Bryn is determined to keep the creature safe. But it’s not easy to secretly raise a cryptid baby, especially when it starts to flame. For what Bryn really has is a baby dragon, a dracling. The poachers will be after her for sure. But what does it mean that Bryn can ken with it? Is she meant to protect it? How far will Bryn go to save what might be the last of its kind?

Gr 7-10–This book offers a wondrous mix of dystopic science fiction and magical fantasy. Bryn is grieving the loss of both of her parents. Her mother disappeared on a scientific mission and her father went to look for her. She and her younger sister are living with their aunt and coping as best they can. Then, one of the boxes sent by her mother before she disappeared turns out to have a dragon egg in it. Bryn isn't sure what it is at first, just that she doesn't want scientists to dissect it and destroy it. She ends up having to run away to where it all began in Alaska, where her mother disappeared. Can she outrun poachers, scientists, and other nefarious characters and find a safe place for the baby dragon? Fletcher has done an outstanding job of creating a believable place and space for this story to unfold. The plot flows smoothly and quickly with a lot of action. Bryn is multidimensional and realistically developed as are many of the minor characters. Room is left at the end for a sequel, but readers aren't left hanging. All in all, this is an engrossing and imaginative read that will appeal particularly to fans of Robin McKinley or Anne McCaffrey.Saleena L. An Action-Packed Read

I loved the first three books in The Dragon Chronicles, so I was prepared to sit back, relax, and savor this new entry. That didn't happen. There was no sitting back or relaxing here. I was leaning forward, heart thudding, eyes glued to the pages throughout.

Ancient, Strange, and Lovely takes place in the near future. Bryn knows that her family is different. They have a secret. They can "ken" with birds, touching their minds, bonding, and finding companionship with a particular bird. At the beginning of the story Bryn's scientist mother has gone missing in the wilds of Alaska. Her father has taken up the search and soon he is missing also.

When Bryn's bird Stella starts acting strangely and leads her to the basement where a mysteriously large egg is hatching, Bryn is not prepared to care for the unusual lizard which emerges. It isn't long before she is on the run from Oregon to Alaska in an attempt to find someone who can help to care for this critter, which she suspects is really a dragon.

I sat up reading late into the night to find out what happens to Bryn and "the critter." Readers of the the first three volumes will have extra knowledge of the distant past events which led up to this book. But, it is a stand-alone and won't need the other volumes to make sense. (Although you are going to want to go back and read them, once you reach the end of Ancient, Strange, and Lovely!)

Not Just Another Dragon Book

There are tons of dragon books out there, but only a handful are done well. The vivid world, engrossing plot, and clever details of "Ancient, Strange, and Lovely" definitely make it one of the best.

Susan Fletcher creates a futuristic version of earth that is well developed and detailed. She did a good job of putting us in the world, and giving us a sense of the main character's daily life. But she takes her detail and vividness further as she describes the baby dragon. The reader can envision its fuzzy baby-skin, its kneading claws, its body language - by the end of the book the reader is as attached to it as the main character!

The plot as well is enticing and dramatic - over and over in the book Susan Fletcher puts problems in her character's way that keep the reader asking, "What is she going to do NOW?" There is suspense around every corner, and seemingly unsolvable conflicts that somehow manage to be worked out in the end. The touch of magic ties the whole book together, making it a fun futuristic adventure that will satisfy anyone's thirst for fantasy!

This book is an exciting ride, and I would recommend it to anyone!

A believable world

Susan Fletcher did an excellent job creating a world set in the near future. Most dragon fantasies are set in either a completely fictional world, or in medieval times, so it was refreshing to read one in which the characters talk on cell phones and watch the news on TV. Yet the environment has been compromised, and Fletcher puts us into that world with details about the culture and how teens would respond to what the "older generation" did to them. Their dress, their "body art," their music - complete with outrageous band names and hit music lyrics - all add a depth and richness to the setting.

The main character is a true teen, impulsive and emotional. The description of the dragon baby almost makes you believe the author had raised one herself. The plot moves along well, and makes the book a fun read.

