Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking, by Malcolm Gladwell

In his landmark bestseller The Tipping Point, Malcolm Gladwell redefined how we understand the world around us. Now, in Blink, he revolutionizes the way we understand the world within.

Blink is a book about how we think without thinking, about choices that seem to be made in an instant-in the blink of an eye-that actually aren't as simple as they seem. Why are some people brilliant decision makers, while others are consistently inept? Why do some people follow their instincts and win, while others end up stumbling into error? How do our brains really work-in the office, in the classroom, in the kitchen, and in the bedroom? And why are the best decisions often those that are impossible to explain to others?

In Blink we meet the psychologist who has learned to predict whether a marriage will last, based on a few minutes of observing a couple; the tennis coach who knows when a player will double-fault before the racket even makes contact with the ball; the antiquities experts who recognize a fake at a glance. Here, too, are great failures of "blink": the election of Warren Harding; "New Coke"; and the shooting of Amadou Diallo by police.

Blink reveals that great decision makers aren't those who process the most information or spend the most time deliberating, but those who have perfected the art of "thin-slicing"-filtering the very few factors that matter from an overwhelming number of variables.

Amazon.com Review
Blink is about the first two seconds of looking--the decisive glance that knows in an instant. Gladwell, the best-selling author of The Tipping Point, campaigns for snap judgments and mind reading with a gift for translating research into splendid storytelling. Building his case with scenes from a marriage, heart attack triage, speed dating, choking on the golf course, selling cars, and military maneuvers, he persuades readers to think small and focus on the meaning of "thin slices" of behavior. The key is to rely on our "adaptive unconscious"--a 24/7 mental valet--that provides us with instant and sophisticated information to warn of danger, read a stranger, or react to a new idea.

Gladwell includes caveats about leaping to conclusions: marketers can manipulate our first impressions, high arousal moments make us "mind blind," focusing on the wrong cue leaves us vulnerable to "the Warren Harding Effect" (i.e., voting for a handsome but hapless president). In a provocative chapter that exposes the "dark side of blink," he illuminates the failure of rapid cognition in the tragic stakeout and murder of Amadou Diallo in the Bronx. He underlines studies about autism, facial reading and cardio uptick to urge training that enhances high-stakes decision-making. In this brilliant, cage-rattling book, one can only wish for a thicker slice of Gladwell's ideas about what Blink Camp might look like. --Barbara Mackoff

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Best-selling author Gladwell (The Tipping Point) has a dazzling ability to find commonality in disparate fields of study. As he displays again in this entertaining and illuminating look at how we make snap judgments—about people's intentions, the authenticity of a work of art, even military strategy—he can parse for general readers the intricacies of fascinating but little-known fields like professional food tasting (why does Coke taste different from Pepsi?). Gladwell's conclusion, after studying how people make instant decisions in a wide range of fields from psychology to police work, is that we can make better instant judgments by training our mind and senses to focus on the most relevant facts—and that less input (as long as it's the right input) is better than more. Perhaps the most stunning example he gives of this counterintuitive truth is the most expensive war game ever conducted by the Pentagon, in which a wily marine officer, playing "a rogue military commander" in the Persian Gulf and unencumbered by hierarchy, bureaucracy and too much technology, humiliated American forces whose chiefs were bogged down in matrixes, systems for decision making and information overload. But if one sets aside Gladwell's dazzle, some questions and apparent inconsistencies emerge. If doctors are given an algorithm, or formula, in which only four facts are needed to determine if a patient is having a heart attack, is that really educating the doctor's decision-making ability—or is it taking the decision out of the doctor's hands altogether and handing it over to the algorithm? Still, each case study is satisfying, and Gladwell imparts his own evident pleasure in delving into a wide range of fields and seeking an underlying truth.

