Excellent book on how an anxious public responds to threats

At its core, this book asks how anxiety shapes political behavior. In Gadarian and Albertson's words, “We focus on three ways that citizens cope with political anxiety: (1) seek information, (2) endow trust in government, and (3) support protective public policies.” Recent work in political science suggests that anxiety encourages people to be better citizens. In contrast, Albertson and Gadarian show that anxiety often leads citizens down darker paths towards biased information-seeking (i.e., learning), a vicious cycle where citizens perceive threat so look for more threatening information (e.g., anxiety leads citizens to look for more information that portrays immigrants in a negative light, ignoring less threatening information about those same immigrants). Further, anxiety leaves citizens open to manipulation, pushing towards more protective policy solutions and the politicians that offer those policies, even if those policy solutions undercut civil liberties. These findings offer a useful corrective to the political psychology literature.

Using a wide array of experiments and survey data, the authors analyze how anxiety associated with terrorism, climate change, health, and immigration. Gadarian and Albertson deployed 7 original experiments, a noteworthy accomplishment. This book is theoretically rich and methodologically sophisticated, especially in its combination of survey data and experimental data. In addition, this academic book engages with real-world politics by looking at how citizens respond to threats in a variety of contexts. Highly recommended.

About the Author
Sophie D. Coe was an anthropologist and food historian. Her book America's First Cuisines was published in 1994 to universal acclaim.

Michael D. Coe is Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at Yale University. His books include The Maya, Mexico, Breaking the Maya Code, Angkor and the Khmer Civilization, and�Reading the Maya Glyphs. He lives in New Haven, Connecticut.

Delightful account of cacoa history

Sophie and Michael Coe have written a emminently readable history of chocolate. They emphasize the origins of cacoa in the New World, and the Spanish conquerors' response to their "discovery" of cacoa. The story fascinates, and I liked how the authors presented all the options when historical records were scarce or contradictory. The text is interspersed with clarifying illustrations, some are in color. The 19th and 20th centuries are covered in brief. The book ends with the resurgence in deluxe chocolates that use the rarer yet better tasting cacoa beans, and explains why these chocolates are so much better tasting than the supermarket candy bar. All in all, an excellent read.

Delightful Reading!

This book was an extremely readable examination of the history of chocolate, starting with the ancient MesoAmericans and ending with contemporary European and American chocolate makers. Anyone interested in the history and development of their favorite confection or beverage should read this book - it's written engagingly in the first half, and then peters out just a tad towards the end. I wished for more about the modern chocolate industry, and a little more about the current manufacturing spike in fine chocolates. But as an anthropological study revolving around the development of chocolate, I could ask for nothing more. Coe and Coe have inspired a chocolate tasting party and an academic interest in a gastrologic subject.

Story book style of delivery made this book enjoyable for the entire family. This book was packed full of information yet the manner in which it is written made it enjoyable to read as well as retain. Very informative and interesting as well as fun.

Brainy, but in a good way...

Tim Brownson's little brain book is easy to read, well-researched and packed with enough entertaining and perplexing nuggets to get those neurons fired up.

We've all asked ourselves at one point, "Why do I do the things that I do?" or "Why do I think the way I do?" This book sheds light on our cognitive biases and how to change them.

Besides the 70 brain facts, Brownson does a good job of sharing anecdotes and stories about your brain on psychology. How to Avoid Getting Ripped Off helps you `be more aware of cognitive biases, especially in situations that may cost you money if you are oblivious to what is going on.'

My favorite brain facts include:

~"...you have approximately 70,000 thoughts per day, although many will be the same ones looping round and round on your grooved cranial superhighway. And that is why we know that the quality of your thoughts is highly correlated to the quality of your life."

Brainiac Factoids

Accessible, Digestible, Interesting and Cocktail worthy factoids about the brain. As a speech/language pathologist working with people with TBI ( traumatic brain injuries) and a Life coach this info confirms we are all a little "brain injured."

