All the world's a stage...
By CoffeeGurl
Parasite: an invertebrate animal preying upon the body of another animal.

And that is what Charles thinks of the Delaneys. They have inherited their parents' talents and have done nothing else with their lives. But Charles wasn't specific. Who among the three Delaney children is the parasite? Is it his wife Maria? After all, he knows her better than the rest. And he knows that she is a great actress, so great that she can develop a new personality on cue. And that is precisely her problem. Who is the real Maria? Or is he referring to Niall? Niall is a natural-born talent, a great musician. But his unresolved issues with his mother and his own brooding feelings for his stepsister has stopped him from living his own life. Then there's Celia. Sweet, spinsterish Celia, the only daughter of both Mama and Pappy Delaney (Maria is Pappy's daughter, Neill is Mama's, children borne from a previous relationship). She's the least talented one, not as pretty, and always the mediator. She's also given up on having a husband and children of her own to look after Maria and Charles's kids. She had also looked after her father after her mother died. After Charles's verbal assault, all three of them ponder his meaning, going back to the events that have brought them to where they are today. Are they happy? Could they be anything more than just the Delaneys? Is there a life beyond the entertainment world?

Daphne du Maurier dedicates this novel to "Whom the Caps fit." You soon realize that this story is very personal. Du Maurier's parents were both entertainers, and perhaps that part of her life had left some feelings that ran deep for her. She wrote various memoirs and short stories with this same theme. The Parasites, while not the author's best work, is an entertaining and poignant tale of love and loss. I like the way the author uses a rather interesting second-person narrative. All the reader knows is that one of the three Delaney children is the narrator, but which one? And do we get to find out whom it is? That is all I will reveal on the matter. Suffice it to say that the unique narrative style draws you in from the beginning. Another interesting thing is the relationship between Maria, Neill and Celia -- especially the first two. There is a Cathy and Heathcliff feel to them that is quite noticeable from the start. This is especially clear in Maria's selfishness, their unnatural clinginess toward each other since childhood (Maria used to pick on Neill when they were kids) and Neill's jealousy when Maria meets Charles. Their relationship is not as dark or as morbid as Emily Bronte's couple, but the similarities are there. And that is all the information I will supply. Don't want to go all book club discussion-type on you. You will have to read this magnificent book to know the rest. First published in 1949, The Parasites is a nice, quick read from Du Maurier, falling into a lighter cateogory, somewhere between Frenchman's Creek and The King's General, only that it's contemporary and more poignant. I recommend it.

A Unique Set up but Brillaint story from my favorite Author
By A Customer
What I find most surprising is all the dissapointment from the readers here on this work. This was one of the very first reads by Ms. DuMaurier that I read and I must say I found it immesnly worth while. I know quite a bit about her and I can tell that this was a personal work and yet, I can also say that her characterzation is flawless. I have never read a book where I did not like all of the main characters, and yet did at the same time. They are annoying and selfish and yet relateable. The story set up is odd, but I liked it. I found the ending most powerful and once again DuMaurier is skilled at an intricate frame of complex relationships. Well done. If you are a first time DuMaurier reader, wait though, get used to her for a while.

I must agree
By EA Solinas
I read Rebecca and adored it - the subtle darkness and drama, the nuances that one only picked up on the second and third readings, the intense yet always likeable characters, the delectable prose...
I hardly even glanced at "Parasites" when I bought it (thankfully, I only spent a dollar at a used bookstore) and eagerly sat down to read it. Two hours later I tossed down the book, feeling depressed and cynical about humanity in general.
This books follows the lives of three siblings, the children of equally self-absorbed actors, who are "parasites." Each one has the capacity for greatness, given their respective talents, but each wastes them on cheap, unnoticeable books, music, and stage plays.
If you're a fan of flashbacks you might like this - their lives in the 20s to 40s are covered over a massive number of pages, after a look at them in the "present" day. But this book hadn't DuMaurier's other books' sparkling prose and intense dialogue, or any of the spinetingling atmosphere that sucks you in.
It also wasn't helped by the fact that the main characters ARE parasites, living off whoever they are nearby. Their whininess and complaints augmented their selfish personas. I spent much of the book wanting to slap them. There don't really seem to be ANY likeable characters, and while I didn't expect the ending, I felt even more depressed when I read what one of the characters did.
I advise you to read "Rebecca" or "Jamaica Inn" for a first book. Had this been my first Du Maurier book, there would have been no second.

