About the Author

Sandra P. Rosenblum has lectured widely on performance practices at universities, schools of music, and both national and international conferences. The author of numerous journal articles and of editions of sonatas by Scarlatti and Clementi, Ms. Rosenblum holds degrees from Wellesley College and Harvard University. She has been the recipient of fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies and the Radcliffe Institute. Her present research is on the music of Chopin.

About the Author
Ian Greener is a Professor in the School of Applied Social Sciences at Durham University where he leads the provision of research methods teaching on ESRC-accredited courses. Prior to this he worked for a number of UK Higher Education Universities including Manchester and York in Business Schools and Social Science Departments. His main research interest is trying to keep up with the hectic pace of public sector reform both in the UK and internationally, using a range of qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods research strategies to examine continuity and change in public services, and which has led to books on the history of the NHS and public management, and over fifty articles published in a range of international peer-reviewed journals.

Ian lives in York where he spends his time trying to stop his children, Bethany, Emily and Anna, from spending what remains of his money, and walking a spaniel his wife insists he must grow to like. He likes good red wine, Strictly Come Dancing, and computers that work.

Born in Florence, Andrea studied geography at the local university. I LOVE TONY!!!

I highly recommend reading Can't Get Enough before reading this fast, sexy read. Tony Dunn and Nicole Hodges have been together for about seven months and they are a family with Tony's daughter, Brianna. She's usually going out the door as he's getting home, due to their work schedules. They have a weekend getaway planned for Chicago, but Nicole is told she has to stay and work because Jenn called in sick. Needless to say, it's all part of Tony's surprise. Nicole has been fearing that Tony is going to get tired of her, since they don't have much time together. Boy, is she WRONG!! I recommend this fast read to everyone so you can catch up and find out what all Tony has planned for the love of his life!! I flove Tony!!

Left me first say I Love Molly McLains books..

In Always Enough Tony Dunn is trying to do is best. What's a single father to do? He'll do whatever it takes to provide for her.

Nicole Hodges comes to River Bend for one reason only and that's to clear some things up with her grandmas estate..until she meets Tony Dunn and his daughter.

When Tony is desperate for someone to watch his daughter he finds himself asking Nicole. How that happens he doesn't know, but it happens. The more time they spend together something sparks. Even his daughter likes her.

Just loved this book.Steamy to say the least more importantly was a deep connection, a family connection of sorts. So I highly recommend this book as well as the others in River Bend..

A sweet and sexy check-in with my favourite couple!

This is a short sexy story starring Tony and Nicole from Can't Get Enough (River Bend #2). They are already a firmly established couple but life has gotten in the way, and they hardly get any time together. In this story they finally get a chance to reconnect as lovers. I really enjoyed seeing them again, the challenges they face as a married couple will be familiar to those readers with children and careers who've gotten stuck in a rut. They still have chemistry together and we get a sexy scene between them. It was great to visit them again, and a good reminder of how lovely this series is!

It took me two years to write this book. The first year I spent writing the book 1 wanted to write, and the second year I spent writing the book my reviewers wanted to adopt. As anyone who has authored a text knows, writing is an arduous task, painful at times. A textbook cannot be written without some compromises, making decisions about what to include and what to omit. In this text I aimed to cover the classic paradigms and standard issues, but I also wanted to include more than these. I wanted to broaden the scope of psycholinguistics to include more research on the emotional and cultural aspects of language. I wanted to pay closer attention to the idiosyncratic nature of our personal linguistic practices. I wanted to recognize each of us situated in our unique speech communities with our own emotional attachments to words and their meanings. I wanted to pay homage to the foundational studies in psycholinguistics but at the same time invigorate a new generation of students of language with exciting and cutting-edge research. After the second round of revisions, I think I can offer you this text. I breathed a sigh of relief when it became clear from the final round of reviews that students would not find this book boring; in fact, they would probably engage many of the topics very enthusiastically.

