Useful and one of the few works of its kind

THE GERMANIC LANGUAGES is an entry in Routledge's Language Family Descriptions series that gives brief grammatical overviews of the main languages in this family, ancient and modern. The languages covered here are Gothic, Old Norse and Middle Scandinavian, Old and Middle Continental West Germanic, Old and Middle English, Icelandic, Faroese, Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, German, Yiddish, Pennsylvania German, Dutch, Afrikaans, Frisian, English, and finally Germanic creoles.

Like other entries in this series, the grammar, population, and lexis of each language is treated. It is nice to see so many descriptions of ancient languages and emphasis on historical linguistics. The chapter on Gothic, which attempts to use the language to reconstruct Proto-Germanic was written by Winfred Lehmann, one of the greatest comparative Indo-European linguists of the 20th century and a keen investigator of the Germanic branch. Among the entries on modern languages, the careful attention to tones in the chapters on Norwegian and Swedish make this a useful resource. The book also includes many maps to show geographic divisions of languages and their dialects.

My only real complaint about the book is that it does not provide a sample text in the language with grammatical explication at the end of each chapter like, for example, Routledge's survey of the Uralic languages. It also doesn't treat several minority languages like Luxembourgish or Swiss German, seeing them as dialects in a grander scheme.

grievously disappointing

This is perhaps my worst buy in linguistics ever: I am so disappointed by the mess this book makes of such a fascinating subject that I am at pains in giving something of a well organized review.

The only assets are the chapters describing Danish and Frisian (10 and 16 respectively): concise, clear, simple, finely organised. Even the parts about syntax are well executed and understandable.

The chapter about Old and Middle Continental West Germanic (4) neglects lexis but is otherwise fairly clear and well balanced.

The rest of the book? Varying from outright bad to a total catastrophe.

Quoting from the blurb on the fourth cover:

"...focusing on the structure of the languages as they are spoken today, whilst also giving an analysis of language history and development.

...

"... designed for comparative study and incorporates the following key elements:
- An introductory description of the social context and the development of the language
- Extensive discussions of phonology, morphology, syntax and lexis
- An outline of the main dialects

..."

The first fault lies with the editors: this book is supposed to ease comparisons between the languages, which is quite an impossible task as every author chooses the approach he/she prefers and simply comply with the general partition of the chapter prescribed.

A second fault of the editors was in not realising that the book fails both its targets:
- undergraduates will profit very little from it because of the difficult jargon used by the authors; of the sheer complexity of the concepts mentioned and never explained; of the relevance given to syntax (a notoriously woolly sub section of linguistics); of the neglect of the lexis which is possibly the most interesting sub area for a non professional.
They will need to have passed several courses in theoretical and historical linguistics to simply understand what it is all about.
- trained linguists, especially those specialised in Germanic linguistics (such as myself), will find little use in chapters far too short to add information to that they already possess, omitting crucial analyses and irritatingly simplistic in their approach.

Another crucial fault is that the book is simply not up to what is mentioned on the cover:

- lexis is ridiculously neglected: there are languages where less than one page (out of 30-40) is dedicated to it. Chapters about Swedish, Yiddish, Pennsylvania German, Afrikaans and Frisian share this less-than-one-page lexical horror. On the other hand, in the chapter about modern English, I had to read the usual silliness of English having about 500.000 vocabulary items... Well, if one takes the inventory of the -glorious- Oxford English Dictionary this might very well be the case but no linguist in his/her own mind would do that considering the number of hapaxes/archaisms/loanwords included there and probably never ever used even by cultivated speakers.

-syntax is indeed longishly discussed: no one (not the editors in the first place) had the sense of prescribing comparative tables of a set number of phenomena and word by word translations of the examples given.
I heartily invite you to analyse Icelandic, Norwegian or Frisian sentences without one and to compare modern languages without schemata: please let me know about your achievements.
As it is the various authors rant on and on about syntax rules, mixing fundamental ones to futilities, but always carefully avoiding any reference to meaning (semantics) which only can justify the majority of exeptions they mention.
It took all my training to understand what these people were talking about and I did not always succeed. I cannot begin to imagine what an undergraduate can have retained of those ridiculous messes. AND I am not ashamed to admid that I know as much about Germanic syntax as I knew before.