Fact #6:Scientists have proven beyond any reasonable doubt using fMRI’s, that reframing negative situations literally rewires your brain by creating new neural pathways and can make you a happier, more easygoing person.
Very briefly and in case you are unaware, a reframe is where you decide to look at a negative situation in a more empowering light.
It doesn’t involve changing the actual event (that would be delusional) just adjusting your view of it. If you want to get good at reframing, simply ask yourself the following two questions (or whichever is most pertinent at the time) when things aren’t going to plan.

It's classic Tim.

I'm usually more interested in the mind, but this book makes a very important distinction between "the brain" vs. "the mind." That insight was worth the read alone.

This book is for you if:
1. You are looking for a brainy (but not intimidating brainy) read;
2. Want to meet (or get another hit of) Tim's classic style of no-nonsense, British-infused humour (he lives in the US now and he might be integrating a little too well ... you be the judge);
3. To experience (what I want to call) "mouthy compassion."

The reason he gets four stars and not five is because he left me hanging. Indeed. He seems to have recovered from being a "miserable pessimistic jerk" (his words, not mine) and transformed himself over the last decade into a rather endearing fella (in my opinion). There's a story missing in there somewhere mister.

Provides an excellent structure for Research Method courses

As a graduate student, I was introduced to the first edition of this book. Now, as a professor of Interior Architecture who teaches research methods, I find the second edition of this book invaluable. I used this book to structure the better part of my course this semester. As with the first edition, the newly revised edition covers basic research design issues before unpacking eight major research strategies common in the field of architecture and design. The overall chapter organization is illuminating for students new to design research (or any kind of research!) Further, the chapters are nicely organized internally and full of research examples to illustrate main points. The reading level is fairly high. It is especially appropriate for doctoral students, and well-suited – if not a slight stretch – for typical masters students in design fields.

The chapter “Does Design Equal Research?” is an excellent addition in the second edition. I found it especially pertinent for our program, which offers an MFA in Interior Architecture, and where students will constantly be challenged to contemplate the question in the title of this chapter. While Groat & Wang do not provide a clear answer to the question, I found the content of the chapter provided good fodder for class discussion.

An excellent read - great resource - invaluable

This edition of the book is a fantastic update from the previous version; the inclusion of the new chapters on design and research, and on the research development process, are extremely helpful. I also noticed in the new edition that there were new illustrations and diagrams that did a great job of reinforcing key concepts.

There is also an e-book version which is great for those of us that read on the go and like to have resources right at our fingertips - on our phones and readers.

A wonderful reference for students and researchers in related fields as well as architects, interior designers, landscape architects - so run, don't walk, to buy/download this version.

Luftwaffe KG200 is the best so far I have read on this formation. Some of the other books cover the operation and aircraft, while others covered the organization. This book combines all this information and is written very well so it’s easy to read and follow along to. One of the interesting aspects of this book is the unit tasked to destroy ship with heavy bombs being used to take out bridges. Easy read and enjoyable

the story seemed like something I would enjoy and it was only a ...

I have been wanting to try audiobooks for a while now, and this was my first choice. I got it free from Audible, the story seemed like something I would enjoy and it was only a little half an hour long, so why not?

I can tell why people say the narrator is very important to the enjoyment of an audiobook. Since I have no basis of comparison, I cannot tell if Ms Melody Grove is considered a good one or not, but I enjoyed it. Her voice was soothing and I could tell when the voices changed and the emotion behind the characters' lines. So yes, I think I chose a good one to start with!

I have to admit I don't find it as easy remembering things to write a proper review later on, though. I remember I thought it was interesting that Lalla, our main character, would realize there are differences between history and stories, which is to say from truth and make believe. Her mother told her many marvelous things, but not all of them were true, or so she thought. Kind of like finding out there is no Santa.

So 11 year old Lalla is our narrator, and she lives in a post-apocalyptic London, where an event called the Collapse had taken place and left people extremely poor, at the mercy of a seemingly ruthless government.

The world creation appears interesting, though I could not tell what exactly had happened. The story is faithful to what an 11 year old would say and think, but at times it does not serve too well to set context. For instance, we are told that Lalla's father goes away a lot, but not why. I could only tell that people were extremely poor and that some could live in flats, like Lalla's family. But I could not figure out if they had jobs, for example. Other things I collected from the story was that there were no children around, and that everyone's main focus was to make sure they renewed their requests to get food and that they always carried their id cards or they would be shot by the armed forces.

