A dark, graphic, often violent look at a world where super powers are rare but real, told from the point of view of a man who was given powers that he didn't really want, and who now simply wants to be left alone. I admit, I may have been a bit on the desperate side of my book search when I ran across this title. I'm over urban fantasies with kick-ass, pouty heroines. I wanted something a bit more rugged and uncompromising. A hero that maybe wouldn't be too torn up over giving someone a drubbing they actually deserved.
I saw the description, and I thought, "Really? Everyone's a hero? What's the point then?" But there is a point. Trust me when I say that in a world of ego-driven heroism, the embittered mercenary a-hole is definitely a character unique enough to make the story worth the read.
I like the way the author presents the story. It's not a perfect novel, no. There are some editing issues that could use some spice (I knocked off a star for that, sorry). I like that we can see these books, though, and I will forgive a LOT of grammatical proof for a great story. So I did. I read this, and I liked it, and I'm looking forward to the next one with a little more enthusiasm than is probably healthy for a well-adjusted woman in the modern world. :P

Fun, Nasty, Anti-Heroic Romp

Imagine Captain America. Then, give him a general upgrade, and add in some truly hefty kinetic powers (if it moves, he owns it). Finally, instead of a wimpy patriot, have the backstory that of a minimally moral mercenary with anger issues, a "big game hunter" who specializes in taking down paranormals. At the end, you get someone remarkably similar to Subject 12's protagonist, former codename Hammer. A rare super-serum success story, he's on the run from his psychotic, immortal former-employer Kinsey; needless to say, his resignation letter was delivered rather physically. So where does the most powerful super-mercenary run to for protection? Obviously, the not-so-morally-pure heroes guild, and antics caused by a combination of his ridiculously short temper and Kinsey's attempts at vengeance and conquest ensue.
The book was generally well written, and I liked the way that the first person narrative worked to try and make the protagonist's harsher actions (Aztec style heart-ripping, say) seem more reasonable. The matter-of-factness of the narrative also effectively conveyed his BAMF nature. As you may guess, the violence was suitably graphic and the frequent fights suitably vicious. I do have a few complaints. First, despite being perhaps ridiculously overpowered, Hammer (we don't really know what else to call him) tends to rely pretty heavily on his hand to hand skills. This guy was a highly trained kill-team member, without powers, before eventually gaining them. It doesn't really fit with his backstory, history, or practical attitude to fail to use all of his abilities when threatened. Second, for all his training and distaste for those that err morally, he flies off the handle and gets pretty nasty all too easily. Apart from those inconsistencies though, I was a fan.
Overall, an impressive, fun story that should appeal to anyone wanting an Anti-heroic superhero read. Think "The Punisher," but with superpowers instead of machineguns, and a book rather than comic.

a gritty superhero novel that's a great read

I really enjoyed this book. It' a gritty, rather violent take on the superhero genre. The story is narrated by a man who was an unexpected success in a private military super soldier experiment. He only wants to be left alone but they'll do anything to get him back and get his powers under their control.
It's a bit of a strange read in the sense that you don't even get the main characters name till half way during the book but I found this a compelling read. It's part action movie with super powers, part violent odyssey to self redemption. For all that it's source is the comic book genre this feels rather more real than a lot of superhero books I've read. I'm not sure I'd describe the main character as "likeable" but I'll quickly pick up book two in the series when its published and I'm a bit surprised this didn't get snapped up as a paperback novel as I have a feel it would especially appeal to a lot of male readers.