- (quote) "introductory description of the social context and the development ... outline of the main dialects" were present indeed, simply ridiculous in their superficiality and shortness. Any general geography text is bound to provide you with many more details about them not to mention the sheer insensitivity of the authors when describing phenomena which are crucial for the discipline.

- That the varieties of German spoken in Switzerland and Luxembourg are absent is inexcusable.

I could go on of course but I will refrain.
Just a short note about the introductory chapters about older Germanic being less than useless (only ch. 4 has some merit).

Another note is that I do not question the erudition of the authors: it is their ability to pass it on.

Very good, but difficult to read if you're not an expert

This book is very complete, as there are twelve long chapters about the corresponding most important Germanic languages spoken today, as well as other chapters about Proto-Germanic, Gothic, Old English, Old German-Dutch and Old Norse. However I have found it very difficult to read as I'm not an expert linguist. Instead of comparing each language with the others, as I'd have desired, it just enumerates and details every single peculiarity of the grammars, including phonology, morphosyntactic aspects and lexis.

About the Author
In 2009, building on 20 years of experience in investing and lending in the corporate world, Kathrin founded twig, a financial advisory firm that partners with businesses in renewable energy and clean technology. twig provides its clients assistance in 1) raising equity and debt instruments, and 2) purchase and sale of assets, projects and companies. Kathrin is also a senior partner at Tangerine Tango, a like-minded financial advisory firm with a global reach. Kathrin started her career in corporate banking with Deutsche Bank AG in Germany and Canada, and then, after immigrating to Canada, worked with TD Securities. Subsequently, she was an investment manager for F Capital, a start-up private equity fund; Kensington Capital, a buyout fund; and the Business Development Bank of Canada’s subordinate financing fund. Before founding twig, Kathrin was a senior corporate developer at Emera Inc., where she was responsible for expanding the company’s asset portfolio through acquisitions or greenfield developments, with a specific focus on renewable energy generation. During her career, Kathrin has closed bank debt and (quasi) equity transactions of over $5.5 billion, as a corporate lender, financial investor and strategic investor. Alternative energies have been her passion since 2007. Kathrin has a master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Cologne, Germany.

The 'Decision Maker's Guide...." is an extremely useful tool and enjoyable read. Kathrin Ohle distills decades of relevant experience into accessible lessons and practical advice.

This book is on the short list of 'must-reads' for current and aspiring entrepreneurs. Understanding an investor's perspective is critical for securing financing.

Many of the case studies are particularly interesting for those in, or looking to be in, the clean energy sector.

This fine book is a must-read for those who play games as well as those who seek to understand the attraction.

Why do humans play video games? Viewed from a remove, they can seem like little more than merit-less time-wasters. This can be true even for those embedded in the culture, such as British journalist Simon Parkin, whose first book, 'Death by Video Game', explores this question at length and from a variety of engrossing angles.

“In humanity’s ongoing project of survival and propagation, video games seemingly contribute little,” he notes in the introduction. Yet there are compelling depths to the virtual worlds that we can explore with keyboard, mouse, controller and smartphone screen. Indeed, as the title suggests, a spate of young gamers have been so smitten by these worlds in recent years that they have been found dead at the keyboard after extended periods of play.

“But we’re not going to linger with the corp�ses,” Parkin writes. “The more pressing question is what compelled these young people to emigrate from reality into their virtual dimensions beyond the natural limits of their wellbeing?” It’s a good question, and 'Death by Video Game' splits the answer into a dozen chapters, with �titles such as 'Belonging', 'Empathy', 'Healing' and 'Chronoslip', the last being a term coined to describe the common experience of losing track of time after becoming immersed in a game.