From Bookmarks Magazine
Gladwell, the author of 2000’s The Tipping Point, reaches to create another popular intellectual phenomenon by overturning received wisdom about how we make decisions. As in his articles for The New Yorker, where he works as a staff writer, the anecdotes throughout Blink are lively and entertaining. But the sheer quantity of stories about everything from sip tasters for Coca-Cola and the Pepsi challenge to gut reactions to "fake" art overwhelms the main theme of the book; many critics feel Gladwell isn’t entirely sure what his theme is. David Brooks of The New York Times Book Review sums up the critical consensus nicely: "If you want to trust my snap judgment, buy this book: you’ll be delighted. If you want to trust my more reflective second judgment, buy it: you’ll be delighted but frustrated, troubled and left wanting more."

Don't make a snap judgement buying this book
By E. Freeman
Well, as a huge fan of Gladwell's last book, The Tipping Point, I was excited last week to finally get my hands on his new effort: Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking. This time around Gladwell's basic thesis is that often snap judgements (what he calls "thin slicing") can be more accurate than well researched, careful analysis. Gladwell uses many examples (most are interesting) to demonstrate this behavior such as determining when art is faked, sizing up car buyers, picking presidential candidates and determining the characteristics of a person by observing their living space. This has always been Gladwell's talent: taking just-under-the-radar topics and bringing them into the public's view through great journalism and storytelling.

Gladwell is also careful to examine the flipside of this phenomenon: the times when "thin slicing" misleads us or gives us the wrong results. For instance, he presents examples where the mind works based on biases that don't necessarily enter the realm of conscious thought, but are nevertheless there (age, race, height, and so on).

It's a great topic and Gladwell sets it up with some wonderful examples, but then the book begins to have problems. First, the book is a little too anecdotal. Anyone who has ever had a 200-level psych class knows that what looks like cause and effect may be accounted for by an independent variable that wasn't considered (e.g., concluding cancer rates are higher in some area of the country because of pollution, when in fact the area has higher smoking rates as well). Given this, I found that too often conclusions are made on basic handwaving, or that important aspects of studies are not mentioned. For instance, Gladwell describes a study were observers are asked to determine certain characteristics (such as truthfulness, consciensciousness, etc.) of students by observing their dorm rooms; but, never does he mention how exactly one would determine these characteristics of individuals in a scientific manner for comparison. Such omissions leave the reader a little less than convinced.

Nevertheless, even with this flaw the first third of the book supports the thesis and makes for the usual entertaining reading; but things derail from there. The examples start to seem more peripheral: a rogue commander beating the conventional forces in a war game exercise, an artist known as Kenna who apparently should have made it big but didn't (why this example is interesting I've yet to figure out), and some rehash about coke vs pepsi from one of his older articles.

By the end of the book the whole thing derails into examples that just don't seem appropriate for the topic. Sure a study of why Pepsi always does better than Coke in blind tastes tests is interesting (and you can read his article on this without buying the book on Gladwell's web site), but does a study of "sips" vs "whole-can drinking" - people prefer sweet for sips (Pepsi) - really say something about unconscious rapid cognition?

One of Gladwell's greatest strengths is in recognizing interesting things, and then bringing them into conscious awareness so we actually realize these things are happening (whether it be tipping points or rapid cognition). I think he's partly achieved that in this book, but it doesn't come together the way the Tipping Point does. One gets the idea that this topic may have been better handled in an article rather than a full blown book.

Not an idea - a series of curious New Yorker articles
By Eric Antonow
The mistake was too try and get all of these wild animals onto the same boat. The book a series of semi-socio-scientific articles on insight and intuition. It is not a cohesive theory.

The writing is enjoyable - I read the most of it in a single plane flight. Some of the insights provide building blocks for understanding how certain professionals (people who practice a subject or skill for many years) are able to develop an additional sense about things -- gamblers, art curators, policemen. They are essentially seeing something that doesn't register at the conscious-level but provides them a gut-feel about the thing. Actually, I should say that these articles are how this MIGHT be happening - it's more speculation based on the diverse theories of a number of different researchers. Individually the stories and ideas are believable. Unfortuately, Gladwell fumbles in trying take them into some unified theory that is comprehensible let alone cohesive -- at times you wonder "where is he going with this?". Without that thread the indivudal beads get lost and fade into memory as clever ideas...and not much more. Without confidence in the grand idea, the individual pieces begin to feel simply exploratory. It's a shame because there are some remarkable ideas. He's a good documenter of curiousities of research (sort of like a Ken Burns is to historical things) so the storytelling is good enough for entertainment. Another reviewer likened it the addage about Chinese food, tasty but hungry an hour later. I agree. Flawed but still some interesting ideas to puzzle over.