Three hearts are stronger than the sum of their scars.

True Destiny, Book 5

Slade Saeter endured centuries of torture, longing for the day he could claim Magnus Tate and Sylvia Grimm as mates. Now freedom is his, but nightmares still plague this son of Loki, and he fears his lovers will believe him too fragile to bond.

Magnus never thought he could have the woman of his dreams, not when she was broken by his own father, her heart shattered by Thor’s infidelities and their ultimate divorce. But Slade’s determination gives him a glimmer of hope.

Never one to let anything keep her down for long, Sylvia has long since healed from her ex-husband’s betrayals. But accepting her own stepson as a bonded mate? While it’s something she can wrap her body around, her heart is another story.

As three war-weary, damaged hearts slowly find balance among them, they form bonds of surprising strength. But with danger descending upon them with the fury of a Valkyrie, time is the one thing they may not have.

Warning: This title contains explicit sex, graphic language, and the only two people who know for sure if Slade really is hung like a horse. (They aren’t talking.)

Not Broken
By Evampire
Three War-weary, damaged hearts find balance and form a bond of surprising strength but with war descending on them they may not have a lot of time in this gripping paranormal romance.

Slade was tortured for centuries, Magnus thought he could never have the woman of his dreams and Sylvia’s fighting her attraction to her stepson and the reader can’t help but get caught up in this emotionally gripping romance that captures the heart as Slade’s determination gives them all a glimmer of hope. The chemistry heats up every page and the sex scenes are scorching including m/m/f but the relationship is almost overcome by the all the emotional turbulence that these three have suffered and by the present situation. These strong, captivating characters grab your attention as they strive to reach for their chance at happily after and the fast paced, smooth flowing plot holds all the reader’s attention with suspense, excitement and romance.

The war is escalating and there are so many players with their own agendas that the excitement and action could come from any direction keeping everyone on their toes, with tension building from the possibility of betrayals and new alliances being made. Intriguing events draw the readers in and guarantee that they have to know what happens next and the well written scenes and details ensure that the readers can picture each and every event as it happens.

The fascinating dynamics of this world and the way that the author brings the prophecy into play not only keeps the characters guessing but the reader’s as well which adds mysticism and spice to the story while Dana Marie Bell also manages to keep the timeline flowing smoothly and full of never-ending excitement. Once again this series had me enthralled from the very beginning of the story and I can’t wait to find out what happens next as Ragnarrok looms ever closer.

good reading
By LAS Reviewer
Not Broken is the latest episode in Dana Marie Bell’s marvelous True Destiny series.

Now that his twin has found his mate, Magnus Tate feels the pull to settle down as well. He has always known he might find a mate of either gender, but when he learns that Loki’s son, Sleipnir (aka Slade) is his, he is delighted. When Slade tells him they have a third yet to claim, he is stunned to learn that it is the one woman he has desired his whole life; his former step-mother, Sylvia. But he also knows that she has been firmly under his grandmother’s control, and against his side of the family. When Sylvia comes to Magnus and Slade and tells them she wants to escape, along with Sydney Saeter (Logan’s ex-wife) they are thrilled, but cautious. If she is sincere, they may get the woman both want in their lives. They agree to a trial period, and as the forces that side with Grimm attack, they work alongside Magnus and the rest of the family to thwart the attacks. Can three wounded souls manage to come together and heal each other? Will Sylvia be able to convince Magnus and Slade of her true intent?

I love this world, with the Norse gods living in modern times, and it is my favorite literary ’soap opera’; just when you think everything is clear, Ms. Bell throws another curveball at you, bringing characters in and scrambling the story just a bit more.

Magnus is strong and determined. He is protective of his family, and that family just keeps growing. He has wanted Sylvia since she was married to his father, Thor, but has been afraid she will never see him for himself. I like that, when the opportunity presents itself to have everything he has ever wanted, he remains cautious, hoping for the best, but expecting nothing. With Slade, he has found a sort of contentment, but when Slade tells him that Sylvia is theirs, he is optimistic that they can have it all.

Slade is Loki’s son, and was tortured almost to death by Grimm before the family freed him. He is strong in spirit and determined to have the two people he has foreseen as his mates; Magnus and Sylvia. Still recovering from his torture, he still is willing to protect what is his, and learns that his father never stopped loving him, which gives him strength to keep going. I like Slade, with his core of inner strength and his totally off the wall sense of humor. He brings laughter into Magnus’ life and to all those he touches.