True life changer

The author's nutrition recommendation is awesome. It changed my life dramatically in a very short amount of time. I immediately felt that my intelligence and concentration levels started to increase a lot from the very first day that I followed his method. Moreover, I lost all of my excessive weight in 2 months and I feel great both mentally and physically right now.

He introduces a concept called as "The truth analysis" is life saver in the real life situations. I can interpret and analyze what people actually say during a communication much more successful comparing to me two months ago by the truth analysis method and my enhanced mental and physical abilities.

I Doubt You'll Be Disappointed

Great book by a sincere and knowledgeable author! I don't think you'll be disappointed. I got this to help improve my years of training in detecting deception (I am a police officer) and also I am a very amateur mentalist. In my 50s, it also didn't hurt to get it to help keep my mind sharp throughout the remaining years of my life. Some might not appreciate that the author is a Christian and makes it plain in his book but he does not try to preach to you or make one a convert. I'm a Christian so it was an added bonus to me. Lots to read and learn.

An absolute must for the plywood boatbuilder

I suspect this is the best how to book ever written on any subject. Clearly an overstatement, but it is the only way I can express my appreciation for this text. It contains loads of tips and tricks complemented with detail drawings, photo sequences and explanations for why to do things as suggested. I am currently building a Hal Jackson design so you don't need a Glen-L design to profit from his experience.

The book is set in a font size larger than average - a godsend to older individuals - making it easy to read.

I would add that this book is extremely well written and might be worth reading even if you're not building a boat - say, for example, if you are writing a how to book or a hobbyist interested in some excellent carpentry techniques.

About the Author
Robert K. Greenleaf, author of the classic Servant-Leadership, was director of management research at AT&T. He held a joint appointment as a visiting lecturer at the MIT Sloan School of Management and at the Harvard Business School. He died in 1990.

Editor Larry C. Spears has been CEO of The Greenleaf Center for Servant-Leadership since 1990. He is the editor and co-editor of several books, including Insights on Leadership and Seeker and Servant.

Introductory Summary:

The editor of this book is Larry C. Spears who at the time of this writing is the CEO of the Greenleaf Center for Servant-Leadership since 1990. The foundation for this book is grounded in the person of Robert K. Greenleaf who is the father of Servant Leadership Theory. Back in 1970, he wrote a small essay called “The Servant As Leader”, which introduced the term “servant-leadership.” That and other writings have influenced an entire generation of management experts and institutional leaders. Bob Greenleaf (1904-1990) spent his first career in management research, development and education at AT&T. After retirement, he began a second career teaching and consulting at institutions ranging from Harvard Business School to the Ford Foundation to scores of churches and not-for-profit institutions. During the tumultuous 1960s, Greenleaf tried to understand why so many young people were in rebellion against America’s institutions, especially universities. He concluded that the fault lay with the institutions: they weren’t doing a good job of serving; therefore, they were doing a poor job of leading.

In 1970, Greenleaf wrote “The Servant as Leader”, a powerful little essay that continues to gain influence today. In it, Greenleaf described some of the characteristics and activities of servant-leaders, providing examples which show that individual efforts, inspired by vision and a servant ethic, can make a substantial difference in the quality of society. Greenleaf said true leaders are chosen by their followers. He discussed the skills necessary to be a servant-leader; the importance of awareness, foresight and listening; and the contrasts between coercive, manipulative, and persuasive power.

This book is a collection of eight essays by Robert Greenleaf, most of which were originally published as separate pamphlets by The Greenleaf Center.[1] The editor makes it clear that as an aid to the reader, the eight essays in this volume are as follows:

“Servant: Retrospect and Prospect”
Greenleaf presents the need in this reflection of how fresh vision is needed that

liberates people with in a variety of institutions and organizations from rigid mind-sets.

“Education and Maturity”
Personal identity and personal significance is developed over the journey of a life time as one grows in understanding of maturity.

“The Leadership Crisis”
The source of the crisis in Greenfield’s reflection is the definition and limitation of three types of power. Vision is the necessary sail that gives guidance to the effective use of power in the life of an institution or organization.