Parkin’s journalistic approach to the topic sees him uncovering an array of untold stories wherein humans choose to interface with games, to their benefit or detriment. Importantly, however, he does not remain an impassive observer throughout the narrative: the author occasionally interjects with personal stories, such as how he and his university friends regularly took part in marathon late-night sessions of the 1997 Nintendo 64 game GoldenEye 007, or how he came home one evening to find his wife still sitting on the floor and playing Animal Crossing in the exact same position as when he left hours earlier. “She turned her head stiffly, eyes hooded, as if awakening from a coma,” he writes. “ ‘Whoa,’ she said. ‘I am cold and hungry.’ ”

The best of these personal interjections is saved for chapter eight, Hiding Place, which tells two stories of people using games to escape troubling personal circumstances: first, a man whose wife suffers a painful complication in her pregnancy, so the pair escapes into the cold, grim world of Skyrim as a temporary coping mechanism; and an Iraqi teenager who becomes one of the world’s top Battlefield 3 players, which is ironic as it’s an American-centric war shooter title primarily aimed at Western audiences.

In the midst of these two affecting stories, Parkin offers: “I remember when, as a teenager, my parents first separated. I too found routine and direction in a video game (mine was Final Fantasy VII) when the framework of my life seemed to be collapsing.”

Passages such as this point to the remarkable strength of Parkin’s style, which is energised by empathy alongside his ability to craft an engaging human story. After all, at the heart of every video game is human endeavour and all its successes and failures; the code is dreamed up by human brains and typed by human fingers, all for the enjoyment of other humans.

The question of why many millions of us choose to engage in this behaviour is deceptively complex, and in 'Death by Video Game' Parkin skilfully analyses it in an accessible yet deeply considered manner. This fine book is a must-read for those who play games as well as those who seek to understand the attraction that this form of play holds for others — such as parents bemused by their child’s immersion in the popular world of Minecraft, perhaps.

A must-read for those with any interest in gaming!

Despite buying more than my share of books on Amazon, this is the first review I’ve written, as I just have to give the author props and recommend it highly to all. As a lifelong gamer (I'm 35, and started by messing around on the Intellivision as a tot) and voracious reader, I found this to be near perfection. Far more than the title and summary suggest, it provides the most up-to-date information and research on the multitude of ways in which games not only appeal to us but meet our most basic psychological needs, and their various applications. The writing style is excellent and easy to read, and the author is very even-handed in his approach to the controversial issues. As an added bonus for me, there was even a little bit on a game not yet released which I’m avidly anticipating, No Man’s Sky. I read a lot of the stuff out there on gaming and would rate this as the best of the bunch, a must for any gamer.

Better to read about it than watch it!

I've been watching the trainwreck that is 1995 WWF on the Network lately, and this was a great overview of what was happening behind the scenes at the time. Very easy to read and Dixon gives backstory on all the players and happenings leading up to the major events. Highly recommended!

Author Loses Credibility in Otherwise Entertaining Read....

The book was such a fun read that I was certain I was going to recommend to wrestling friends of mine. Until I got to the pages that detailed a planned feud between Undertaker and Razor Ramon that would culminate at WrestleMania XI. I was shocked that I'd never read anything about this. Not only had their been plans for a match, but, as the author explains, both wrestlers had shot vignettes to build for the match. I was too skeptical. So, after doing a minute (give or take) of research, I came across the author's source. A wrestling blogger that offers a disclaimer in the very next paragraph which states "Alright guys, this didn't really happen."

For all I know, this is the only misstep in an otherwise awesome book to read. But now I'm in a predicament. If I continue to read the book and find out something I never knew before, how do I know it's even true? The author should know his material well enough to separate fact from fiction. The reader shouldn't have to decide whether the last paragraph is as truthful as the one before. The author loses all credibility with this passage alone. Which is a shame. Because if this is the only misstep in the book, then removing it would make this book a highly entertaining read.

This was a great book. I read it over 3 nights

This was a great book. I read it over 3 nights. It's also the perfect time to purchase since the WWE Network is free for November, so you can look up some of the old PPVs and relive the nightmare that was 1995.

The book does a great job of setting up the 1995 year with all the players who either left (Hulk Hogan, Savage) or were overlooked (Bret Hart.) and the steroid scandal. It was fun to relive that period where I went from a die hard fan of the 80s to quitting watching all together after the King of the Ring 1995.

There's a lot of good stories, ribs, and general inside information that will help shed light on why certain events occurred the way they did.

I highly recommend for fans of the 90s WWF.