I especially could not figure out how computers seemed to run fairly efficiently in a world where so much seemed to have been wiped out. Even though I kept in mind that this story is a prequel to The Ship, I could have used a bit more information. But I guess that will have to wait.

As the story progresses, we find that little Lalla is tired of having no one to play with, and wants to move to Regents Park after watching a movie about it showing all kinds of wonders. You can tell there's something fishy about it, especially when Lalla's parents vehemently tell her she cannot go there, though offering no explanation. But you can tell why it would be so appealing to Lalla. And here the narrator is able to convey her emotions quite well. Lalla will do something silly as all kids must, and it will pique the reader/listener's interest to find out more about this world, which is the job of a prequel, I suppose.

I guess this story had the opposite effect on me though, since I feel that if I had read The Ship and had more context I would have perhaps appreciated it more, and it would have served to complement an already well established concept.
It's still an enjoyable listen and I recommend it.

The Time Being by Antonia Honeywell is a short story.

Here's a dystopian tale, set in the UK. It's about a world where food and other necessities are delivered into the center of town- and you can't have any unless you have a card. You can't go anyplace without this card because the world is under a type of martial law.

This card could also grants little girl, 12-years old Lalla, access to Regent's Park- a place wheel children play in playgrounds in London, music and food a plenty. But her parents tell her it's not real. The place shown on the large screens, supplied by the military, is not real. But she doesn't believe.

This broken society is nothing like the London we know of. The world is cruel and Lalla's parents want her to be satisfied with her like right now. To be satisfied with her life for the time being. To trust her parents and what they say and to never run away again...

I liked Marvin Redpost because it was funny . The reason it is funny to me because he kept trying to kiss his elbow. He almost got caught kissing his elbow. He started to act like a girl . He was wondering why girls giggle when they come out of the bathroom. He liked the way girls did thiings with their hair. He started to bite his finger like a girl in his classroom. He said that girls are lucky because they can wear anything they want like shorts, skirts and dresses and get to get boys in trouble more than boys get girls in trouble. My favorite part was when he tried to kiss his elbow and got tangled up in his sheets.

I've read the book twice. Great book. Casey tells Marvin that if you kiss your elbow, you will turn into a girl. At first, Marvin doesn't believe her, but when Marvin kisses his elbow, he thinks he really is turning into a girl! Very hilarious! If you like books where the character thinks that they are something else than what they really are, then you'll love this!

Marvin Redpost #3 is Fun!

I have read all of the Marvin Redpost books, but I liked Is He a Girl? best because it was very fun and suspenseful. It is a fun story because Marvin thinks he is a girl but he doesn't tell his friends. He believes that he is starting to like girl things but I think that there is no difference in girl and boy activities. I think Marvin sees this too. I think this is a fun book for eight or nine year olds to read and younger kids to listen to.

Sin embargo, la inmensa mayor�a de los sistemas de entrenamiento m�s difundidos en la actualidad, est�n dise�ados para funcionar si se combinan con suplementos, y si no se usan suplementos, son muy poco eficientes, incluso pueden ser contraproducentes.

Y lo mismo pasa con la alimentaci�n : la mayor�a de las dietas s�lo funcionan si se combinan con car�simos suplementos (y, adem�s, no suelen ser sostenibles en el tiempo, por cierto).

Pas� muchos a�os entrenando y aliment�ndome, sin tomar suplementos, pero siguiendo esos sistemas dise�ados para funcionar sin ellos. Los resultados eran muy pobres… as� que me puse a investigar por mi cuenta, y encontr� cosas que s� funcionaban sin tomar suplementos. Y son esas cosas que funcionan, entrenamientos y alimentaci�n, las que explico en este libro … por cierto, cosas que funcionan tanto para chicos, como para chicas, as� que el libro sirve para chicos y para chicas.

Si no quieres gastar tu dinero en suplementos, y est�s harto/a de dejarte la vida en el gimnasio y conseguir resultados muy pobres, o de hacer dietas que nunca te funcionan , te recomiendo que leas mi libro, porque creo que te puede ayudar mucho.