“Have you a Dream Deferred”
This reflection focuses on the understanding of leadership to place the responsibility for personal growth of people within an institution and organization back onto the people they lead.

“The Servant as Religious Leader”
From the perspective of the organization it is not simply tasks that must get done but in the midst of tasks recognizing the phenomenon of “spirit” we must get people done by leaders holding their own against the forces of destruction and indifference.

“Seminary as Servant”
Greenleaf presents how seminaries can have the courage to present a vision by which they focus on serving society.

“My Debt to E.B. White”
The essay presents how E.B. White’s writings impacted Greenleaf’s thinking over fifty-five years. Two of White’s gifts: “seeing things whole” and “the gift of language to express what he saw – were foundational to his power as a writer.

“Old Age: The Ultimate Test of the Spirit”
In this essay Greenleaf begins to unpack the wisdom that he has developed over a lifetime of experience and reflection. This is a wonderful chapter for anyone who is preparing to transition into midlife.

Points of Discovery and Reflection

This reader has discovered after reading numerous articles and essays written by Greenleaf one must take time to reflect on three questions that will allow the reader to process Greenleaf’s transformative leadership theory. These questions are: How does one understand the need for people to be integrated in their approach to life and work? In essence productivity is the outcome of one’s way of being.[2] In a New York Times article Greenleaf states, “Servant leadership deals with the reality of power in everyday life – its legitimacy, the ethical restraints upon it and the beneficial results that can be attained through the appropriate use of power.”[3] It is refreshing that Greenleaf does not approach the concept of power as being inherently evil which has been made common by some cultural definitions in the flow of the American mindset. For Greenleaf, it is the proper stewardship of power by both leaders and the people that they lead that create a context for the development of healthy maturity and wholeness in their lives that makes a positive impact in society. The second question one must reflect upon relates to “how one views their own sense of personal identity?” If transformation is to occur in the lives that one leads it must be happening in the life of the leader. All ten of the foundational characteristics of servant-leadership theory are grounded on the bedrock of this core truth. Ridged mind-sets in organizations find cannot be hurdled by a leader who is not aware of their own capacity for a ridged mind-set. Thus, this leader will not have the courage to present a vision that is persuades people consider a different path to an issue. The third question that one must reflect upon is, “How does one view other people?” In each one of these essays you as a reader will be constantly challenged to be more committed to the growth and success of those you serve as a leader rather than your own success.

Thoughts for the Journey

One of the criticisms that leadership scholars have levied at servant-leadership theory is that there is not enough empirical research that support the productivity of an organization implementing this approach to leadership. In the past ten years that has changed and what is occurring is that there is some cross-over with this theory along with family systems theory that is making some deep impact into the productivity in industry as well as in the context of globalization. In reading this book I would recommend that you journal your thoughts around the three questions that were presented in the previous section of this summary. This is a great read and this reader highly recommends that you take the time to glean from Robert K. Greenleaf in order to equip you with a different vision for yourself and others on your journey.

This quick read packed a lot into it and held my attention from the start.

Cheryl is a great heroine. I enjoyed watching her blossom into the beautiful and sexy woman that she becomes. Matthew is a wonderful man. He is willing to see what others do not. Matthew sees the beauty that Cheryl hides. Watching Matthew bring out the sexy side of Cheryl was an entertaining read.

I enjoyed reading about the bond that grows between Cheryl and Matthew. They make a great couple playing off of each other very nicely. Even though they begin their relationship as a no-strings affair it looks as if their love may build a stronger bond between them. Not many people can say that they ever find anything close to what Cheryl and Matthew share. No matter what she changes Matthew not only tells Cheryl that she is sexy he shows her that he finds her attractive no matter what, not only endearing him to Cheryl, but to the reader as well.

Celia Jade has the readers enjoying themselves from the very first page. With good characters and a well written storyline this book should be on your to be read list.

OK, the plot was good, it was written very well but that's IT from me! I expected more than a Harlequin romance but I read this instead-- and was majorly disappointed. I DID like the interaction between the main characters and how their relationship progresses, but it lacked detail IMO.