By the time I started working on The Psychology of Language, I had spent twenty-five years studying emotional language, offensive language, taboo language, and cultural influences on speech. I have become quite familiar with the process of asking questions about little-studied areas of human communication. As I started outlining this textbook, it was clear that most of the emotional aspects of speech I studied had remained outside of the mainstream of psycholinguistic research. It always bothered me to open new textbooks on language acquisition and see no mention of the fact that children readily acquire and use taboo speech. All of us who have raised children know how disturbing, humorous, frustrating, and problematic this aspect of language development can be. It also bothers me to look in the index of important books like Gernsbacher's Handbook of Psycholinguistics (1994) or Elman et al.'s Rethinking Innateness (1996) and not find an entry for "emotion." Can this be right? Can we really construct a theory of language, develop a way of studying language, without addressing topics like emotion and culture? Can we really understand language acquisition by ignoring its cultural and emotional contexts? I don't think so, and that is one of the reasons why I wrote this book—to include emotion and culture in the outline of traditional language phenomena. In the end, the book aims to offer something familiar to language scholars and something new to both scholars and students.

Part One is designed to parallel other texts in psycholinguistics with respect to scope and outline. The material is similar to that covered in other books, but much of it is unique. Chapter 1 uses traditional material to set the stage for the rest of the text: What is language? Do animals have language? What is the history of psycholinguistics? And so on. Chapter 2 examines the neurological basis for language. It is positioned early in the text to establish the importance of neuroscience in language studies and to introduce the role of emotion in language into the neuroscience literature. Some instructors may not be comfortable with this early emphasis on neuroscience at first glance; however, neuroscience is becoming more prominent in psychology textbooks, and our students must be properly prepared. Chapter 3 takes a fairly traditional journey through the speech perception literature, with one exception: It covers theories of speech perception that are currently motivating research questions rather than outlining all of the models that have emerged historically. Chapter 4 is a long chapter on words and word recognition. The first part covers traditional material on the nature of reference, semantic meaning, and the organization of the mental lexicon. The second part concentrates on recent research on the topic of lexical access. I have included the connectionist theory (Seidenberg & McClelland, 1989), which has been gaining increasing attention in recent years. Since this is a long chapter, some instructors may wish to cover the material in Chapter 4 as two separate topics. Chapter 5 is dedicated to the topic of sentence processing. It is filled with many examples of parsing problems and the sentence processing models that have been developed to account for parsing research phenomena. I have also addressed the issues of individual differences in processing, emotional involvement, and working memory constraints. Chapter 6 covers speech production and uses errors in the production process to suggest the stages of production. This approach is fairly traditional. I have included research on Freudian slips, which has often been avoided, I suggest, because there is no adequate theory to explain them. Another unique feature of this chapter is the inclusion of speech production models that incorporate gestures. Chapter 7 is dedicated to writing and reading processes. I have developed material on the process of writing and the stages of writing that are not generally detailed in psycholinguistics textbooks as they are here. I am convinced that basic and applied research on the writing process will become more important in the future. Writing research needs more thorough attention from students of language and classroom instruction to make progress in this area. The reading section covers research on deaf reading, reading tongue twisters, and Chinese reading processes. I included a connectionist model of reading with traditional models. These first seven chapters are meant to cover the traditional material and lay the foundation for the rest of the text.

Part Two extends beyond traditional topics to include important research on the emotional and social aspects of language use. Chapter 8 addresses the topic of discourse in conversations and narratives. I have drawn on a lot of material from Gernsbacher's influential Handbook (1994) and the work of H. Clark (1996) on conversation. What will be new for many readers here is the material on storytelling, joking, and humor. Chapter 9 provides extensive and up-to-date coverage of figurative speech, including metaphors, irony, idioms, and name-calling. Chapter 10 is the first of two chapters on language development. It concentrates on phonological, lexical, and grammatical development. Chapter 11 is probably the most controversial chapter, covering the topics of emergence, emotion, and embodiment. I look back at the literature demonstrating how a word's affective components are classically conditioned. I look forward to cutting-edge research on less well known concepts such as emergence and embodiment of language because they are helpful in understanding the emotional and cultural aspects of language acquisition. Chapter 12 examines the nature of language and thought, linguistic relativity, bilingualism, and categorical language. Readers will find the material on slang, sex talk, taboo words, and language standards both informative and provocative. Chapter 13 covers what I call applied psycholinguistics—the application of psycholinguistic research to everyday problems and settings. These contexts include classroom instruction, law, forensic linguistics, doctor-patient dialogues, mass communication, and human factors (ergonomics).