Blink

Blink by Malcolm Gladwell book review
Blink by Malcolm Gladwell is a book about the power of first impressions in your unconscious. Malcolm Gladwell is a Canadian journalist, author, and speaker who has been writing for the New Yorker since 1996. The book takes you through many different stories all about what goes on behind the locked doors of your unconscious. Gladwell argues that we are thin slicing all the time – when we must judge an unfamiliar situation, meet a new person, interview a potential employee – that we take a small piece of a person or situation and can immediately make amazingly correct split second decisions. I believe that Gladwell very effectively makes this argument using data and examples.

The book starts off by explaining the amazing and rather mind blowing studys of John Gottman. Gottman, a marriage counselor, turns the seemingly complicated issue of divorce into a simple equation. Looking at just 30 minutes of a couples conversation, Gottman can predict with 95% accuracy if the couple will still be together 15 years later (21). Amazing right? From there the book moves quickly through various examples of thin slicing. From marriages and dating, to judging a prospective employee in a snap decision, Gladwell covers it all.

Firstly Gladwell uses data and studies to prove his argument that we are always thin slicing and doing so effectively. Back to Gottman’s study from earlier, Gladwell uses this data to prove to us that we don't need to spend hours days or weeks getting to know a couple before being able to effectively predict whether they will stay together or not. By taking a very thin slice of the couples conversation (30 min) Gottman can effectively predict if their marriage will last. Thus, proving to us that we do not need all the time or information in the world and that we can very effectively get the gist of something with only a small piece of information.

Secondly Gladwell uses true stories/anecdotes to prove that we can, in fact, effectively make quick snap judgments. Take Gladwell’s story in the introduction for example. He tells the story of how the Getty Museum was going to buy an ancient Greek statue. They did all the normal checks to make sure that the peace with authentic and it checked out. At the last minute they had an art historian come to take a look and in an instant he decided that it was a fake. “It just didn't look right” (9). Sure enough he was right. This, Gladwell argues, is proof of your brains amazing ability to make split-second decisions without actually having all the information you might think you need.

What Gladwell is saying in all of his stories is that we all have something in our brains that helps us to use the sum of all our experiences to make effective decisions without even knowing we are doing so. Your unconscious brain does it's best to give you information you might need about the situation. This lets your conscious brain focus on other things such as the actual task at hand, instead of the background information you didn't even know that you needed. Indeed, it's hard to grasp at first but by the fourth or fifth story he tells, you'll be able to fully understand what he means.

Overall, Gladwell very effectively argues that we have the ability to make correct split second decisions without knowing all we may think we need to know. Blink has proven to be a very interesting book (as it should be – it's won many awards) and is definitely worth reading.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best of the Month, September 2010: Welcome to the 20th century as you've never seen it. At over 1,000 pages, Fall of Giants delivers all the elements that fans of Ken Follett have come to treasure: historical accuracy, richly developed characters, and a sweeping yet intimate portrait of a past world that you'll fully inhabit before the first chapter is through. The story follows five families across the globe as their fates intertwine with the extraordinary events of World War I, the political struggles within their own countries, and the rise of the feminist movement. Intriguing stories of love and loyalty abound, from a forbidden romance between a German spy and a British aristocrat to a Russian soldier and his scandal-ridden brother in love with the same woman. Action-packed with blood on the battlefield and conspiracies behind closed doors, Fall of Giants brings the nuances of each character to life and shifts easily from dirty coal mines to sparkling palaces. There is so much to love here, and the good news is the end is just the beginning: Fall of Giants is the first in a planned trilogy. --Miriam Landis

From Publishers Weekly
Using characters from different countries—Russia, Wales, England, the U.S., and Germany—and from different classes, Follett's first book in the Century trilogy provides a compelling mesh of interactions that push the story forward and allow a panoramic view of WWI's burden on five families. With over 30 hours, this audiobook would be a challenge for any narrator, but John Lee proves a solid and engaging choice. His deep voice moves through the prose smoothly and forcefully; he manipulates his tone, emphasis, and accent to develop vocal personas for the extensive cast of characters, and keeps a solid pace through the dialogue. It's a marathon performance of a mammoth book that will leave listeners eagerly anticipating the next installment. A Dutton hardcover. (Sept.)