Sylvia is determined to break with the family that has controlled and abused her for so long. She didn’t realize she was as brave and strong as she was, until she took the future into her own hands and asked Magnus to help her make the break. She is stunned when Slade and Magnus claim her, and is determined to prove she will not bring disaster down on the growing Tate/Saeter clan. I liked watching as she realized how Magnus felt, and as she overcame the idea of having a relationship with her former step-son.

This is a story of three wounded souls, none complete on their own, but together they are so much more than apart. There are dangers around every corner, and some surprises I didn’t see coming that were an absolute delight. New additions to the family, besides Sylvia and Sydney, folks I hope to see in the future as Ms. Bell continues to spin this web of intrigue and passion to include more of the God of the Norse mythology. I recommend this for those with the imagination to believe in the unbelievable, and get lost in the passion and heat of True Destiny.

The Reading Lesson: Teach Your Child to Read in 20 Easy Lessons, by Michael Levin MD, Charan Langton MS

The Reading Lesson is a bestselling program that teaches young children to read in 20 easy lessons. It is designed as a step-by-step course for parents who want to teach their young children to read at home. The teaching method is based on phonics and key-word recognition, and with its innovative and guided approach, the 20 step-by-step lessons provide an easy-to-follow recipe for teaching children to read. Developed by pediatrician Michael Levin, the program has also been used successfully for children with disabilities.

How do I use the Reading Lesson?

There are twenty lessons in this book. Each lesson takes about two weeks to complete (with about 15 minutes of study per day). Before starting a lesson, we suggest that you read the instructions for that lesson. Each lesson begins with an introduction and a description of how to proceed. For example, lesson two introduces the letters “m”, “d”, and “r”. At the beginning of the lesson, there is an introduction with some words of advice and thoughts on how to go through the sounds of those letters and how to read them in words.

Each lesson consists of words, exercises and short stories. When reading the words, ask the child to tell you what the word means. Before you read the story, read the title and talk a little bit about the content of the story. Approximately 300 key words form the basis of reading skills in this course. Each lesson introduces a set of key words. Your child should learn them well before you proceed to the next lesson, since these words are used in later lessons.

For many young readers (including children who are familiar with the alphabet), the letters in words seem to melt together. The instructions in Lesson One teach the child basic sound blending. The special typography and font style the book uses will help your child to identify and separate the letters she already knows. These bars, dots, and special graphics are there as guides and are used to blend the sounds into words. This process is called “sounding out”. At first, blending is difficult for most children. You will need to help the child but he will get better at it with practice.

How fast should I go through the book?

The length and the pace of the daily lessons will vary with your child's age and abilities. We suggest the following schedule: For children under five, one page per day will suffice and maintain their concentration on the lesson. For children between five and six, two to three pages per day will be sufficient. For children over six, three or more pages per day will be fine.

Children have a very short attention span. Try to keep each lesson under fifteen minutes, and spend no more than five to seven minutes per page. If your child is young, don't rush! Work at a leisurely and comfortable pace. Remember: you have plenty of time to complete the course and, if necessary, to go back and repeat the course before your child starts reading instruction in school.

How old should my child be when we start the Reading Lesson?

The book is meant for children between the ages of 3 and 8. We do not suggest that you try to teach a child under the age of three to read. Contrary to some books that suggest that you can teach infants to read, there is no proof that such a thing is possible. Children need certain developmental skills before they can read. Flashing cards with letters and words at a baby is a fun thing to do and makes us feel like good parents, but it does not work!

The Reading Lesson is a totally developmentally appropriate course that is easy to follow, and makes learning to read fun for parents and kids. The book is an easy and cheap solution to teaching your children to read at home, and has been a success with families all around the world. Give it a try – you’re sure to love it.

From the Publisher
How to do the lessons There are twenty lessons in this book. Each lesson will take about two weeks to complete. Before starting a lesson, we suggest that you read the instructions for that lesson. Take a moment to practice how to say the sounds. Each letter is paired with a picture.