The pedagogical features of each chapter are similar to those employed in other textbooks. Each chapter opens with a set of critical thinking questions. These are meant to stimulate inquiry into what lies ahead and to expose the content and structure of the chapter. Students probably will not use these questions unless the instructor develops their pedagogical or functional utility. For example, I use these kinds of questions in review sessions prior to examinations. The content of each chapter is meant to expose central issues on the topic and the experimental methods designed to address those issues. Each chapter contains exercises designed to stimulate interest in the topic at hand. There are also throughout each chapter a number of boxed features in the form of discussion questions, special topics, and review questions. These boxed materials are designed as points of departure that push the reader to integrate the material in the box with text material. Like the critical thinking questions, instructors have to make the material in boxed sections prominent in classroom discussion to persuade students to use and think about them. Each chapter ends with a list of recommended Web sites.

Crystal-clean and -clear in language,style,and therefore comprehensibility plus broad in coverage,the book is the most reader-friendly of all the textbooks on psycholinguistics I have read through.It is traditional in addressing the topics of language production,comprehension,and acquisition in the first part.In the second part,however,it branches into what the author calls the applied psycholinguistics,dealing with emotinonal,social,and cultural aspects of the subject matter and may be integrated into language communication,social linguistics,pragmatics,cultural studies,language of folklore,among others,but all from a psychological perspective.In this sense it is non-traditional.Anyone interested in psycholinguistics but without any background knowledge in either linguistics or psychology may start with the book.

books smells like dead rat horrible smell don't buy

Received my package the next day that was the best thing about it but I didn't need it till July 5th so it was good that I got it in advance for class but the bad thing and the worst thing that I hate was when I opened the package yesterday it smelled like dead it smells so bad I was so embarrassed in class everytime I flip the page or just hit you in your face

Definitely recommend purchasing this book in the 2 book volume set... I have friends who purchased it as just the single book with both volumes in one and it is super heavy to carry around. Breaks everything down and really prepares you for nursing exams!

Excellent PB7 reference for developers of all skill levels

This is an excellent resource for Powerbuilder developers. Though the title indicates that it's for advanced users, I think that any developer will find this book to be quite useful... so don't let the word "advanced" intimidate you (the first part of the book covers the basics, if you need a review). On the other hand, those developers who have been using powerbuilder since the days of the dinosaur will get a lot out of this book. The author covers several advanced development issues that aren't discussed in most PB books. This book is well written & organized, and has a ton of examples. Highly recommended.

About the Author

Roger Detels M.D., M.S., Professor of Epidemiology and Infectious Diseases, received his training at Harvard College, New York University, the University of California, San Francisco, and the University of Washington. In 1971, he moved to the Department of Epidemiology, School of Public Health, University of California, Los Angeles, his current affiliation. During his tenure at UCLA, he has served as Chair of Epidemiology and as Dean of the School of Public Health. Professor Detels was one of the three editors for the first and second editions of the Oxford Textbook of Public Health and senior editor for the third, fourth and forthcoming fifth editions of the Textbook, which he expanded to include public health issues in developing countries. He has published more than 350 research papers on various aspects of public health. Professor Detels continues to be very active in HIV/AIDS and public health research in both the United States and Asia.

Robert Beaglehole was Professor of Community Health at the University of Auckland, New Zealand before taking up a position as a public health adviser in the Department of Health Service Provision at WHO, Geneva, on a project directed towards strengthening the public health workforce in developing countries. Between 2004 and 2007 he was the director of the Department of Chronic Disease and Health Promotion, responsible for WHO's technical work in these areas. He developed an integrated and stepwise approach to the prevention and control of chronic diseases and led the development of the Bangkok Charter on Health Promotion in a Globalized World. He is now co-director of International Public Health Consultants, based in Auckland, New Zealand.

Mary Ann Lansang is Professor of Medicine and Clinical Epidemiology at the University of the Philippines Manila College of Medicine - Philippine General Hospital, where she has been based since 1984. Dr Lansang's work spans many aspects of disease control and public health, most notably on malaria control, vaccine-preventable diseases, tuberculosis, and other tropical and infectious diseases, including health policy and systems development. For the past 15 years, she has served and continues to serve on the boards and advisory groups of various local and international health bodies on a broad range of public health issues. She served as Executive Director of the International Clinical Epidemiology Network (INCLEN Trust) in 2000 - 2004.

Martin Gulliford is Professor of Public Health in the Department of Public Health Sciences at King's College London. He graduated in Medicine from the University of Cambridge and University College Hospital, London, and trained in public health at Guy's and St Thomas' Medical Schools London. For several years, he was based in Trinidad, organizing a programme of health services research and training. His research is in epidemiology as applied to health services and public health.