From Booklist
After a sequence of spy thrillers, Follett burst onto the historical fiction scene in 1989 with the megahit The Pillars of the Earth, set in twelfth-century England, and nearly two decades later (having written many other novels in the meantime), he followed with a sequel, World without End. His new book inaugurates what is to be a trio of historical novels (called the Century Trilogy), and it duplicates in structure the two novels mentioned above: showcasing the lives of five families from all walks of life and involved in various ways with the issues of the day from the outbreak of WWI to the early 1920s and reflecting these issues over a broad geographical range, the families here being from Britain, the U.S., Russia, and Germany. The social range of this big, sweeping, completely enveloping novel is announced in the very first line: “On the day King George V was crowned at Westminster Abbey in London, Billy Williams went down the pit in Aberowen, Wales.” Actual historical figures populate the narrative along with fictional characters, all of whom experience in different ways war, revolution, and the fight for women’s rights. --Brad Hooper

Expert Storyteller/Enthralling Tale!
By Mary Lins
I thoroughly enjoyed Ken Follett's epics, "Pillars of the Earth" and "World Without End". Though they are hefty tomes, the pages flew. Thus I jumped at the chance to read and review Follett's latest epic, "Fall of Giants" which promises to be the first in The Century Trilogy. When it arrived from Amazon at ~1000 pages and 4 inches thick, I found myself contemplating one of the advantages of having a slim Kindel (I don't). When the thing comes out in hardback in September it could be used a murder weapon!

But we all know that size doesn't matter when you've got an expert storyteller weaving an enthralling tale. I became so engrossed that I'd look up and 100 pages would have flown by. What is it that makes Follett so consistently "readable"? In "Fall of Giants" it's because the book is so well researched about the period (early 20th century especially WWI) with information on coal mining, trade unions, women's suffrage, protocols and manners of the minor royalty, politics, government, revolution and war. The story flows from this rich period but the riveting characters are at the forefront. Even the largely unsympathetic characters, such as the Earl, are made at least understandable because Follett thoughtfully portrays their motivations. There are few totally good or evil characters here, as it should be. (Though Follett seems none too fond of Russians and priests - be they Catholic, Anglican or Orthodox!)

In past reviews I have criticized authors that I believe would benefit from more editing (e.g., Steven King, John Irving) so why don't I find Follett's book to be too long? Because there are no slow spots, no political point pushing, and no self-indulgent purple prose.

I learned a great deal about WWI reading this novel, what led up to it and how it set the stage for WWII, which I hope is the subject of the next volume. It was fascinating to read about how the media and the governments of all the countries involved, lied to their people about how bad it was.

One other thing that I believe readers should know going in: as mentioned, this is Part One of a promised trilogy but, like "Pillars" and "World" it is a stand-alone novel. The reader is not left gripping a cliff at the end. I recently very much enjoyed Connie Willis' "Blackout" which DOES end with a cliff hanger and I am glad I knew that going in; some readers didn't and felt cheated. You will not feel at all cheated at the end of "Fall of Giants". Enjoy!

Captivating epic tale!
By Denise Crawford
This is a fantastic epic, the first in a planned trilogy by the author of The Pillars of the Earth (now a miniseries) and World Without End. I simply raced through the pages, unable to put this book down even though it was a hefty nearly 1000 pages.