You need to be consistent in how you sound out the letters. However, a word of caution is needed: no two children or even adults will say a sound in exactly the same way. Regional accents and children's relatively weak auditory and articulation skills account for the variations. In the classroom this fact is particularly obvious. It is impossible to make all children say a sound in the same way. Encourage your child to make the closest possible sound to the one suggested in the lesson but allow some leeway. Blending sounds and reading new words is what counts. Learning phonics is an important, however, an intermediate step. So do not insist on absolute accuracy in sounding out the individual letters if it is difficult for your child.

You may consider purchasing the Reading Lesson CD-ROMs. Through animation and simple games, these multimedia companions will make learning to read fun. For very young children, we suggest, the Sounds of Letters DVD, another good way to teach phonics.

For many young readers (including children who are familiar with the alphabet), the letters in words seem to melt together. The instructions in Lesson One show how to blend the sounds. The bars under each sound unit will help your child to identify and separate the letters she already knows. These bars are there as guides and are used to blend the sounds into words. This process is called sounding out. At first, blending is difficult for most children. You will need to help the child but he will get better at it with practice.

Each lesson consists of words, exercises and short stories. When reading the words, ask the child to tell you what the word means. Before you read the story, read the title and talk a little bit about the content of the story. Your child may also enjoy these stories on our animated StoryBook CD-ROM.

Approximately 300 key words form the basis of reading skills in this course. Each lesson introduces a set of key words. Your child should learn them well before you proceed to the next lesson. These words are used in later lessons. How fast should you go The length and the pace of the daily lessons will vary with the child's age and abilities. We suggest the following schedule: For children under five, one page per day For children between five and six, two to three pages per day For children over six, three or more pages per day

Children have a very short attention span. Try to keep each lesson under fifteen minutes and spend no more than five to seven minutes per page. If your child is young, don't rush. Work at a leisurely and comfortable pace. Remember: you have plenty of time to complete the course and, if necessary, to go back and repeat the course before your child starts reading instruction in school.

We do not suggest that you try to teach a child under the age of three to read. Contrary to some books that suggest that you can teach infants to read, there is no proof that such a thing is possible. Children need certain developmental skills before they can read. Flashing cards with letters and words at a baby is a fun thing to do and makes us feel like good parents, but it does not work.

If your child is reluctant to do the lessons, you may be going too fast. Slow down the pace. Always try to stop the lesson just before the child gets bored. If your child is having real trouble staying on task and learning the material of the first lessons, he may not be ready for this program. Put it aside for the time being and try again in a few months.

In every lesson, there are individual sentences as well as little stories. Most children prefer to read only the stories. They are happy to show-off, and love to be praised when they do it right. The sentences, although they contain words from the stories, present somewhat greater reading difficulty because the child cannot guess the words from the context. Stories make guessing easier. Children need to develop both of these types of reading abilities, so we advise not to skip the sentences just because the child does not want to do them.

Children learn to read faster and more easily if they learn to write letters and words at the same time. Our brain receives direct messages from the movement of our finger joints and remembers the shape of each letter. Through writing exercises, a connection between sound and letter is made. We highly recommend the Writing Lesson CD-ROM which has printable pages for daily practice to learn complementary hand writing skills.

Super easy and effective!
By Sam Speedy
[[VIDEOID:a799eea8013be6cc314de5d28d683724]] When I was looking for something to help me teach my kids to read I was overwhelmed with the number options out there. I didn't think I should have to spend a bunch of money to do it and I didn't think I would stick with a big program. I saw "The Reading Lesson" and after reading the reviews I decided to try it.
I bought my first copy 4 years ago and used it to teach my daughter to read when she was 5. At first my daugher was happy to do it but once the initial excitement wore off she did start to resist a little. So I bought some stickers and everytime she finished a page she'd get to put a sticker on it. After completing about 4 or 5 lessons it became an easy part of her routine with no more resisting. We finished maybe 2/3 of the book and one day I heard her, from another room in the house, reading a book out loud fluently and perfectly. I was surprised when I heard her because she was reading words and sounds we hadn't yet covered in our lessons.
I'm a busy working mom. I have never taught anyone to read before and this book made it very simple. Since it worked so well with my daughter I recently purchased my second copy of this book to teach my 4 year old son to read. I wasn't sure how well he would do because he is a little hyper and younger than my daughter was when I taught her. With him I started out with just one page each day. We're up to lesson 8 and he is sailing through and begs me to let him do more. He's been reading 3-4 pages each day. He's excited about reading and likes to look ahead in the book to see what new sounds he's going to learn. I can't say enough good things about this book. I only wish I had found this book to help me with my first kid.

