- at the time an open lesion) -- another has recipes for homemade candy -- another plagiarizes the most complicated memory system ever developed. And then there's hog cholera. Lots of pages on hog cholera. And testimonials regarding the efficacy of the book's cure for hog cholera. Plus, learn to cure various chicken ailments through bleeding.

I used to look for books like this in second-hand stores. They are kind of fun and you'll never know what kind of dangerous concoction you'll learn to make. This book has several methods for making your hair silky using a form of lead. But the title, though original, is a bit misleading. I downloaded it while going through various free ebooks on prosperity and abundance. So caveat emptor. You may find it delightful, just know what it is as you're getting it.

I was introduced to this book while serving in the PA National Guard. It was used extensively in the Guard. I purchased a copy to use in my government job and the state's child welfare training program. Scholtes, et al. provide clear step by step instruction and useful tools for teaming, quality control, and project management.

Excellent, realistic work methods that are easily applicable

Joiner Associates Inc. have really come up with a clear structured methodology to make developing and working in teams fun and productive. Scholtes presents the material in a "how to" format which not only is easy to read but very applicable. I have used this methodology when I was working in the USA in 1990 and have been very compfortable in applying it in my home country ( Jordan )since 1991. The beauty of the approach is that it is transcultural and does not emphasize an aspect which is more easily applicable in one place over the other. the methodology is clear, well presented and is a no nonsense direct view of what many other people could have easily made very compicated. I have also been a strong follower of the Deming methodology and to see both team building details and the Deming ideas meshed together is a dream come true. A five star rating is more than well deserved.

If you are a manager, you need to read this book

I wish I had read this book 11 years ago when I started managing. Very applicable and extremely useful for the real world meetings that are required. I would highly recommend this book to any manager or leader that would like to make their team meetings more effective.

Insightful chess & biography

I buy a lot of chess books, but my favorites are always the auto-biographies. The book is around 250 pages, half devoted to the 41 annotated games, the other half (120 pages!) of pure biography.

The games section is organized by type of game: some favorites, a few against World Champions, a few where Tal-like sacrifices lead to tactical attacks, some opening innovations, and some endgames.

Being a 1.d4 player, I was familiar with Tukmakov's contributions to opening theory, especially in the QGD. I was pleased to find in this book, however, that he was a Catalan specialist as well (he reports a never-lost record of 9-1-0, the draw is in the book where he had an obvious winning position and just went to sleep.. so call it 10-0-0 with the Catalan).

In all games, I was impressed with Tukmakov's style of play. Seemingly simple moves to prepare a single square (outpost) turn into somewhat mechanical wins, once the tactics are calc'd correctly, of course! But then, many opening lines blown apart with piece sacrifices, forcing the opponent on long routes to hold on. A perfect blend of positional and tactical play! And analysis never too lengthy as he gives the moves to reach his evaluation, and let's you figure the rest out (good for your own study!).

On the down side, there were quite a few misprints (typos, or originating with the author?) of moves, making one wonder how much was entered or checked by computer. Always annoying.

The biographical section is just as interesting as his games. A life growing up in Soviet times, with the broken families it caused, combined with the psychological problems he experienced were told from a varying first-person, third-person reference. This is a bit confusing, but the third-person paragraphs were often told as stories, as if written as a novel. So the technique of changing views keeps the pure biographical first-person separate from the longing/personal third-person voice.

Overall, this book is pure chess entertainment, but weighs heavily with the useful... both in history and chess.
The biographical section gives insight into the Soviet world outside of chess, as well as pictures of the lives of the major Soviet chessplayers-- even non-chessplayers will enjoy this half. The games section will surely improve the player who devotes some time to their study.

Tukamakov gives a deeply personal and heart-felt examination of his career; His annotations are enlightening how a grandmaster prepared before the event of computer engines and databases. This is a book that will appeal to many different kinds of chess players, but especially for anyone who loves the game as a 'profession', and wants to use it as a guide to improve.

I believe adults (or, you know, those of us who are attempting to be adults) deserve the same kind of humor, compassion, and guidance that we offer to children in the form of picture books.
When I was first out of college and fresh into the NYC dating scene, I often felt bewildered. I very much wanted to meet my match, and each time I encountered a potential mate, my mind insistently wanted to know: "Are you my boyfriend?"
Approximately 99% of the time, the answer was "no." And while rejection and loneliness are not exactly funny topics, I found there was still plenty to laugh about. Years after the initial idea, I finally got around to writing #AYMBF, and I was fortunate to be paired with an illustrator who perfectly understood the concept and the parody homage to Are You My Mother?
I'm so happy that #AYMBF is now available far and wide, and I'm proud to offer some lighthearted hope and humor to a subject that can sometimes feel heavy. I hope you enjoy this book, and that it finds its way into the hands of anyone who could use a little pick-me-up when it comes to love!

This is one of the cutest adult picture books I've ever read! Only sixty-four pages long, it's a parody of Are You My Mother?. Being a singleton is hard, especially when it seems like everyone in your circle is happily paired off. Although the protagonist has a good sense of self-worth and is financially independent, she has no boyfriend, and thus begins her search for him.

The illustrations are adorable, and I loved Bryza's play on words. After finishing it, I immediately turned to page one and started it again looking for clues. The Kindle edition is on sale for $2.99 today. What a steal!

This book "The Master's Touch" truly gives you an inside look into the mind of Yogi Bhajan. It will have you thinking and pondering questions about life for days. Questions about how Western society lives its life compared to Eastern society and all the mysteries of life. This book is a must have for any Kundalini Yoga teacher. Most teacher training courses include this as part of their programs, but in case yours doesn't, pick up a copy of this book. You may even save on the cost of your program if you order this ahead. Hmmm? What can I say about this book? DO NOT buy it!
It's simply junk. The design stinks. The best photos are on the cover.
The content just has to be the worst writings on strength I've EVER had the misfortune to have bought & read. I feel like a sucker for buying it.
I write this little review to help others who seek real knowledge about
bodybuilding history to go elsewhere. This book is a real stinker! If the name Dave Yarnell is on the cover it means you've been had. What a piece of trash. This guy is a fraud and a full of bull. DO NOT BUY!

If you enjoy old time weightlifting you may like this

This book was bought for my dad who is in his 70's and who has followed the old time weightlifters most of his life. Looking at the cover I thought it would be like a scrapbook. Although it's not he thoughly enjoys it because it has bits of history/trivia about the oldtimers. Be sure to take advantage of looking inside so your not disappointed like some of the reviewers were. What you see there is what you get throughout the book.