The story moves seamlessly and logically, starting in 1911 and ending in 1925, and has a large cast of characters -- all so beautifully developed that the reader comes to care about each one -- the good and the bad. A helpful CAST OF CHARACTERS is provided at the beginning of the book that may be copied and used as reference, but it is really not needed as the reader is introduced to each and they are so memorable that it's easy to keep them straight. The families are American, English, Scottish, French, German and Austrian, Russian, and Welsh. There are Lords and Ladies, Dukes and Duchesses, Kings, Queens, Earls, Dukes -- even the servants, miners, and other assorted people populate this work of fiction. The author has also inserted real historical figures into the story, and their interaction with Follett's characters is very well done.

Book one of the CENTURY TRILOGY is set in Europe before, during and after World War I. From a mining town in Aberowen, South Wales, to the drawing rooms of the privileged aristocracy in Russia, Britain, Germany, and to the War Room in the White House of Woodrow Wilson -- the narrative captivates as it tells the tale of the people involved in the conflict and their lives during this period of change in the world.

The story is intriguing and complex, but eminently readable. The violence and gore that were present in Follett's previous works is absent here, and the action is fast and the storytelling fantastic. I have a fondness for historical fiction, and this work does not disappoint as the author has obviously thoroughly researched the era and has rendered it beautifully.

I won't provide a detailed synopsis of this book since the product description on this page does that, but will say that it's a drama about life and love during these fateful years and I promise you that this will go down as being one of the best books you've ever read.

I cannot recommend it highly enough and can't wait for the sequel! This book, however, has a very satisfying conclusion and can stand alone as you are not left with unanswered questions at the end! Historical fiction at its best.

Solid from the first page.
By Robert Busko
When Ken Follett's Fall of Giants arrived I was stunned at the size of the book. Nearly a thousand pages were before me. Then I wondered why I was surprised. We're talking Ken Follett here. Regardless of size, Follett's books are imminently readable and Fall of Giants is no different. Perhaps the most amazing fact is that Fall of Giants is simply the first installment of a promised Century trilogy. Amazing, but not surprising. I can't wait.

The story revolves around five European families from 1911 to 1925. This period of time encompasses the First World War. The period of late the Victorian Age was a time when society was rigid with "manners". The upper classes new their place and weren't shy about letting everyone else know their place as well. If the code of conduct was firmly set for the upper classes and royalty, so was it set for the lower classes as well! If you were a member of the "working" class you knew who your "betters" were and behaved accordingly. Life was hard and took its toll on the masses. Follett does a masterful job at describing the world as it existed at that time and he spends a good deal of time examining the class struggle which went on in much of Europe during this time.

His characters are so numerous that he provides an index of them at the book. In most cases he provides us with clear descriptions of those who inhabit his fictional world. I can only assume that character development will continue in the two additional books we are promised. I thought this was a strong point in Pillars of the Earth.

The Fall of Giants is a sweeping novel not because of the time period it covers, only 14 years, but because of the story he is telling and because of the era in which it happens.

Of all the authors I have read over the years it is James A. Michener that I remember most fondly. His stories are so complete that after finishing one you really felt as though you had accomplished something. You also learned because of reading them. The Source really gives one the sense of the complexities in the Holy Land. Texas, Poland, and Centennial, and others, not only told a story that entertained, but also taught the reader something. Ken Follett is, in many ways, the same. You will be much richer after reading Fall of Giants.

I don't even think the length of the book is a negative. I suspect that a competent editor could have found a way to pare down the size. But some stories just take a while to tell. Cutting is always an option, but only so much "fat" can be cut before you're into the meat, and this book is meaty.

Try reading Fall of Giants, I think you'll be glad. If you don't want to buy it, check it out from your library. I don't think you'll be sorry for the effort.

I highly recommend.

Peace always.

Artificial Nutrition and Hydration and the Permanently Unconscious Patient: The Catholic DebateFrom Brand: Georgetown University Press

During the past few decades, high-profile cases like that of Terry Schiavo have fueled the public debate over forgoing or withdrawing artificial nutrition and hydration from patients in a persistent vegetative state (PVS). These cases, whether involving adults or young children, have forced many to begin thinking in a measured and careful way about the moral legitimacy of allowing patients to die. Can families forgo or withdraw artificial hydration and nutrition from their loved ones when no hope of recovery seems possible?