Pros:
-Easy
-Self Paced

Cons:
-None

Comparison of "The Reading Lesson" with Englemann's "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons"
By Shanna Aten
My daughter loved this book (The Reading Lesson: Teach Your Child to Read in 20 Easy Lessons). She is currently in kidergarten and reading on a late second to early third grade level. We used this book during her preschool years.

I taught my daughter to read using "The Reading Lesson", but I used Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons to teach my first child. Both books use a similar approach. I believe that "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons" gives the teacher (parent) a stronger foundation in teaching reading, and I used some of the tools I had gained from experiencing that method when teaching my daughter. The strength of "The Reading Lesson" is it's child-friendly appearance and approach. "Teach Your Child to Read..." is fully scripted and has the parent's script and child's assignments jammed together. My son hated it after a while. "The Reading Lesson" is not quite as strong of a program, but the pages are easy and fun for a child to look at. My daughter always wanted to do "just one more" page. Once we got to lesson 12 or 13 her reading started taking off. We actually didn't finish the book because she had gained enough tools to continue learning to read on her own.

The cover is a little misleading when it says "teach your child to read in 20 easy lessons". "Lesson" here is more like a unit. Each "lesson" may be 10-15 pages long, and is not designed to be completed in a day. With young children you would probably only do one page a day, where you might do several with older/highly motivated children. You and your child determine the pacing of the lessons. With "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons" each of the 100 lessons is intended to be taught in one day. "The Reading Lesson" is more flexible, "Teaching Your Child to Read..." is more scripted and rigid. In "The Reading Lesson" one days lesson might be practicing sounds, another day practicing words, another day reading a story, some days a combination. In "Teach Your Child to Read..." each day's lesson follows a similar format which includes sound practice, blending practice, word reading, story reading, and sounds writing practice. I believe the integrated writing practice is one of the strengths of the this approach. With "The Reading Lesson" system you can order additional books that include writing practice, as well as computer software.

When you visit the website for "The Reading Lesson" you can download the first two lessons for free. If you email the company they will send you a download for the third lesson as well. We did this to "test drive" the book before buying it. The first three lessons are representative of the rest of the book, but later lessons have more stories. In fact, lesson 20 is entirely stories. Through the company's website you can also download free certificates of completion for each lesson. These were very motivating for my daughter.

In conclusion, I feel that both methods can be successfully used to teach children to read. "Teaching Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons" was stronger in it's methodology, and I'm glad I gained some experience teaching reading with that method, but it was not child friendly for my son. If I can't get my child to use it without whining and crying, it's not much use no matter how strong of a foundation it builds. "The Reading Lesson" uses a similar approach, but is much more fun for children. My daughter really looked forward to her reading lesson time, and she loved to call relatives on the phone and read stories to them. This is the book I would recommend to most parents, especially of reluctant readers.

My child can read! I highly recommend
By Jenny T.
I was overwhelmed with all the different options on curriculum on how to teach your child how to read. My daughter was 3 1/2 when I purchase this book and didn't even know that her whole entire alphabet. I was just randomly teaching her letters and using different ideas off of Pinterest. I finally got tired of not doing anything consistently and decided I needed something to tell me exactly what I should do. I want to I was about to spend over $100 on curriculum. But my friend told me she was using this book and since the prices so cheap I decided to give it a try first.

I am is ecstatic! I just follow the instructions just as it states in the book and have my daughter do a page and she can now read! And to be completely honest we are only on lesson three. She is more confident now and can read the full sentences!
So very happy that I purchased this book so I highly recommend it to anyone. On occasion my daughter gets bored from just doing a workbook page so I will use things like a sticker every time she reads a word correctly and when a she read a sentence she gets a raisin. I also made a simple pocket chart and wrote the words that she has learned on notecards and then had her put the sentences together that are in her workbook.

This book this workbook was just the structure that I needed!

Meditating Selflessly: Practical Neural Zen, by James H. Austin

This is not the usual kind of self-help book. Indeed, its major premise heeds a Zen master's advice to be less self-centered. Yes, it is "one more book of words about Zen," as the author concedes, yet this book explains meditative practices from the perspective of a " neural Zen." The latest findings in brain research inform its suggestions. In Meditating Selflessly, James Austin -- Zen practitioner, neurologist, and author of three acclaimed books on Zen and neuroscience -- guides readers toward that open awareness already awaiting them on the cushion and in the natural world.