Many Catholics know that Catholic moral theology has formulated a well-developed and well-reasoned position on this and other end-of-life issues, one that distinguishes between "ordinary" and "extraordinary" treatment. But recent events have caused uncertainty and confusion and even acrimony among the faithful. In his 2004 allocution, Pope John Paul II proposed that artificial nutrition and hydration is a form of basic care, thus suggesting that the provision of such care to patients neurologically incapable of feeding themselves should be considered a moral obligation. The pope's address, which seemed to have offered a new development to decades of Catholic health care ethics, sparked a contentious debate among the faithful over how best to treat permanently unconscious patients within the tenets of Catholic morality.

In this comprehensive and balanced volume, Ronald Hamel and James Walter present twenty-one essays and articles, contributed by physicians, clergy, theologians, and ethicists, to reflect the spectrum of perspectives on the issues that define the Catholic debate. Organized into six parts, each with its own introduction, the essays offer clinical information on PVS and feeding tubes; discussions on the Catholic moral tradition and how it might be changing; ecclesiastical and pastoral statements on forgoing or withdrawing nutrition and hydration; theological and ethical analyses on the issue; commentary on Pope John Paul II's 2004 allocution; and the theological commentary, court decisions, and public policy resulting from the Clarence Herbert and Claire Conroy legal cases.

A valuable resource for students and scholars, this teachable volume invites theological dialogue and ethical discussion on one of the most contested issues in the church today.

"Hamel and Walter have done a significant service by providing the reader with the medical, legal, theological, and magisterial materials necessary to formulate a position on the significance of the prudential teaching offered in John Paul II's 2004 allocution and the CDF response to the American bishops on the obligation to use artificial nutrition and hydration to prolong life."―Theological Studies

It contains a substantial collection of essay and official teaching documents that seek to present and develop Roman Catholic teaching on the care of patients who are permanently unconscious ... Review

"Rather than argue for a simplistic and one sided solution to the problem at hand, Hamel and Walter offer an exemplary moral study guided by an appropriately theological methodology. They provide the relevant Church texts which frame the issue and present a legitimate range of theologians―gratefully, often new voices to the conversation―who responsibly engage and critically appropriate the tradition."―Thomas Kopfensteiner, Catholic Health Initiatives

Good information, but difficult to read and formula heavy
By Stephana West
I like the way this book was organized with call outs and important terms defined at the end of each chapter. However, I found it very difficult to get through all the formulas and examples in many chapters. The real research examples and the chapter summaries were helpful. Some chapters seemed like a users guide for data analysis software that I didn't have and have no need to purchase. I think this book would be good for people interested in learning data analysis of marketing research, but it was more than I needed or wanted to know about what happens to data when it goes to the analysis team.

Love it
By Las Orelle
Awesome book. Great introduction to actual market research (rather than marketing for businesses, etc). My prof said it's a great book to keep on your bookshelf, and I think I agree.

This is the 7th version of the book, so not the most recent (8th), but I found it close enough except for the Real Life Research case studies at the end. It includes a cd for A statistics program, which my class doesn't need, but might be cool to look at sometime.

From the Author
My book, Basics of Web Design: HTML5 & CSS3, takes an innovative approach to prepare students to design web pages that work today in addition to being ready to take advantage of new HTML5 coding techniques of the future. To meet this challenging goal, the book introduces both XHTML syntax and HTML5 syntax, presents coding web pages in HTML5 with backwards-compatible techniques that work in current browsers, and also provides practice with HTML5's new features that will only work in the latest versions of browsers.

Today's learners are busy multitaskers. The book is organized in two-page sections that quickly introduce the reader to new topics, provide examples, and offer hands-on exercises. This approach will get your students up-and-running quickly. The textbook companion website at webdevbasics.net has a page for each chapter with hyperlinks for websites listed in the book, information on emerging trends, additional examples, corrections, and review games. Instructor materials are available from the publisher's website.