Austin offers concrete advice -- often in a simplified question-and-answer format -- about different ways to meditate. He clarifies both the concentrative and receptive styles of meditation. Drawing widely from the exciting new field of contemplative neuroscience, Austin helps resolve an ancient paradox: why both insight wisdom and selflessness arise simultaneously during enlightened states of consciousness.

Review

This extraordinary book on meditation is a perfect jewel, shedding light for the reader on the intricate and profound craft of the practice of meditation and the neuroscience of meditation. It is a book like no other in the field and is due to become a classic. It is exceptionally useful, beautifully written, rich with anecdotes, and full of surprises.

(Roshi Joan Halifax, Founding Abbot, Upaya Zen Center)

We are often presented with stimuli but remain unaware. Zen, which means meditation, allows humans to become mindful-attentively aware of reality. In his newest book, Meditating Selflessly: Practical Neural Zen, Dr. James Austin, one of the world's outstanding neurologists, explains how the brain mediates these meditation activities and how these activities alter the brain. Using language that can be understood by all, Austin teaches the fortunate readers of this book about the biological basis of the important changes brought about by this ancient but still current process of enlightenment.

(Kenneth M. Heilman, M.D., James E. Rooks Jr. Distinguished Professor, Department of Neurology, University of Florida College of Medicine)

Here James Austin brings the fruit of his many decades engaging Buddhist meditation as a living practice, while at the same time examining what happens in the brain during meditation. This book is inviting and challenging at the same time and will prove valuable for both the novice and the long time meditator. I highly recommend it.

Bringing the light of science to shine upon what the Mystics knew all along.
By D. J. Cocks
This is a book which puts in scientific terms what all too often is only discussed in mystical or spiritual terms.

It brings the science to what mystics and sages have been saying all along, that open focussed awareness has the ability to put paid to our ego based sense of self, with its endless churning and self involvement, which ultimately given it's incessant nature, becomes extremely tiring and distressing. This book shows the empirical evidence for what has been found to work subjectively.

It illustrates in terms of modern neurological studies what Ken Wilbur expounded so profoundly in the last chapter of his first book, ie 'Always Already' at the end of 'The Spectrum of Consciousness', where he quotes Hubert Benoit and J Krishnamurti to illustrate his own understanding. This being, that what causes the cessation of self is the expectant attention of alert open awareness to the world of form (both internal and external). Reading these two books in conjunction, would, if you're at the point of being open to using it, leave you in no doubt about the way to proceed to start to get free.

Whilst this author is a research neurologist, he's also been a practitioner of Zen for 37 years, and so is also able to come at this from what has been taught all along in Zen meditation.
The book though discusses solid repeatable research, and is not a case of a person proving what they set out to find.

This is a great book for anyone with an understanding there's more than just the day to day materialism of our current societies, but who, for one reason or another, finds the trappings and justifications of the 'spiritual' world unpalatable.

This book is one of my very best discoveries on the path to freedom.

A good description of the current understanding of the neurology and the experience of meditation...
By Pryor123
This is a very good book. The author talks about his experiences during many years of Zen training, and he describes what happens to the mind and the brain as a result of meditation. I learned quite a bit about the neurology of the brain as it relates to meditation and meditation experiences. There is a lot of emphasis on understanding the difference between concentrative meditation and receptive meditation. Concentration in meditation is a "top-down" process directed by the prefrontal cortex, and receptive meditation is a "bottom-up" process directed by pathways in the lower part of the brain which provide us with an alternate way of knowing, a sense of "self-less" awareness and an increased awareness of sensory experience, the kind of "direct experience" we had as children which we reclaim through meditation. I recommend the book for its content and for its presentation of parts of meditative experience that are not usually talked about. A good book for someone familiar with Zen or mindfulness training and with enough knowledge of neurophysiology to follow the technical parts of the discussion.

Applying science to technique
By M Al-Shaer
Dr Austin has embarked on a journey to utilize neuroscience to explain:
1. What happens during meditation
2. Why meditation works
3. How to optimize meditation technique and removing the ritual while keeping correct technique

If you treat women, you'll certainly see these conditions frequently. This excellent book is heavily illustrated with color photographs as well as line drawings, and excellent outlines of diagnostic and treatment options.