Excellent
By Carl S.
This book is excellent. I purchased the Kindle version of this book (although it appears to only be currently available in print format) and used it for a Web Development course at a local college last semester. Our instructor provided the student files to us so the lack of a CD was not an issue for me. The book explains a small topic and then gives an example. You start out with developing a basic page for a fictitious "Pacific Trails Resort" web site and expand on it throughout the book. You learn about headings, lists, links, etc. first and then you learn how to style the page with CSS. Then you learn tables, forms, audio, video, etc. as well as how to style those with CSS. In the end, you wind up with a web site that is better than many small business web sites currently on the internet. The book is very current and teaches modern coding techniques. However, the content is not exclusive to HTML5 or CSS3 meaning that you learn the "new" way but also the fallback to HTML4/XHTML. Although I used this book in a classroom setting, you could easily self-learn this material using only this book.

There is also a free iPhone app available to help you with chapter quizzes and exams. If you read the material, do the hands-on, and practice test with the iPhone quiz engine then you should have no problem getting an A in your class. (I did!)

However, the book is still great if it is not being used as a textbook. I'll use it as a reference in the future.

Highly Recommended!

Not bad
By Michelle Steenland-Gilbert
This is a pretty okay book. Each section in compressed onto only two pages which makes the book incredibly organized and easy to skim for a specific topic. However, because it is so compressed as a beginner sometimes I don't understand everything because there aren't enough details or examples.

Also, because this book was written at a time where XHTML and HTML5 are both rather popular, the how-to portions are a bit split between the format of both.

There are a lot of exercises which provide great practice, and the case studies at the back of each chapter are a great review. The book also provides numerous links to other sites where you can get more information.

Overall it is a great book but it has its rough spots.

Not a good book for a beginner.
By Trying to Survive NJ
Very difficult to follow. I purchased it for a class I eventually dropped. I'm not 18. I really wanted to learn. The book wasn't clear, and seemed to skip steps. I did the book exercises, but then the homework assignments differed. The instructor didn't help, as she refused to answer questions. I'm also fairly literate. I use Microsoft Access, and do programming in it. Just a very frustrating experience. I'm not sure how much was a bad instructor and how much was a book that I couldn't follow.

Reformation And Society In Sixteenth-Century Europe, by A. G. Dickens

The deep impact of 16th century religion on European society can still be felt in our own time. In this profound but lively study the movements inspired by Luther, Zwingli and Calvin are described with the mastery which Professor Dickens' previous works in the field--especially The English Reformation--have led us to expect. Other important influences, such as the Radicals, receive equally stimulating treatment, and the numerous illustrations from contemporary sources will help to create a vivid picture of the Reformation as a whole, against its social, political and intellectual background.

A Good Survey of Protestantism and Society.
By J.L. Populist
"Reformation and Society" begins as a study of the leaders and the reformation movements in countries like Germany, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Scotland, and Britain to name a few.The Hussites, Thomas Cromwell, Stephen Gardiner, and William Tyndale are some of the notable sceptics of the papacy. Of course A.G. Dickens devotes more time to covering the better known trio of Luther, Zwingli, and Calvin.

The book examines some of the causes of the Reformation and the importance of universities and the printing press in fueling the reformation.

A look at the societies of Luther's Germany and other countries involved in varying degrees to the movement.

The influence that Thomas Wyttenbach had on Zwingli was interesting as was the failed attempt by Philip of Hesse to reconcile Luther and Zwingli. While the leaders of the Reformation had a common opponent in the Catholic church, their views were anything but universal.

The author descibed the different beliefs of various sects of Anabaptism and their suffering at the hands of both Catholics and Protestants.

"Reformation and Society" was a useful read on the Reformation and it's effects on a number of countries and societies. The squabbles over different viewpoints such as the view of communion in relation to Christ's physical body. Various views on spiritualism were also examined.
Overall an educational book well worth reading.

A Classic Account
By JaneyVee
A classic, secular recounting of events in 16th Century Europe. I had an old (45 years!) paperback version that fell apart when I re-read it recently. Was very pleased to find a hardcover, used edition to replace it in my library.
